Impossible Game Boy DMG LCD Screen Swap - Desoldering the LCD from the PCB

- Check out my new video for a much easier method: • Easy Game Boy DMG LCD ...
In this video I attempt to remove and replace a Gameboy screen by desoldering it from the PCB w/o damaging it and then soldering it back in place. This could make backlight mods easier to do and would allow salvaging the DMG screen for spare parts if doing a Game Boy pocket to DMG screen mod. Tools used:
www.amazon.com...
WEP858D Hot Air rework station
Hakko FX888D Soldering Station
Spudger Set
This is so damn impressive. I've fixed hundreds of DMGs but was never able to properly do a transplant like this.
Ya, I tried removing the screen on a gameboy and reinstalling it just to see if I could do it. You need a very heat officiant iron and plenty of flux.
I'm impressed. I thought this was an impossible feat to accomplish and you did it. I've peeled the reflective film off 4 Gameboys so far and only destroyed 1 LCD (the glass started peeling apart). I'll have to test out removing the 1st ribbon, if anything at least. Thanks for a ray of hope!
Nice soldering skills, this looks crazy difficult.
use a smaller hot air tip. I did one nearly perfect without touching the plastic at all.... It had a slight issue with the tail end near the plastic trey that holds the screen looks kinda like it was a factory issue though. Find damaged DMG 101's and keep pluggin. Update: I did one perfect today! Now for the screen removal and then I'm gonna be placing a RGB backlight mod on it. Thank you for having the video it helped me come up with a new idea!
Stumbled upon this video by accident, great work!
Wow. You're the man. You actually did it. That needs a lot of patience...I PASS! XD
+Víctor Hugo Valdez Soto haha, thanks. I was pretty excited when I saw that it still worked.
Thanks for the video and great job. This might encourage more people to try this. For the video it might be better if you explain what you're doing while you're doing it (or add textoverlay with things like unsoldering-temperature, etc. ) but I know how hard it is to talk while concentrating on work. Enjoyed and subscribed!
+Mathias P you're welcome and thank you. Good suggestions. I think the way to do this is going to be with chip quik. I bought some but I haven't had time to try it and do another video yet. I'll try to make that one more of a "how-to" if it works as well as I think it will.
Just unsoldering the first ribbon cable under the clip makes taking off the polarisation much easier, when you flipped the screen out of the way I thought 'holy shit, maybe I could give this a go!'
Cheers for it and good work on not killing yer boy! ;-)
thanks!
where would i buy a replacement screen? mine has a big crack in the corner (and lines coz if it)
I haven't heard a civil horn in ages!
John Adams I was wondering if anyone would notice that. It's the shift change siren for the local shipyard which is more than a mile or two away from me!
Nice job hand soldering that. I was expecting you to use the heat gun. I have a cheap one from China and I don't know if I can trust the temperature display on it either.
Voila!
Yeah I wonder if one could make a module which would replace the DMG-01's original screen with a backlit one? Convert the signals using a tiny SOC or something?
Such a module if it were for resale might have to be a total top board replacement, though. Including the input pads, etc. Hmm.
there's some rocket genius that's built such a module for the GB color from what I understand.

You are THE BOSS... Niiiiiice job!
Please make a video if you ever come up with a perfected method for this. It'd be nice to know how to do this as working DMGs become more and more scarce in the future.
+Galactiac I think I have an easy way to do this and, if it works like I think it's going to, I'm going to make a video on how to use it to do backlight mods - no more torn ribbons and much easier to get the back of the LCD clean. Unfortunately it's going to be a while before I can get around to doing it...
+8bitjunkie Eagerly awaiting... :)
1 year later, hopefully I will have the video up next week.

