I'm new to mage knight, just finished watching all your videos for first reconnaissance and solo conquest. I also watched your War of the ring videos. The UA-cam community is very lucky to have people like you take the time and effort for explaining such games like Mage Knight. Immense thanks for doing this. I, and the other thousands who've watched these video, are extremely grateful. Thank you.
Levels of boardgame geekdom: 1. Playing with friends 2. Watching recordings of multiplayer games (Will Wheaton et al) 3. Playing solo 4. Watching a recording of complete solo game and enjoying Great vids, keep them coming!
WizKids should put you on the payroll. I just ordered a copy of this game based almost entirely on your videos. I tried the game on Vassal, and that combined with your videos made it a must buy. Nice work!
I’m so grateful for your dedication to the hobby. Finally picked up a copy of Mage Knight a couple weeks ago and your archive of Playlists have made learning the finer points much easier. One of which is not being afraid to take a couple wounds.
After just finishing the walkthrough playlist and this Solo Conquest playlist and actually playing the walkthrough and beating it, I wanted to take the time to thank you for taking the effort to make these amazing tutorial videos. You are a great teacher and the videos made the actual play very fun because most of the rules were already in my head. So I could actually focus on having fun. And I feel very confident in playing my own first Solo Conquest. So thank you very much! Even in 2021 the videos are very valuable!
Just started my first solo conquest and your guide has been an great help. Even 9 years on from the original posting it’s still a benchmark for a well explained / edited and entertaining play guide for what is a complex game. Thanks
Thank to your videos and replies, Ive been able to properly play the game now. Ive played about 6-8 good games now, PROPERLY for once LOL and I have to admit that I dont think I will ever be able to beat cities levels 5 and 8 but if I adjust the levels down then I can have a 50/50 experience where if I win then I barely squeaked out the win and if I lost then it was by needing just a turn or 2 more. When I reveal the first city I set its level to my heroes level minus any empty command tokens I have. If im level 4 with 2 tokens but only 1 unit then the city would be level 3. If I was level 4 with 2 tokens and 2 units then it would be level 4. I typically am facing 2 cities of levels 3 to 5 (sometimes 6). And if feels VERY balanced to me. Thanks again Ricky Royal. As far as city levels 5 and 8... I can beat level 5 city and get to the level 8 city and get 1 turn of assault in but its always at the very end of round 6. And even if I had more rounds (I play to see if I could have won) I still woudnt be able to pull it off. But kind of close, it just dont seem like Ill be able to though.
My job means that I am away for months and months on end but when I return I love having a few games of Mage Knight. These videos are perfect to refresh the concept and to get me in the mood! I think I've commented on a few of these now but once again... I thank you!
@Ricky Royal. Hi. I know this is an old video but I can't thank you enough for your work. I watch LOADS of game walkthroughs and yours are best by far. I bought Mage Knight on the strength of your videos. A serious injury left me with certain problems that make it harder for me to digest complex info and Mage Knight rules certainly are complex. Every minute I've spent watching your work has been a joy and so worth it. Thanks again from a fan.
Truly epic ! I just watched this entire series as well, and I must say that it was the most enjoyable walkthrough that I have watched in my life. You have a natural talent for this sort of thing, and it's wonderful to listen to and observe. Well done !!
Hi, the fame you get is not the cost, it is the unit LEVEL - i.e. 3 not 9 (or 8). Does this make sense? Thanks for watching! Glad to hear you enjoyed the series. Rick.
So, thanks to your video series I was able to have my first game of Mage Knight. I went straight for Solo Conquest since I'd seen your walkthrough videos. The final night dawned with one city taken at great cost, my hero and myself weary from the challenge. Our deck was mercifully free of wounds, but only from allocating them to my units. With the final city having 4 enemies and myself and my forces wounded, I make for a nearby monastery, using my Influence to heal. Surely I will be unable to take the final city, taking the weaker one almost killed me. So I decide to go out fighting, seeing how many I can take with me before I run out of time from the Dummy Player... and then, through having exactly the right cards and allocating damage, I managed to kill the entire garrison in one combat, on turn 2 of the final night. It was an amazing feeling, and it's thanks to you. I hope you keep making helpful video series like this for a long time to come :)
I can't thank you enough for teaching this game in a clear and concise manner. Your editing and pacing are perfect. Now I have to check out your vids with the expansion and Krang! Subscribed.
I watched your first reconnaissance videos then played that walkthrough. That gave me the confidence to have a go at solo conquest but wanted to watch your video series on this first and just finished watching all the videos in one session. Absolutely enthralling and so well presented and has given me the confidence to move on and take on the solo conquest a few times. Brilliant work. Many thanks for you efforts.
