In 1989 I worked in a Govt funded facility that's main focus was reverse engineering military equipment from other countries to see where they ranked compared to ours. One morning, there was a meeting in our SCIF that my clearance was not high enough to attend. My clearance was above Top Secret .that meeting was basically Generals, and Admirals and whoever they deemed necessary to attend. The meeting was about a Device we were supposed to be breaking down to figure out what it was and how it worked. We could do neither. All we knew was that it produced extremely high voltage at regular intervals and it made one of our guys Rad-badge go black in a couple of seconds. That is a lethal dose of radiation. It was deemed too dangerous to even work with. One thing we did glean from it was the fact that if it was made by man, it would have been Neanderthals who did it. It was that old. So either there was an advanced civilization from this planet at about that time that surpasses ours, or it was not from this planet.
What did it look like? Size, material properties?
IF it was a device from an alien civilization it still doesn't mean that they carried it here in a spacecraft. It could have simply drifted here over millions or billions of years and crash landed to Earth. I'm not saying it's true but I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla made it. You said it was very old so you can probably rule that out. It could very well be some kind of beacon.

@@tedunguent156 The odds of a device just happening to drift onto a habited planet, and in the time frame at which we could study or even find it, just seem far more unlikely than it being purposefully brought and forgotten or lost.
Unless it was a probe placed in earth's orbit (for whatever reason) and gravity finally pulled it down.
If so it probably would have burnt up on reentry.
