Bobby Murcer was a very special man. He was one of the kindest, gentlest, most caring human beings to ever grace the Yankee pinstripes. He then took those qualities with him up to the booth to become one of the Yankees all-time great announces. Murcer had a valiant battle with cancer later in life, which he fought with the same grace and grit that he played the game of baseball with. He was beloved by everyone who graced his presence in his time of Earth. There is no doubt in the minds of everyone at Yankee Stadium that special day, August 6, 1979, that Thurman Munson, the Yankee captain and leader, who left this Earthly life so tragically early, was with Bobby when Murcer single-handedly won that game with his greatest effort of the 1979 season. Murcer was initially told he would not be playing in that game, but he fought like hell to be in the lineup, and fate took hold after that. It is one of the more underrated and inspirational moments in Major League Baseball history, and should be treated as such in the annals of MLB lore.

Exactly I remember that game he was very close to Thurman Munson so was Lou Piniella, very well stated I felt the team was never really the same after that.
People who saw this game as it unfolded will never forget it. One of the most memorable, emotional wins in any sport I can remember. Hollywood could never improve on this moment.
I really did seem like destiny, almost religious in the way it happened. It was like God was saying that they had lost their leader, but they would not lose out on the chance to pay him the ultimate tribute.
I was 13 and I’ll never forget it or where i was when I heard about Thurman. I’m proud I got see him play.
The only thing that comes close was a big comeback win the Red Sox had soon after the marathon bombing.

This almost seemed to be a preordained ending. The cheering that went on for close to ten minutes the day after his death, and then this comeback win on the day he was buried are moments that transcend time, space and words.
It should be noted that Tippy Martinez, the pitcher who lost the game, had pitched to Thurman as a Yankee from 1973-1976. He had developed a good relationship with Thurman. As he left the mound he looked up at the sky as if to say, “that was for you big guy.” He did not groove the pitch. Murder beat him fair and square. That was probably the only time in his career he left the mound after losing a game and wasn’t the slightest bit disappointed about it.
I watched this game live on TV. One of the most emotional games I've ever seen. Will never forget it.

I can't believe it's 40 years ago today the Bobby Murcer walk off game was played. As all Yankees fans know back then it was a gut wrenching and emotional game. The irony of this game is when Bobby Murcer a close friend of Thurman's delivered the eulogy at Munson's funeral. After the funeral the Yankees had to play a night game against the Orioles. Bobby could've not play the game but decided to play. So in the bottom of the 7th with the Yankees down 4-0 Murcer hit a 3 run homer to make it 4-3. Going to the bottom of the 9th Bobby hit a 2 run single to give the Yankees a dramatic comeback walk off 5-4 win. Murcer would drive in all of the Yankees five runs. RIP Bobby RIP Captain 😥🙏
This was amazing watching this as a kid, so emotional, a heart warming tribute to the great Thurman Munson from Bobby Mercer and his Yankees teammates. This call by Howard Cosell was Cosell at his very best and shows, when in his prime, he had no equal.
I watched this with my dad, very emotional moment, not even a Yankee fan, but this still chokes me up.
There wasn't a dry eye in the house. R.I.P Munson & Murcer.😥😥
They interviewed Craig Nettles about this game he said "when Bobby Murcer hit that game winning base hit on the field we were celebrating like we won the World Series but back in the clubhouse the mouring started back again except for Bobby Murcer he was too exhausted going without sleep delivering a eulogy for his friend and playing that night when Billy Martin was going to rest him but Bobby wanted to play for his friend they are now on God's baseball team.
Loved Mercer. Such a nice man when he got older too. I was only 2 when this happened but I remember my mom and dad talking about it for years.

