I'm the head of Creator Partnerships at Patreon. This video is excellent and makes a ton of great points about how to go about building a successful membership. The "story" you're referring to is what we like to think of as "The Why" for a launch, and that's probably the most important early driver of patronage, with the offering being a very very close 2nd (and the biggest long-term driver).

Loved the video, understanding Patreon and the different ways to approach it makes more sense now. Here are my personal notes/summary of the video
    - A ways to upsell whatever you are doing
    - Include your audience so they enable you to do somethign special
    - no monthly cost to uphold, they only take 8%-12% of the revenue
    - tell a story with the introduction/about section
    - higher goals & tiers should allow you to do more than your usual content
    - Always include the reward of previous tiers in higher tiers
    5 different patreon tier examples
the higher the tier, the more access your supporters get to you/your business
    1) Exclusive knowledge, behind the scenes footage, deleted material - stuff like that, cheap tier
    2) Q&A, hangout sessions, personal call/talk - most expensive tier
    3) Putting your name on something, shoutouts, name in credits of a video - acknowledgment, mid tier
    4) Digital bonuses like CDs or downloads sent to their email
    5) Things you can deliver physically like books, items, whatever you create irl
    26:38 the key takeaway
let me know what else you learned from the video so I can include it in the comment, might save people time when they don't have 30 min to watch the entire video

As someone who is just starting to dabble in content creation and figuring out what my impact could potentially be, Devin Nash is an incredible resource to use. He understands the step by step process people need to follow to not only be successful, but how to better themselves and their content in general. For instance him telling people to think about their "stories" and how is their content worth putting out there. This makes people self reflect on how to better themselves rather mindlessly grinding all the time.

9:30 it is also a question of the size and framing. The big guys have quite a bit of content behind them, so Patreon can be viewed as the support + appreciation for the post content. Here details and a complete narrative are important. But is the same true for smaller folks? Or should you hit more of an elevator pitch if you are small?

    • @creatingtailedstories
      @creatingtailedstories 3 роки тому

@@Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken this is not what I wrote though. Sure, good promotion will help, but a bit too generic.
Bigger content creators will have more content and can provide value from materials behind the scenes and other things like that. They can do it, because someone is already engaged with a content.
Question I was trying to ask, if you are smaller, are you limited to elevator pitch style of promo (here is what coming kind of thing)? Or is there value doing a longer form for pay?

    • @Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken
      @Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken 3 роки тому

@@creatingtailedstories, and I'll say it once again, why would you be limited to WHAT is to come?
You say what you are DOING, and if you so choose, potential things to come if they make sense.
Most of what he said is suggestions and examples. Not exact things you have to do. Just because you can't do behind the scenes doesn't mean you can't do something else that makes it more personal for the viewer.
Seems you need to dig deeper if you can't figure that step out. It should be a rather simple one.
Like he said, you need to know WHAT you have to offer, otherwise you have bigger issues. Seems you're in that category right now.

This past month I started teaching myself Blender to create animations and I decided to make a Patreon. In my first month I’ve got 13 Patrons and make 55~ish a month but I don’t have any tiers and instead have it up as a tip jar. Most people in my “niche” have theirs as tip jars as well with no tiers. So I’m wondering if I should do what everyone else does, or implement tiers. I just need to figure out what I’d give for higher tiers.

Thanks Devin i've been struggling with my patreon and this puts it back at the forefront of my mind. I have a $5, $25, $5000, and $10,000 tiers, the page definitely needs some more polish but I am confident that I can make this work.
It has not been easy finding my artistic path. While I have been in art classes since elementary school, realizing that I could pursue my creative desires has been very difficult. Without completely realizing it I had acquired a variety of artistic skills.
I remember when I first realized that I had some skill with drawing in middle school. We had to copy an image that was upside down and in a grid. I really enjoyed that assignment, it showed me how to break an image up into little pieces, the grid is also a useful technique for drawing something larger than the reference you may have.
It wasn't until later in high school that I began to take more art classes. Learning how to work with clay, paints, wire, digital art. I was also able to take some college courses while in high school furthering my skills in photography, music, 3D Graphics, image and video editing. While in college I wasn't sure what I my major should be so I worked on general courses towards my degree and included art when I could.
The last class I remember was drawing. My favorite part of the class was critique. To have an opportunity for my work to be seen and to receive feedback so that I can improve was invaluable to me and allowed me to learn how to also give feedback in a way that was respectful.
After college, art took a back seat in my life I would do odd jobs like working at a motorcycle shop or being a horse carriage driver. I never considered at that time that I could use my creative ability to support myself.
It is only in the past few years that I feel like I really have a chance to make something of myself with the skills that I have acquired and now I am working towards that goal with my 1frog9 channel
    thanks for reading!

There was some kind of fund raiser for a game called bloodstained.
My friends cousin who I knew was a big fan of the genre of game (metroidvania) but didn't speak to often, donated a large amount and they had a tier where they would put you in the game somewhere. He forgot about it. And I've played the game several times seeing a PORTRAIT enemy that has someone who looks very similar to him. And one day a whole year and a half after release. I decided to show my friend this enemy. And we asked if it was him and he said it is him!! and they emailed him asking him for a picture before the games release and he had forgotten all about it and he didn't even notice he was in the game himself having played through it.
If I ever have an opportunity to support something I care about to that degree. I probably will.

The thing is about this and the entire culture behind it, it's all about donations because what...? The real prices of things do not match the value it creates? People are not willing to pay the real value of things? Out entire payment system is fucked?
I don't know....but as a German it feels rly awkward to ask for money as bonus payment just for some small extra benefits the customer gets
