Fr. Casey - I am friends with a retired bishop who is a member of a religious order. He was asked twice to become a bishop, and both times said no. The third time, he was ordered as a matter of obedience by the Holy Father to accept. So, yes, you can say no, but you might end up a bishop anyways.
Thank you, Father Casey, for your candor regarding your thoughts on romantic love, marriage, and how such thoughts have led you, from time to time, to fantasize about leaving the priesthood. It is nice for laypersons to see that priests struggle with so many of the same temptations that we do. Granted, on an intellectual level, we know that you are human, but many laypeople still see those in religious orders to be of a different breed - as if you have some level of moral strength that is beyond us laypeople and self-restraint that is preternatural. Conveying that those in religious life share the same failings and tribulations as the laity makes you not only more relatable, but also more credible.
...in an earlier video he spoke of a specific woman with whom he'd interacted & "fallen in love." And then...did nothing. She moved away, unaware of this. He did mention that she'd gotten engaged, so his ears were - at least briefly - alert to news. Then....nothing happened. As he says in this video - he's committed to letting the fleeting thoughts of couple-hood be just that. Fleeting. 💔
It sounds to me as the same thing as being married and not following through with infatuations. When we get married we don’t stop being attracted to other people. I wouldn’t call it falling in love though but more like platonic infatuations. I can see a priest going through the same thing and choosing vocation just like a married person would choose their marriage over their infatuation.
I just love how passionate father Tito is, explaining all the DnD stuff (I don't really get it either; but super funny he made you into a half elf *THIEF* ?! haha!)

I truly enjoy your videos and honestly they sometimes fan the ember of my faith which I constantly find fading. I am not Catholic, and grew up protestant. I married a Catholic woman, but still find my faith faltering a bit as it is very difficult to be a Christian who actually follows Christ's teachings in our society right now. But your videos fan the flame to keep my faith alight. And I truly appreciate you!
Hi Father! Love the answers to these questions! Potential future question: do you have any tips for people who're overwhelmed by all the awful current events on how to process/live with/cope with The Feelings? Personally, I find the feeling of overwhelmed inadequacy sometimes haunting me in the face of everything we see on the news, etc.
You don't have to keep watching the news. There's only so much you can affect and things that are outside of our scope of influence, we really don't need to worry about. Also I've felt such immediate peace when in front of the Blessed Sacrament, I've given all my worries and intrusive thoughts to God. Just immediate peace.
Not religious myself but when life becomes too much I chant 'Hail Mumbo. Full of Jumbo' ten times in a row, sometimes alone, sometimes with others and concentrate real hard on something so unspecific that I call it a mystery.
I live in the Northern part of NSW, Australia and our Bishops is a Carmelite, an still wears his brown habit. He once said he does not enjoy the chao of tne world and misses his monastery.
Well actually I am autistic and from my experience as long as someone that wishes to be in the ministry does not have too much difficulty in day-to-day activities. It actually could open a door up for a priest to be autistic. At least with other neurodivergent people. On my own life is hard to connect with neurotypicals but the thing is at least for some people like myself it'd be easier to listen to someone who's neurodivergent than someone who's neurotypical because I've been hurt by neurotypical people who don't understand the neurodivergent experience.
They always threatened to make my priest a bishop. I am a Greek Orthodox person and my priest unfortunately lost his wife when she was only 42 so he’s been a single father and such but every time they go to let someone they put him on the short list and he hates it, he does not want to be a bishop.
Welcome back, Father. My question is weird and oddly specific. Why the age cap? I'm a disabled veteran who is currently married. My wish is that if I out live her, have my own independent medical care (via the VA), and my own stipend that I can share, can I still join at a later age.
I think the reasoning is that religious life has its own rithms and rules. You have to learn some habits until they become second nature. And it is difficult to do that after a certain age Though I find this unfortunate too and think the same way as you
I think the same Way, Single retired and wanting to serve in some way. I was wondering if I could contribute by being a driver or an assistant to a priest. In the Midwest they are stretched thin and serving multiple parishes. Is that a possibility.
I have spoken to non-Catholics who believe DnD is an evil, non-Christian type game. I have tried to explain that it is not an anti-Christian game. After all, DnD is not like a Ouja board!

Hi, checked the link (out of curiosity mainly, as a female I can't really be a friar). Noticed there are no Fransican orders in England, Scotland or Wales. Why is this?
Think you skipped part of a question, from what I understand Priest can leave and get married. Growing up we had a priest at my church that met a woman and left the order to get married.
If I'm not mistaken, R.C. priests are allowed to marry but cannot perform certain tasks like hearing confessions & other. Many *married* Anglican priests have left their denominations and joined R.Catholism, they remained married yet were accepted as R.C. priests .
Priests can, under serious circumstances, request to be dismissed from the clerical state and thus be released from the promises of celibacy and obedience that they made when they were ordained. If the request is granted, then they can get married; they remain priests, as the effects of ordination are permanent, but they can no longer exercise their ministry.
@ no, RC Priest can't marry, but as you mentioned there are cases where married Priest from other Churches/Orders "transfer" and continue to be married. A married man can also become a Deacon but a unmarried Deacon can't get married once he is a Deacon. A married man may become a Priest if he is widowed.
This comes with great penalties, limiting what one can do in the church. A former priest can never teach or take an active role in parish life. To say they can leave and get married is technically true, but it is not a real option. It is only tolerated.

Hi, checked the link (out of curiosity mainly, as a female I can't really be a friar). Noticed there are no Fransican orders in England, Scotland or Wales. Why is this?
It's because they're mainly protestant cultures. Monastic orders were dissolved over the course of the protestant reformation in the 16th century
Faith just faded away there, sadly. They are a custody of Ireland now.
Being a monk is based. I wish that I was a monk.

Can a permanent diocesan Deacon join an order and become a Deacon in that order?
Yes. As long as they’re not married, which is rarely the case because they get married before becoming a deacon.