Impressive 😍 awesome job
amazing work
OMG, this is insane! :-)
I did this with a pocket, failed... XD
TheDarkmore I think I have a way that will make this easy enough that almost anyone can do it. Stay tuned...
Still waiting for the easy version ;).
ok ok
Víctor Hugo Valdez Soto I recorded it last night. It worked just like I hoped. I may have the video edited and posted sometime next week. Thanks for the motivation ;).
Sounds great!
Please upload it!
Thanks to you for sharing your experiments!
Any chance you could do a tutorial on swapping a GB Pocket screen into a DMG? I really want to do one. Thanks.
Do you have any good links for reference?
I don't have a tutorial yet, but I've been looking. I do know it exists. I'll post something if I find it. Keep your eyes out, yourself, too! It's out there somewhere!
found it: www.thursdaycustoms.com/2014/06/pocket-lcd-in-original-game-boy.html & chipmusic.org/forums/topic/14000/solved-pocket-lcd-in-dmg/
were i buy this lcd
Is that useful is you want to fix dead horizontal lines on a DMG screen? I think I created some horizontal lines on mine after successfully fixing some vertical lines it had when I bought it.
at about 7:10 into the video was that an air raid siren going off warning of a tornado or something LOL or was it something on your TV?
Matthew King it's the shift change siren at the shipyard a few miles from me. Very loud!
i you use low melt solder you could get it off without using hotair
stay tuned...
where I can Buy the new lcd screen replacement?
I have one with a black splotch in the middle of the screen that's there whether it's turned on or off. I thought maybe the splotch was on the backing and that just attempting to mod it with a backlight would end up fixing it but the splotch is still there, just clear colored rather than black without the green backing. Is there a way to fix that or is there anyone that sells the actual LCD screen to replace the whole screen?
lcd cancer can't be repaired. I don't know of a source for replacement LCDs sorry
Hi, I have 3 horisontal dead lines, I planing to apply my hot air gun on the right white strip, do you think it'll work to reglue and the dead lines respawn?
Hey did that work? I'm curious
consensus says horizontal lines can't be fixed but I've heard people claim that they were able to repair w/ hot air. I haven't tried it.
What would you charge to repair my original gameboy screen. It has a couple of vertical lines on the right side of the screen, but otherwise, works fine and plays games. Also interested in the backlight MOD, even though I have the light screen attachment.
Shannon Watts vertical lines can be fixed, not horizontal. Look up a tutorial.
can't take any work right now, but I know someone that might be able to. email me at 8bitjunkie8@gmail.com
Horizontal lines can be fixed. Look up a tutorial.
I dont know if its just me but i cant find a video about a full lcd screen replacement, do people just prefer to save the original lcd sreen by fixing the dead lines i mean to me id rather just replace the whole thing or is that too much work.
+VideosAreDrugs a) as far as I know, this is the only video on youtube showing that this is even possible (although I'm sure I'm not the only person that's ever done it), b) there's nowhere to buy replacement LCDs for the original Game Boy, c) fixing dead lines is faster and easier than taking the screen off. OTOH, if you had a GB w/ a broken screen and another one with a good screen but a bad circuit board, this might be a good option.
8bitjunkie
Ive seen a few on a ebay:P But i guess your right.
+VideosAreDrugs Fixing the vertical lines is relatively easy, and no one has or manufactures replacement LCDs. If you're problem is just the vertical lines, it's better to just fix that, otherwise you'll have to buy one for parts and then go to all this trouble swapping them.
If the actual LCD itself is damaged though, well, not much choice there.
can i swap a beige dmg01 pcb to my black play it loud gameboy
probably, but I'm not sure.
Pretty sure the internals between Grey DMG and Play it Loud DMG are the same. So it should work. Just don't quote me on that.
I'm not spoiled gameboy.... you can give me one site to buy a screen
how to buy the the screen ??
+batusay3232 nowhere that I know of.
I have a Game Boy almost new, but the screen has a black spot in the center of the screen. that is why I am asking
your best bet would be to find a broken one but that has a good screen for sale
ok , thanks
Umm why did you think it was okay to use a hot air station that isn't celebrated? And how about taking your time