They were grieving more than celebrating. This was more than just a baseball game, you can see it in that big hug from pinella, and even the 2 trainers. It was like one big family grieving together

I was at this game, in the left field grandstand with a bird’s eye view of the game winning double. It was a strange night, with plenty of sadness and frustration, as the Orioles were the better team that year and showed no signs of letting up. There were some Oriole’s fans around us, very proud of their team, but everyone knew this was a night for peace, a night to celebrate a true champion. All seemed lost most of the night, but late in the game - 7th or 8th inning, Murcer hit that three run shot that made it a game at, 4 - 3, Orioles. And then as the ninth unfolded, and it came down to Murcer again, he seemed destined to get the key hit, and he did. The night was electric. We celebrated in the stands just as the players did on the field, with heavy hearts, but proud to be Yankee fans, as they were proud to be Yankees.

I remember watching this game on T.V. It was such an emotional experience I can’t believe it been 45 years already I was 15 years old when Thurman Munson passed alway I’m now 60 years old.

I remember it oh so well … what a tribute to Thurman … years later i drove Bobby Murcer when he was guest speaking in Syracuse NY. What a thrill for me and my limousine service to have that opportunity to not only meet him but share time with him. A true gentleman and a very warm loving man. I overheard his conversation with his wife .. she was blessed with such a loving husband. I am blessed as well for spending time with him. He passed away six months later… truly a giant with Yankee fans 🙏❤️💙
Never met Bobby but met Yogi Twice. He was one of the nicest people i ever met. He bought me a beer at the REAL Yankee stadium

The sixth time I watched this video I stopped crying. The seventh time (now) I cried again.
Since Thurman and Bobby were so close it's amazing that Bobby was the hero after being so broken up at the death of Thurman Munson and then Bobby went out and drove in all 5 runs. A miracle.
Bobby was my favorite baseball player ever I think I started becoming a fan of his 1971 when he hit .331. I used to have his poster as well. Baseball is so good in those times.

I wasn’t even alive then but watching these highlights gives me goosebumps. Go Yankees. Drive by Akron-Canton Airport all the time. I know where the spot of the crash was. It’s been pointed out to me several times growing up.
I was watching this game on Monday night baseball. Yanks came back from 14.5 games back the prior year and were around the same amount back going into this game. After this amazing Murcer performance after the tragedy i remember thinking we’re gonna come back again and win the division like it was easy or something. I was 11 years old and full of hope!

How much did I love Bobby Murcer as a kid? I loved him so much that if not trading him after the 1974 season meant a few more years of mediocrity, so be it! I would rather have lost rooting for Murcer than won watching the Bobby Bonds, Carlos Mays, et. al., who followed. Truth.
Bobby Murcer must have been a nice guy to play for those horrible San Francisco and Chicago Cubs teams. Bobby’s skills were fading with the Cubs but he always gave it his all. Cubs traded a rising star 3rd baseman Bill Madlock for him. They didn’t want to pay Madlock.
Same here. Steinbrenner would have still brought in star players, and Murcer could have been a world series champ.

I'm guessing most people aren't aware that Tippy Martinez (who pitched for the Yankees before being traded to the Orioles in '76), was pretty close to Thurman. He grooved Murcer one fastball purposely as a "tribute" to Thurman. Luckily Murcer made the most of it. You can see Tippy looking skyward to Munson as he's walking off the mound. Great ending to a terribly sad occasion.

Murcer should have never been traded. Gabe Paul was an idiot --- I had heard that he laughed after he hung up the phone on Bobby after telling him he was traded. Many have said that his trade helped set up the Yankees for their World Series run (Rivers, Figueroa, etc), but Steinbrenner would have brought in winning pieces with Murcer there.

I had forgotten how annoying Howard Cosell was. As soon as the winning run crossed the plate he went on a 90 second monologue with his usual pomposity. Why not let the viewers enjoy the moment? He almost ruined it.

Murcer, a lefty hitter against a good lefty pitcher on an 0-2 count delivers the game winning, walk off hit, driving in all Yankee runs after giving a eulogy for Thurman Munson earlier in the day, etc. The power of the human spirit!

3-run home run, walk off hit. The Yankees needed 5 runs to win that game and Bobby Murcer drove in all of them. The day after burying Thurman Munson. If you saw this in a movie you'd roll your eyes.
