I was about 20 when I sat down (55 years ago now) and read each individual Gospel in sequence. It used to sort of annoy me that only bits and pieces of the Bible were read at Mass, even after I understood that the tri-annual cycle meant that most of the Bible could be covered in that time. In any case, I treated each Gospel as a separate story, and from a separate point of view. I loved the Sermon on the Mount. I was moved by the crowd chasing Jesus to the precipice and then He turned and walked away THROUGH THE CROWD. I wanted that kind of courage. I yearned for a similar tenderness he had for women and children. The sufferings on the Cross moved me to tears...and anger at the cruelty. When I finished, my beloved father asked me how it (and I) was. I said, "I wish I had known Him." And my father, chastened by war, hardened by hard work and sorrow, a Roman Catholic turned agnostic by life, looked at me with those wonderful blue eyes and said, quietly and simply, "You can." I miss you so much, Daddy. RIP.

Thank you, Father Casey, for doing this series of videos on the gospels. A shallow reading of them, as I have been guilty of doing, makes them appear redundant. A more incisive appraisal, such as the one you are doing here, shows how understanding their unique contributions richly adds to our faith. For your efforts in bringing that across, am grateful.

I just did this a few weeks ago and it was amazing. Highly recommend. If you think it’s too much, read as you listen to an audio bible. It’s faster, and you’ll retain more info. God bless!

    Bless you, Father!
you should consider putting all 5 of these videos in a set--this one being the intro, with the other 4 in order
I just watched them all together, but not in any particular order, with this one coming up last on my feed
you shared profound insights I had never considered
I particularly loved your take on Luke
as a Left-wing Catholic, I have told my priests I only have 2 objections to Revolutionary Theology-
1- it doesn't go far enough
    2- it isn't Catechism

I think I'll read through all four Gospels back to back, myself, and really read them, as though for the first time. Video re-enactments of the Gospels (such as a movie called "The Gospel of Mark") are a big help for me, too. I'd like to know our Savior more!

I've listened to a number of Bible scholars who have also suggested reading each Gospel from start to end to get the unique perspective of each author. I think there is a richness to taking in each of these individual narratives, and not just mashing the 4 Gospels into one. Each believer can have a unique perspective on our Savior, and the four Gospels represent 4 perspectives.

Did you notice how the doctrine of Christ evolved and was embellished as time passed? Major new understanding by the time we get to John.

👍I've wanted to start reading the bible from beginning to end but never got down to it.
However, my biblical knowledge though more than most, is NOT complete & need to seriously knuckle down and get down to reading the bible as I have the time to do so.
Perhaps this weekend, i shall get cracking. Thanks Fr.Casey for the push in that direction. 😉

Jesus says in Mathew 22:37-40 love God with your mind heart and soul and love thy neighbour this sums up the commandments
Hold compassion, understanding, acceptance, mercy and forgiveness as jesus did,
Do unto others how you want others to do unto you (treat others how you want to be treated)
Who is without sin casts the first stone (aimed at the Pharisees who tried convicting the adulterer and trap jesus)
It really does not take much to show compassion, acceptance, understanding, mercy and forgiveness once you let go of your core beliefs but remain faithful to jesus

I agree with the message of this video. Maybe it would be a good thing to encourage in the church more reading of the Bible(humbly, not as the protestants do). I would add one very important thing that I learned from reading the hole text. You get a feel for the personalities of the people, but the one person that is most shocking and amazing is Jesus Him self, dear i say more shocking then the Father Him self. He is so loving, patient and caring but also so Godly authoritative, harsh but carefully guiding that He doesn't even feel merely human...He feel above, more then human, He feels ultrahuman...very difficult to even wrap my head around the representation, a representation present in texts written by different people! It really makes me wish to have been witnessing Him speaking even for few moments...it's not mentioned for nothing that His speaking really had an impact on the crowds...

What do we make of contradictory statements regarding Jesus's birth in the different gospels? The accounts are quite different and on numerous points in disagreement.

What I realized is all of them contradict themselves and each other. Matthew and Mark in particular feature Jesus actively dissociating himself with divinity. Mark has the famous "I am not good, only God is good" interaction with the rich man. Matthew concludes with Jesus using deliberately distancing language to ascribe himself as a teacher teaching of God when he creates the ministry of the disciples. Both only feature a fully human deeply religious person who received a miracle in being resurrected, something not unique to Jesus in the Bible. Luke is silent on divinity of Jesus; he commands to worship God, and later inconclusively reappears before being taken to Heaven rather than resuming life on Earth.
And then there's John's "I AM A GOD! WORSHIP ME!" nonsense that completely contradicts and jumbles not just events but also philosophy from all the previous gospels and even the entire rest of the Bible before it. It goes best in the trash.
So the conclusion is we have no real authentic Jesus scripture, and whatever would be authentic, Jesus definitely wasn't God and didn't ever say he was God or wanted to be deified.

Jesus never said "I am not good", but "Why do you say I'm good?", which are two completely different things. He never denied to be God

Given that the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) are often seen as coming from a common source, with Mark being the oldest of the three and Luke the latest-written (and with other no longer extant texts also serving as sources), it's hardly surprising that they have similar language shared among them. Nor is it surprising that John, which does not share a textual source with the others, should have a very different perspective. To consign it to the rubbish bin simply because it differs in theme and tone to the others is to ignore the provenance of the four Gospels.

In John 14.9 Jesus said *"... if you've seen Me, you've seen The Father, He and I are One...."*
What do understand by those words ?

You might want to reread Matthew. He doesn't waste any time proclaiming Jesus' Divinity. Matthew 1:20 says the child in Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit and Matthew 1:23 says this child conceived by a virgin shall be called "God with us". I guess you must think Jesus, along with so many other men having virgins for mothers, was unaware He was Divine and just happened to stumble on the practice of performing miracles like so many other mere men do. By the way, great job misquoting Mark's Gospel.

Really, Father! You astonish me! You waste your "valuable" time by reading.... FICTION? If you have that much time to waste, get a good job serving at a soup kitchen.
