You're doing great. It's healing to see someone take on a no buy where it's not so black and white. I was doing a no buy challenge and had to buy shoe inserts while traveling because I left mine at home. Could I have suffered without them? Yeah...but it's not the point of the no buy.

I think you did a great job, you plan to reuse, it's all preloved and could also be used for workout/ lounge wear 😊 I love Halloween too, I do buy my son a costume (usually from tk maxx) but I always make sure it will do him for all his fancy dress throughout the year, he's been Woody from Toy Story, a dragon and a spaceman so far! ❤
I use my regular wardrobe items for my costumes and then have accessories that put it over the top. But that is because I like buying pirate or Morticia Adams themed clothing that is toned down enough to work in regular life. Lol isn't it hilarious that they called velvet sweat pants COUTURE? Lol. It's so nostalgic 😂
Re: costumes. Carnival is a thing here in Germany, at least where I live and I also work with kids so I dress up at work for carnival (in February). I also mostly use regular clothing and accessorise them. For example I wore a completely white long dress with black combat boots, a toy gun and made myself two space buns = princess Leia. Or denim dungarees over a red top, made myself an "M" on a baseball cap and painted a mustache in my face = Super Mario. 😂
Me and my husband aren't really big on dressing up and never buy ready-made costumes because we always find them extremely ill-fitting and bad quality, essentially a one-time wear. So I thrift for items online, but I save all the costumes in a box in the basement and then we can go through it on the rare occasion we need a costume. Roaring 20's, 90's-themed party, Star-Trek style alien babe, a princess, stereotypical professional sex worker? I have them all from previous years. I store them separately so that they don't clutter my everyday wardrobe. The only exception is my son, who is still growing rapidly so I buy full costumes for him from time to time, but we try to exchange them between our friends with kids similar age.

The packages! Yes! I, too, shopped in a planned way this week. I just learned yesterday how to repair knitwear, and I moved a button over on my suede skirt. I had in my head all this angst built up about doing the repairs and it only took a few minutes. But I did realize you can't really make anything look NEW again, which is sad.
Yes it's like a mini-list of tasks, emails with constant updates, and then deleting emails of what's already arrived, etc...it really did feel good to not have to deal with that anymore, which is kind of bizarre to say since obviously it was all brought on my things I used to choose to do!
for halloween I always wear this huge black velvet cloak, carry a cinnamon broom, and say I'm a witch. A friend's mom made me the cloak like 15 years ago and I wear it every year lol. I tend to set up a bonfire in my yard and just stand out there in costume and hand out candy.

