Spanish silver was *The Go To World Standard* for hundreds of years. In the US, the 8 Reale coins and their fractional divisions were accepted with official sanction until 1857. For centuries the coins set the standard worldwide for quality, weight and purity. So much so that, in 1776, Thomas Jefferson recommended to the Continental Congress that the fledgling U.S. use the Spanish Milled Dollar as our monetary unit.

In 2003, I worked with a buddy of mine who had an employee who traveled to Mexico about every 6 weeks. I asked him if there were Onzas for sale near where he was going and he said there were guys with buckets of them. So I gave him $200 and asked him to buy what he could. Back then they were about $5. First time he came back emptyhanded. OK, next time. They started being $6 but he again came back emptyhanded. Next time, same. Next time same, but now $7. And then they were about $9. The last time, he said nobody was selling them any more. You could only go the bank and buy them brand new, with a big premium. I got my money back, never lost any money, but I was kind of pissed off that I didn't get any $5 and $6 onzas.
I have a Mexican 5 paso coin from 1950 its got a train and palm trees a very nice coin.

This is a great topic and what is interesting is this is one of the major industries in Mexico that is not bothered by the cartels.
When you got a handful of Mexican silver you know it. It has a completely different feel and sound. Just really quality stuff. The 1947-1948 Cinco Pesos are wonderful and the 8 Reales are just works of art with so much information struke right into the coins. Hell I really haven't met a piece of Mexicali Silver I didn't like. The edge lettering, the copious amounts of 🐍🦅crest, and they really were early to the race on security features. Great vid.

I love mexican silver lol before getting into collecting silver coins, i am a gem/mineral collector and all of the silver ore minerals from Mexico are awesome! But the best wire silver specimens come from Kongsberg, Norway and ancient Germany 🙂

I was just in Tijuana a month ago, I heard you could buy silver at the banks in Mexico. I asked some locals and they told me no, no silver there. I was hoping to get some libertads for cheap.

Not all banks sell them, maybe try a "casa de cambio". I go to mexico, 4 times a year to visit family. That's were I get my libertads from.
I have several 1977-79 Mexican 100 Peso coins, they are .72 Ley and weigh in at 20g of silver. I love that coin because it it was a daily use coin that my mom and dad would have used. I want to get into Mexican gold coins, starting with the 2 peso and 2.5 pesos. then work my way up.
Hard times for miners back then. Wow .. couldn't imagine

I have a couple of tubes of 80's libertads. But not one silver eagle. I'd rather stack libertad and onza's over the eagles. The only American coins I own are Platinum Lady Liberties. I Love the history of Mexican silver which I guess is why I prefer to stack it. Plus they always produce far fewer coins than the US mint. Meaning my libertads may be considered more collectible as compared to mass produced silver eagles. And they sell for about the same price during year of production but vary after that. Same as kooks and pandas. Its bullion but its not.

There's a big shortage of Mexican bullion in Canada. I have been looking for a 1985 ONZA for years, in spite of the fact that it is quite a common coin. When they do show up, they are usually close to spot, but if I were to buy from eBay, the prices are horrendous. Like #94.
