Starting Laburnum Bonsai From Seed 2021

- Collected some seed from the canal side while walking Cooper. Some seed needs to be overwintered and sown next Spring. If you are unsure for any given species Dr Google will help. In this case it was sown straight away and sprouted within a week or so.
This will be the first video in a new playlist following these seedlings in their journey to become bonsai.

I have the beginnings of an Oak forest and of couse the Zelkova grove. I may do more. I've lost a number of starter trees this year due to erratic watering while we had our new kitchen fitted, but still have plenty. Stay safe
Well timed video Sid. I collected some laburnum seed as well this year, but too late in the season to harden off this year's growth. I'll sow over winter, but it's very helpful to know that they will germinate without stratification.
Also - nice tip soaking your pots in a tub of water. Don't know how many times I washed my transplants away with some overzealous watering! Thanks for sharing!

I wonder how small can the compond leaves get with this species. I hope they do well over winter.
It will be interesting to see. I'll give them some protection over winter but I'm confident most will survive. Stay safe mate
something you might do to increse the odds of success with this species would be to collect the seeds at the end of the last season and rub them between two pieces of sandpaper early in the spring and plant them. this would increase the number of seeds that would sprout and therefore reduce the number of seeds needed. plus if you plant them early in the spring they will have the whole season to grow before winter.
All good points. As has been said though. 'The time to do something is when you think of it lest you forget later'. One good storm could scatter those seeds everywhere making collection more difficult. Fresh seed often germinates well though some does need a cold period of winter to break dormancy. Check specific details for the species of your choice. I had a fair germination rate and though the trees may need a bit of protection this coming winter they should be up to it. Thanks Paul. Only a few weeks, but sadly, for some reason, all but 1 later died on me. I still think collecting fresh in autumn and sowing immediately is the right way to go but not that time.☹️