I've started to get REALLY interested in boardgames lately and Mage Knight looks simply amazing... watching this series has inspired me to put this one at the top of the buy list, thanks Rick and keep up the good work!
hi Ricky! I am a brazilian fan, and i have watched your series of War of The Ring, Legend of Drizzt, Hoplomachus and ALL videos of Mage Knight. You conviced me to buy both War of The Ring and Legend of Drizzt, and I can't wait to get my hands on Mage Knight. Thank you for teaching us how to properly play these games, your videos are very instructive! Looking forward to watch another session of Mage Knight on your channel :)
Had these videos to hand as I played my first solo conquest the other day. Only managed to conquer the first city. Preparing for another attempt. Your videos have been a HUGE help in deepening my understanding if the game and to possible strategies. I was resisting taking wounds, but I realise not that these are part and parcel of a city conquest.
Thank you, the time and effort you put into these videos has increased your "fame" to beyond any mortals attempt at questing. these videos make prepping new players ( friends) easier and more successful, Which for me is essential if you want to have friends who play board games.
Siege, yes. Fire and Ice only if they are "Ranged Fire" or "Ranged Ice" - on their own, without the "Ranged" keyword then they are melee. Glad you enjoyed the series, thank you for your comment, it's much appreciated ! Bye, Rick
Great stuff biglar155. I'm not sure it's that many in the scheme of things, but I hope I've helped those who have picked it up. Thanks for your comment, it's very much appreciated. Thanks, Rick
Thank you for your videos of Mage Knight and Thunderstone Advance. They have been incredible helpful and even more exciting, than watching a good movie. It is the way you explain and show everything, so even a beginner, like I am, is able to understand everything just fine. I'd enjoy seeing even more of these in the future!
This is the second time I went through your whole series 2 walk through. Seeing your play I i understood the tactics we need to use. Greta job. Thank you.
You have definitely hooked me on this game! I will buy it and play with my buddies (perhaps after a few solo efforts) at the first opportunity. I really enjoyed following along with your story. I cheered for each monster defeated, and winced every time you took wounds... seriously :-)
This last episode answered my questions regarding using a hero in conjunction with units. It took a while, and now I am confident I can finally play Mage Knight without the frustration factor re not mastering the rules setting in Thanks again ever so much.
I FINALLY, after 7-8 playthroughs beat solo conquest today! My final score was 145. Well, maybe 147 because I didn't count an artifact that I sacrificed for full effect and wasn't sure if it counts towards final score. I also used Arythea as well for this run. Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to this amazing game, and taking the time to explain it so well to us noobies. Keep up the great work dude!
I just finished watching this playthrough, after having seen your original tutorial walkthrough and the Lost Legion playthrough, and your videos have exponentially increased my desire to play this game!! Thank you!
Bought the game a couple days ago and had a friend over to check it out. Needless to say we were both a little taken back by the two rule books in the box. Now after watching season 1+ 2 I feel as if I could explain enough of the game mechanics to teach others. Thank you for your video!
Thanks for the series! I'm on my first solo conquest and can't even come close to assaulting the 1st city haha. I'd better plan better next game. Good times!
Ricky Royal - Just to let you know, these videos/series are still helping people such as myself that are new to this great game! Just bought Ultimate edition!! (Yay). Thanks for making them!!
This series was very impressive Rick. Your editing and camera skills showed everything very clearly. I didn't watch the walkthrough, but no doubt I will pass this video on to friends that I want to teach the game. Small thing you could do that might help is to assign damage to your units. Especially when you are doing so to a spent unit with no further use. Less wounds to your hand. Last assault you could have avoided wounds to hand and drawn more cards to try and max your score better :)
Just finished the first series, now working on this series. You are absolutely great at presenting this content, keep it up. I have never played Mage Knight before, but now I'm eager to get it :)
That's a really impressive game you played. I was even more impressed once you tallied the score. Not only did you win, which is a feat alone, but you did so with style. Even more kudos to the guy who somehow managed to score 198. Thank you for these videos. They've helped me a lot in learning this game. I've watched another person's video of Arkham Horror, but after watching this series I plan to go through and watch your AH videos also to refresh my memory and clarify rules. Thanks again
Well done! I always play it safe and try to take no wounds so was quite shocked at the beating you took yet you had a really good score despite this - great recruiting and In need combo with your wounds!
I just started playing Mage Knight because of you. I finished walkthrough the first time. Then I was excited to start solo conquest. Boy I failed 3 times already. You make it look so easy!! 😂
Well played, my friend! This series was a phenomenal watch. You are a godsend! I learned a ton and you helped clarify numerous things that I was unsure of. Magnificent! Keep up the great work. A PvP video would be greatly appreciated.. at least for combat explanation. Much thanks!
