Yes, String Builder is absolutely the best pedagogically sound method. I use all 5 books with my students. Then we continue with 3 octave scales and standard Etudes after that. I absolutely abhor the Suzuki method as well.

THANK you such a GREAT video! That’s the stuff UA-cam is lacking. Methodical and to the point. I missed your violin-related uploads

It all depends on the natural talent of the students. I’ve taught a few 4 and 5 year olds who sailed through the Suzuki books, also older kids and even adults who did really well with Suzuki. Then I’ve also had students of various ages who just couldn’t manage the fast progress of the Suzuki method. All about strings goes a lot slower. I have yet to use String builder, that seems painstakingly slow! I do like the Applebaum “Building technique with beautiful melodies” series.

Thank you for your suggestions. Violin is an instrument that does need a teacher indeed! Apparently is so simple but believe me that is extremely complicated if you have never had one. Keep on teaching! Good Luck!

What books would you recommend for someone who has been playing for 6 years? I wish to improve my over all skills, like improving my rhythm and being able to understand the key signatures better since we were never really introduced to it in school.

I've never heard of these books! With my students i always used Essential Elements because of how it has a clear picture of where to put the fingers to match the fingertapes. I'll have to check out those other books!

How funny that you mentioned essential elements. I actually dislike that particular method. I know lots of orchestra teachers like that. I personally am not a fan but it might work if you have to teach few kids at once.

@@Violinista How funny. Does the ones you mentioned come with accompaniment CDs? I know that's one reason the teachers in my area use them for when they're practicing alone. I do private lessons, I teach violin, viola and cello.

Hello ma'am I need your help.
I am 18 years old and wanted to learn violin but I don't have any teacher so I want to learn by myself... I want your suggestion about which book I should use for learning? Actually I don't have any musical background and I don't know about musical notes reading etc. And also I am a lefty so would it be hard for me to learn to use the bow? If it is possible, then please give me a reply ma'am.

Are you a student or teacher. Im just finishing up All for Strings book 1. Ive been working on it for 4.5 months. 1.5 to 2 hrs per day. I plan to continue reviewing for 4 to 6 more weeks before moving on. I do feel like there are way too many excersises in the book though. It takes work to learn new excersises and continue to keep up with the older ones. Im wondering if she or you go through every excersise or cherry pick the most crucial excersises

@@lukemanriquez5236 actually i've quit from using these books (i'm a teacher). too much cluttering on the pages, too much information, i like something more clean. and exercises in excess. with 140 exercises in another books i can reach Bach's Minuet 1 or even something more complex with my students. but this is me. my tastes. the method is good, i just didn't like it too much for my style of teaching. but you are ok doing it for 5 months, above all you must be playing tha last lessons very well to go to the next book.

@@ElsweyrDiego Ive been feeling the same way about the book so far. Im on excersise 173 and I went though too much qauntity to get there. Im constantly trying to learn a new page and also try to keep up with excersise 75 and upward. Eventually excersises get left behind due to qauntity. Im thinking of starting the suzuki books after i finish All fr strings bk 1. Do you have any books you can recommend with less qauntity and more quality? Im aiming to get to wohlfahrt op. 45. I keep hearing though, from different sources to do a method bk vol. 1-3, followed by suzuki bk. 1-3 then you should be ready for Wohlfahrt op 45. If there is a faster way I would love to hear about it. 😄😄. But maybe you just have to put in the time.

@@lukemanriquez5236 you don't need to go back to past exercises, what is important is the exercise you're in right now must be mastered, so you can go to the next. if you will go back, just go back 3 or 4 numbers at max. if you study well you don't need to do this very often, because each new exercise introduces new things and uses many things introduced in past exercises. for wohlfahrt you don't need to finish suzuki 3, halfawy on suzuki 2 you are ready to go to wohlfahrt if you have played all the pices very well. what i'd recommend to you is: on IMSLP we have a compilation from Seybold called "new violin studies school" Op.182. it's a compilation of 12 book, it goes from beginning until advanced. you already know some scales from All for strings, so you can jump right now on the first book of seybold and see if isn't too hard. if still hard, go back there after minuet 1 on suzuki 1. from there you can use literally just this compilation and nothing more regarding studies, it uses studies from wohlfardt, kreutzer, meerts, etc etc. use it for your technique building, along with suzuki for pieces and another book of scales and arpeggios (hrimaly scale studies is a good option). the most important thing is to know what each Étude is trying to do with your technique, don't just pass by the exercises. they need to be really mastered before moving to the next.

I am headed for Suzuki book 4, but I’m pretty sure I am not ready for Suzuki 4 yet. I am in a program online that says it addresses the jump between books 3-4, but I am feeling a bit let down in that it’s the exact material from books2-3 that I already paid for. I want repertoire, which I did have from four years of method books. But I personally hate Suzuki’s method or lack thereof. How can I fill in the blanks between books 3-4 in Suzuki without giving up working on repertoire in the meantime? Thanks!
