In 50 years of installing roofs We never installed rolled or weaved valleys. Some day maybe the rest of the roof lazy's will start installing open metal valleys and realize that it's the best way to do it.

I absolutely would recommend a replacement.

I point out to my customers that repairs aren’t 100%. I mean I’ve been doing this for years and would say my repair success rate is 90% on sloped roofs and better on torch down.
The liability for that failed 10% shouldn’t be on the guy (me!) who’s there trying to help.
It should lie on the crap job the guy did before you arrived.
BTW that valley would perform A LOT better if the guy had trimmed the top layer back another 2” from the bottom of the valley. I taper my cut line from 2” at the top to 3” at the bottom so it flares out. Also like you said cut those tops out so they don’t catch water
These closed cut valleys are the only way to go when you have a steep roof tying into a low pitch. A metal valley would work great in this application though!
    Full replacement BTW 👍

When you roll or weave valleys it's exactly that which you are describing. The moisture keeps the underside of the top layer wet for a prolonged period thus prematurely damaging the shingle asphalt and the advanced rusting of the nails. Doing repairs is an absolute pain as you need to get down to the base ice shield, felt and plywood. Obviously a total tearout is the only way to be 100 percent.

I'm not a professional roofer, but I have helped on a lot of jobs, and also did roofing as a helper many moons ago in high school back in the 80's when we only had hammers and 3 tab shingles (no nailers)....... I would not repair it because at some point some other roofer is gonna say that your "repair" allowed the problem to fester and ruin a bunch of plywood, which is probably already ruined anyway. They are gonna say if you'd have told them it needed immediate replacement that maybe the wood would still be good and they will think you should take responsibility and make things right. Homeowners also have foggy memory on crap like this down the road, so get it all in writing whenever you do make repairs.

The repair would be a big risk to you with little reward. Better to reroof. Got to protect that reputation. Did that valley have a pan?

So how much would it cost to replace that valley like you suggested doing the entire valley to be on the safe side with water and ice shield.

You could repair I but it looks like nearly 2squate cause I wouldn't tie in with those staggers as is so 2shingles wide either side of the valley.
That transition needed to b flashed right

Two bigger fields pooring into a weaved valley is best in my opinion

When you get poor workmanship on multiple different areas, you don’t want to be responsible for any future problems. So I’d say no to a repair and offer to quote for roof replacement

    Is Samsung sponsoring your videos?
I have a coworker that is having shingle roof put on her house this month in Pennsylvania. I told her she should wait because the shingles probably won’t seal down. She said the guy told her they have special shingles that will. I told her he is lying to you. So I’ll wait to hear about her shingles blowing off.

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  2 роки тому +1

Yes I agree sounds like he was lying to her! They have changed the seal strip to activate at a lower temperature, but we are pretty far through fall and I doubt they will seal unless we have a warm day with a lot of sun. With that said they should not blow off if they're installed good with the nails being in the right location and they're not in the middle of a cornfield.

After viewing the video, It looks as though someone replaced the roof, and basically just matched the shingles up.That line runs straight down the middle where water will run through and possibly be creating a place for the water to leak inside the house.

You can only put so many bandaids on a broken roof. Explain to the customer why patching isn’t in their, or your, best interests.

It would take twice as long to repair it. Needs a new roof. I prefer the original California cut valley but understand the new California style is idiot proof