Ive bought Halloween themed dresses instead of organizing a costume from my other clothes or buying a cheap Spirit costume. Ironically Halloween is my favorite holiday but I am too lazy to come up with a new costume each year. I have a lot of Halloween themed everyday clothes that I wear throughout October.
While I’m not technically on a no buy myself (low buy = certain planned purchases, nothing impulsive, particularly handbags!), I see nothing wrong with planned purchases that will ultimately contribute to enjoyment! I’m a huge Halloween fan, so I get it. My planned purchases this past month were all Halloween / seasonal themed. You were smart and shopped for everything second hand, too, so smart from a financial sense. Don’t sweat it - just enjoy! Life is meant to be enjoyed! ❤
It’s really not hypocritical to buy the thing that you planned to buy as an exception to the no-buy. Surely you won’t get any hate for that. I was born in 67, so I know the fashions of the 70s and 80s very well… everything after that counts as recent :) Half of my wardrobe dates back to the 90s and noughties, though I never bought Juicy Couture or the Paris Hilton look. To us Europeans, Americans are weirdly intense about hallowe’en and Christmas. I’ve dressed up on occasion - either as Morticia Addams or a witch, as I had long dark hair and the costuming was minimal - just my own clothes really. I enjoy doing the makeup though. I loathe trick or treat, but it is catching on over here now, sadly. The mafia in miniature. I understand why people do it but I really hate it. We used to do traditional things like bobbing for apples, but not much.
There'll sometimes be the occasional commenter who pops in seeming to have not seen anything else on my channel - while the majority of my comment section is positive and thoughtful there have been a few jabs in there 😅 (although since it's fairly clear that they aren't aware what's going on I don't get upset by these!) Americans ARE weirdly intense about holidays! It wasn't nearly so overwhelming (especially in terms of all the "stuff") when I lived in New Zealand. I'm not a huge fan of trick-or-treating either but I'm guessing now that I live in a house, I'll have to deal with i there...we'll see
The dopamine hit is still a thing to me, but otherwise I don't like the act of shopping itself. Also, I tend to keep obsessing afterwards if I made the right decisions or if there might something better out there. So annoying. If I need (or want) something new nowadays I hope that I find it relatively quickly. I don't want to spend the mental energy to search and hunt down the perfect thing.
I felt the same about wanting to find things relatively quickly, I now feel the burden of the time and energy a lot more than I used to - I think the "no buy" has changed this for me a lot. The dopamine aspect is still there for me too, and actually in some ways the "act of shopping" is still attractive, but ONLY if I already know I'm not going to buy anything or don't need anything.
I don't think that you should be too harsh on yourself. You bought those pieces second hand, which is already a win, and you said that you count on re using this costume for future years to come. Personally I never want to buy a new costume each year because it's such a waist just for one day. I just re use whatever I already have like accessories with just simple pieces of clothes that I wear daily. And I'll just put on some fun makeup or fake blood to give a touch of that "Halloween-iness". Buying things every year just for one day a year is a massive ick of mine personally. Even if maybe I don't feel very original or in theme for Halloween parties, I just cannot in good conscience waste money and contribute to more consumption for one day. I think that I would like to maybe learn how to sew some simple pieces or accessories myself, that could be fun and at least it would be better quality then those cheap costumes + it's always original and nice when you see someone with something they crafted themselves. So all in all don't feel bad about yourself!
I gave up on saying no buy, low buy is so much forgiving on myself as you have to buy to eat. Just make sure to pay myself first, so money to my savings and investments always! Then try to be mindful with everything else :)

Halloween was huge at our house growing up. We hand made decorations, we made creative costumes… sometimes required buying a few accessories or oddities, face paint etc. We went house to house all night or until we couldn’t walk anymore due to exhaustion, and tallied up our candy at home. That was always fun! Our whole family loved Halloween, my dad planned out candy to give out weeks in advance looking for special items-and consuming a good bit himself. That was one thing he never complained about the price -Halloween candy and the holiday. ❤ My costumes were: cat, witch, Cookie Monster, princess (totally DIY with existing normal dress and a wire coat hangar poof for the skirt), Holly hobby, and repeats of those in variations.

Holiday shopping is always a little tough. Mostly because it is for something that is only used for a very limited time (it goes against the grain for long term/regular use). I was in a T.J. Maxx Home Goods store the other day and all the Halloween decor held no appeal at all. I like to be very simple and even functional for a costume. Some years are easier than others, but it is possible to be kind of clever with this.
Absolutely! I was getting groceries the other day and saw a TON of "halloween-specific" clothing, not costumes but tshirts and sweaters etc. with halloween themed sayings and pictures. And all I could think about was how few wears those items will get, and how many resources will be under-utilized right there.
I broke my no buy this week for my birthday and I feel a lot of buyers remorse for most of the items I got, even though it was a pre-planned thing. We're growing so just keep pushing forward.
Yes - even with these "pre-planned" purchases the act of shopping just doesn't feel the same after starting this journey, which is interesting in itself!

I am looking for a decent quality black witches hat, found a cool wig second hand and can make do with the rest. With the packaging, helps to have a large box in the garage (e.g. toilet paper box) to save all sorts of packaging materials, they can be used to send your own sold items or saved for a small business in your community, especially online antique places. I have a person who comes and gets my saved packaging every now and then.
I do save packaging for reselling, so most will be repurposed, that's true. Interesting to hear that there are other outlets for it as well, I'll have to look into that!
Love the costume! The Dooney & Burke purse brings back memories. Wanted one SO bad in 7th grade 😆 I really think it would look cute with “regular” outfits too as a pop of color.
I'm totally with you in the ways we celebrate and have traditionally costumed ourselves. I even go so far as to have my kid give me all her candy as a form of currency to then get something she wants more, like ice cream (which I can procure a "healthier" version of), or a special outing she relishes. I'm that unsettled by large quantities of low-quality candy😅.
