We paint to be happy, so we should always be happy when painting. It is appreciated how members of the painting community, whose work and teaching skill we look up to such as yourself, have taken time recently to share the importance of practicing mental health while still stretching one's boundaries as an artist. Many thanks to you and other artists who emphasize enjoyment while chasing perfection. Keep up the great work.

Congratulations. Thanks for sharing your trip to the awards ceremony but also your journey from chasing perfection to pleasing yourself. A lot of top performers get into the adrenaline of the win or alternatively competing due to a fear of failure as a motivation. Both of these motivations can have deleterious effects on your mental health. I think what you mean when you say you “paint for fun” is now you find the process of painting brings you happiness and not chasing an award. That being said I can understand wanting to enter a competition as a way of connecting with other painters and the community as well as getting feedback on your work at a high level and a chance to self evaluate as well. Thanks for putting things in perspective by talking about stepping away from painting and then returning for your own reasons and for sharing this.

Completely missed the point. I had not planned to enter Everchosen. I just happened to paint this mini I really enjoyed and - probably because of that did really well in the competition too. I didn't compete in anything for like 7 years before that. And I felt the negative feelings flare up again when I "only" placed third. I was putting the award up regardless, because I wanted to remember the fun I had and remind myself to paint for fun...but you probably don't care about any of this anyway because you just wanted to make a snarky comment towards someone you don't know anything about :)

@@trovarion No worries, I was kidding around. Sarcasm doesn’t always translate well in text. The joy of miniature painting is why most (if not all of us) do this. Competitions are a way to test ourselves for sure, but if the process isn’t enjoyable it’s worthless.

Once the chase for perfect drawing pictures has already killed in me all desire to do it. Watching at works of many modern CG painters I caught myself thinking that I could never achieve even an approximate result. It was a really big blow for me after which my Cintique has turned into a reminder of my old aspirations.
Years after miniature painting gave me a second breath. It was different, but at the same time the same - enter to the world of creativity.
And after such an experience the idea of not turning this hobby into torture was the main when I ask the question for myself whether I want to do it on a professional basis or not.
My skills in this were not enough to make a living, but luckily, the work I am doing now I really enjoy, it gives me enough money to live and allows me to have such a hobby as painting miniatures.
In this circumstances I can spend so much time on painting, as I wanted. Of course, I understand that this gives me some concessions to keep painting single model for a weeks without much progress as an artist, but at the same time, although a mountain of unpainted miniatures keep growing, I still love it and different fantasy and sci-fi scenarios are still live in my head.

If I had to spend hundreds of hours on a model, I would simply pass away. I don't like basecoating. I don't like edge highlighting, but I do like the loosey goosey stuff between those two, and I enjoy having beautiful, painted models to look at in my display case! Spending 5 hours on a single trooper model is antithetical to that goal.

Take this as a grain of salt because I only have a background in art school and hobby painting, not competition painting (nevermind the fact I've never come close to winning a Golden Demon or Crystal Brush!). After having looked through the entries and seeing the winners, some thoughts:
    - It's obvious why the top 3 are in the top 3. They all excel on a technical level, from blending to texture. There's a few of the others that come close, but the top 3 push everything else out of the way. Brushstrokes are intentional when they show, the blending is seamless, and there's a clear understanding of composition and color theory.
    - I see what you mean about the base. 2nd. and 3rd. place seem like they're using a "stock" base, and while the 1st. place entry has a pillar included in the sculpt, the rest of the base is built around this to integrate it into a single piece. I think you could have inched out a 2nd. place finish if your model had done more in this aspect. As you said, you didn't do more on the base and it held back any story that could have been told. One of the things drilled into me by a professor was that you a) need to commit to the task fully, regardless of how you initially feel about it and b) you either make the time or you accept the piece will be unfinished. Running out of time can't be an excuse.
    - In other videos, I know you've talked about how GW's painting competitions have become more reluctant regarding conversions. Looking at the other entries, I see what you mean. There's a lot of stock models straight out of a GW kit. There's hardly (if any) conversions and only some light kit-bashing. But it made me wonder if judges get fatigued by seeing the same model? I'm not knowledgeable about the "meta" of competition painting, but there does seem to be one. There's over a dozen Bob Gillymens, Abaddons, and Rutgock Troll Goths pieces. The 1st. place entry I think is the only one of its kind in the entire gallery. There's only 2 or 3 other Myrmidons and maybe half a dozen Wurmspat. I wonder if you would have chosen a less popular kit if you would have placed higher? I don't think there's a single Dark Eldar or Dwarf Slayer entry.
Those are just some thoughts I had watching this. Great job on making it that far! I hope this was a useful critique and I don't want to come off as dismissive of the hard work that went into getting an award. The model you entered has a lot of skill and thought put into it, and it shows.