Hello again! I got this game and these videos have been unvaluable help. I think I enjoy more watching you play in the videos than playing myself! :) I think I will go for the expansion tutorials now!!
Haha ! Thanks for the great comment BigChillRiver. Glad it's helping. It was a pleasure putting it together. Such a great way to chill out. Thanks for watching, Rick
Thanks for this, I finally bought Mage Knight a few days ago after hearing good things about it and hadn't realised how massive it was. Now I've watch your first reconnaissance and solo conquest I have a much better understanding. Time for a game
Hi vectordream121. Yes ! There are a few different scenarios to play solitaire. And an expansion just released too, to give more options. The game packs a ton of replayability. And a good challenge too. Board games do offer a totally different experience to video games. I hope you enjoy !
Man, all this videos + the walkthrough were freaking awesome and helpful! Thanks to you I managed to win my 1st attempt with the solo conquest and scored 132 fame at the end :D ahhh, the puzzles, the puzzles!! Keep the good work. Grats.
Thanks for the quick reply too :D Just one more thing: When you level up, you pick an Advanced Action Card (AAC) and a skill; the AAC has to be picked at random or it must be always the one at the bottom from the AAC offer?
Me too and finally decided to go ahead and order the game and the expansion while I was watching and reading the rulebook on the web while the videos buffer (so disregard that comment about 4 videos back about the adv. action cards costing 6 in the monastery as it says so in the rules). Was referred by Rodney of WIP as I was looking at this or Wrath of Ashardalon for a pure solo/co-op play. Excellent videos.
Great videos! I've watched series 1 and 2 shortly after buying Mage Knight. My girlfriend and I used it to get a better idea of some rules we weren't 100% sure of since the rulebook isn't always the most clear on particular points.
Just finished this with a friend in cooperative conquest :) It's a challenging game but we beat it on round 6/6. Awesome videos, keep up the good work!
You're welcome !! Glad you enjoyed it. I'll tally up another vote for PvP. It's on the to-do list. I figure it should be coming as the next series, or soon after ! (Doing Memoir '44 at the moment, as something a bit different). Thanks, Rick.
I am just wondering -- why didn't you at any point assign damage (wound cards) to your units throughout the game? I believe you can assign wounds to "tired/used" units as well, that would have made sense when you fought the monsters in the 2nd city.
A good question; it's only play-style, liking to keep my units unwounded. As I've played more I am less precious about my units and they take many more wounds now :)
thanks for your compliments ! I did consider this.. I've not done the math, but I know wounded units give you less fame at the end... this is why I avoided it. But I'm guessing - I'd have to check - wounds have a bigger -ve cost than the +ve score from unwounded units, is that right ?
Mage Knight drew me as soon is I saw the box but since it's quite expensive I didn't know should I buy it. I watched all 4 series and now I'm going to get the game and the expansion. I learned to play the game with the videos and now I can start playing with my friends as soon as I open it. I hope you'll do a co-op or a competitive mission too. I'd like to see that. Thank you for all the effort you put into making these videos so novices to Mage Knight around the world could learn how to play :)
That's great to hear . There is so much to this game, if I have given enough to get people up and running more quickly then I'm happy :) And yes, re wounds, I was the same when I first played..tried not to get them.. now I treat them as a nice way to get things done ! Have fun! Rick
Really enjoyed this play through so excited to crack out my brand spanking new Mage Knight Ultimate Edition bought Renegade a while back got so many games not had chance to play yet will do soon though :)
Thank you for the play through; it gave me a better understanding of the rules. The intro rule book is good but the main rule book is a bit of a mess. It can be hard to find specific rules. A very fun and thematic game though.
That was coool..your game makes my head hurt! I have tried solo so many times and have only managed to defeat one city before the third night ends. luv your work mate..keep it up :)
Does the damge from the "poison" ability, i.e. wounds that go to your discard pile, count when determining if you get knocked out? I would believe they don't?
I would like to thank you for all your videos. You've got a French fan here ^^ You make me bought this game that I thought is awesome, I can't wait to try it with my friends as i only play it solo for now. See you'r vid is still watched 6 y after you plubished it. That prove the quality of your work. Thanks you again and continue doing your stuff ! Cheers from France :)
Great series as usual, but it can be pretty devastating for my wallet. I want to buy each game you played on your channel. Really good presentation and editing.
These videos are tremendously helpful. Thanks for performing this service for the gaming community. Wizkids should put you on the payroll. I never would have purchased this game hadn't I not watched your walk through.
Awesome! I just watched it and it does answer all my questions about it! WizKids should package the game with links to your play through videos. I'm really glad I found your channel!
That's great to hear Heathgod. That's a great part of this game..the theme is strong and the gameplay really tells a story. Playing feels like an epic adventure. I hope you enjoy when you buy ! Rick.

One more new player checking in. Played my first game last night (and lost, haha), all made possible thanks to your amazing videos!

great videos. you're very good at explaining everything that's going on in this complicated game
+srelma thank you :)
Good work! Hope your love of the game grows!

Congrats. Amazingly well filmed video. Love your stuff tks for all your time and energy.
I bought this game after watching your solo game here. They really give great insight on the game mechanics and how to play this game. Good job mate!
An epic journey! It was both entertaining to watch and instructive. Thanks for doing these!
Nice job, and you've done such a fantastic job with both this series and the walkthrough series. Thanks again for posting these.

Hi Rick,
I just bought this game in Thailand because of your videos.
Thanks for this great quality of work and epic run.
Cheers from Thailand
thank you krup. Hope you have fun with the game! R.
Hey thanks ! That's a lot of viewing! Thanks for your support, Rick.
Wow, what a journey!
I'm about to start my 4th game so thank you so so so much for these play-throughs!!!
That was an epic play through! I recently got into Mage Knight and it helped me a lot, thank you!
You are great. Both Mage Knight and War of the Ring videos are awesome. Thanks!
Thank you !
Thanks for the videos. Very good introduction to the game.
Thanks for this, I finally bought Mage Knight a few days ago after hearing good things about it and hadn't realised how massive it was. Now I've watch your first reconnaissance and solo conquest I have a much better understanding. Time for a game
good luck!
Thanks, just finished my first game with a grand score of 26 😂 Obviously got a lot to learn
Hi vectordream121. Yes ! There are a few different scenarios to play solitaire. And an expansion just released too, to give more options. The game packs a ton of replayability. And a good challenge too. Board games do offer a totally different experience to video games. I hope you enjoy !

good work ;) Hope you continue to enjoy the game!
Thanks for the quick reply too :D Just one more thing: When you level up, you pick an Advanced Action Card (AAC) and a skill; the AAC has to be picked at random or it must be always the one at the bottom from the AAC offer?
you can pick whichever one you wish.
iTz Me Dr4k3 ! it only needs to be the bottom AAC when you learn a skill from another player
Haha! Nice one dregen77. Thank you for watching. Hope you enjoy the expansion :) This is a great solo game..one of the best.
You sold me on it. My copy is getting in today, which is perfect since I just finished learning from both your series.
You're one city stompin' badass Rick! Well done.
Insane playthrough
Awesome demo of a great game, well done!
Great use of the units, Rick! Congratulations on the win.
Thanks ! Hope you enjoy it.. I wasn't disappointed.. now to find more time to play...!
Excellent choice ;) Hope you get to play and enjoy it soon ! Thanks for saying hi, R.R.
Great job on those videos. Already watched series 1 and 2, going to 3. Looks like a RPG scenario for me.
I would believe they don't?
woosnext you are right... any wounds ADDED to your HAND only. Good call !
well, was considering the purchase of this one, this solo play just made me to add it to my wishlist, awesome play
Great finish, great series.
Thanks for the awesome videos. I somehow managed to score 198 on my first victory (which was my 2nd game). Very cool game.
Very helpful demo. Thumb up ;)
thank you !
Cheers from France :)
merci bien ! Thank you for watching and saying hi. Hope you continue to enjoy Mage Knight, Ricky
Thanx a lot, it was an entertaining watch :-D Now I feel I can suck it out more fun from my first game.
Thanks frederick. It's a great game solo. I've tried 2-play but it just didn't work for me. Hope you enjoy the game!
Great series as usual, but it can be pretty devastating for my wallet. I want to buy each game you played on your channel.
Really good presentation and editing.
embir82 :) Thank you !
These videos are tremendously helpful. Thanks for performing this service for the gaming community. Wizkids should put you on the payroll. I never would have purchased this game hadn't I not watched your walk through.
This game builds to a great climax for sure! Thanks shadow!
Awesome! I just watched it and it does answer all my questions about it! WizKids should package the game with links to your play through videos. I'm really glad I found your channel!
I almost forgot to add great job on all your videos!
That's great to hear Heathgod. That's a great part of this game..the theme is strong and the gameplay really tells a story. Playing feels like an epic adventure. I hope you enjoy when you buy ! Rick.
Thanks Rick! Looking forward to your next playthrough :P
