This was so well explained. I have an almost 3 year old who has been going to nursery since 1 and think you've done a fab job at breaking this down and both options seem very reasonable (£65-£70 per day in the South!) Some things to consider is whether nappies and wipes are included as you might have to factor this into your cost. Also some nurseries close for a week at christmas and you still have to pay, also bank holidays they close but you still have to pay (not sure about child minders) - you might want to consider this when picking which days little one will go to nursery and also ask if they charge when your child is on holiday. Some positives about paying for a full day at nursery means if you are stuck in traffic, running late etc theres not as much rush or if you want to pick up a few bits from the supermarket on the way. Also you will find when they first start nursery they get ill a lot while their immune systems build up , nurseries often have the capacity to separate children where there's been an outbreak of something. For example right now, my child does 3 days a week and they have split the age into 3 bubbles and kept the full timers separate etc to help with the current situation. Hope that helps!

We use tax free at my children’s nursery and although it’s usually over 38 weeks they spread it over the whole year so that during summer holidays the price stays the same, although it makes it a tiny bit more expensive each month we’d rather that than have a huge bill every summer! Great video. I wish I had this video when my daughter went through nursery. Just worth noting the following: 1. Every nursery applies the 30 free hours differently. Ask for their breakdown as legally they don't have to apply this discount to food or nappies. 2. 30 free hours is not available if one parent makes more than £100k. Even if one parent makes £100k and the other makes £0. But is available if both parents make £95k 🤨 3. When calculating nursery vs child minder, you will have to include nappies for the childminder.

To get the 30 hours funding BOTH parents have to be working (there’s a minimum weekly amount that both parents have to earn). Childcare choices account has helpful advice. If only one parent is working or one parent earns under the weekly amount, you can only claim 15 hours (which everyone is entitled too.)

Two tips, from a mum of a now 13 year old. 1. Nurseries either charge extra for nappies/wipes or you can bring your own. 2. The nursery is a good option because that extra hour gives you time to allow for traffic issues and even nipping into the shop for things for tea without an antsy little person 😁 also if a childminder is on holiday/off sick it’s hard to get cover, whereas nursery find it if staff are absent.

Some nurseries will stretch the 30 hours over a yr but this will mean less hrs per week so it still totals the same if it was just term time if that makes sense. Also some childminders do the 30 hrs and the tax free childcare. Love the video.... So informative.

Love that you’re figuring your costs out too!! It’s such a daunting task isn’t it!! As far as I understand it, you have a portal online and then you put in say £800 and the govt top it up by £200! So you don’t actually have to pay upfront (i don’t think!!) xxx

You can transfer via a bank transfer (they give you specific details) which takes about two hours to clear. You can also pay by card but it takes a couple of days to clear. Really easy to use and manage though!

Amazing! So pleased you found it helpful!! Honestly, for the everyday stuff (nappies/wipes/formula) it’s pretty much £50-£60 extra a month! In terms of bigger stuff, each different stage we have bought different things (a high chair, a car seat, a baby carrier ect and then of course clothes for each stage too!) I put away £50 a month for big baby buys/clothes so that when it comes to buying them, I always have a pot of money to dip into!xx

Just watched this video as someone who sends my daughter to both nursery and a childminder. It does seem like nursery is more expensive but that includes 3 meals a day whereas you usually have to provide all meals if sending your child to a childminders so the costs of both balance themselves out.
You only get the full 30 hours if your working. Some people only get 15 hours some get 18 hours it completely depends on if you work and how much you earn :) x

All this overwhelms me. Im due my first in Feb 2022. Already stressing about this as i have to return to my job for a minimum 3 months so i dont end up with a big bill to repay for nhs mat allowance. My partner has gone back to college so already losing money. But long term we are going to be better on benefits instead of me working, because we cannot afford childcare AND bills with our earnings. And we have a mortgage as well so our entitlement will be limited! I would be only be working to pay childcare basically 🙄
Great video! Just to mention that the 30 hours can be spread across the year (approx 22 hours a week) which helps make the monthly payments the same rather than the holidays costing more. If you also have an older child in school then you have to remember that term time you’ll have before and after school clubs and during holidays you’ll have clubs so the monthly amount will differ from term time to holidays. They really don’t warn you about childcare costs 😂

I see that you wear glasses. That's of interest to me because I was an optician for many years before I retired to spend more time playing golf. It's really not surprising to see you wearing glasses because as of 2018 a recent university study found that 74% of the population now either wears glasses or contacts and of that 74% the majority was women between the ages of 18 and 35. The reason seems to be more women in that age group are doing some type of clerical work and a good deal of computer work which is resulting in their need for vision correction. Do you mind me asking if you're longsighted or shortsighted? Glasses are really a nice look on you but as an optician I would prefer seeing you wearing something a bit smaller than theses glasses. But if you like them that's more important than what i think anyway. I do like the frame is a nice thin wireframe so it doesn't hide or cover much of your face. I always hate to see an attractive young woman, like yourself, wearing a big bold black plastic frame that totally takes away from her stunning looks.
People should only have the number of children they can afford. It is perfectly possible to have a long healthy and happy life without having children.

So reasonable! In my area (South London) all the nurseries are around £70 a day until they are 2 when it gets cheaper.

Yes, we used to live in Essex and then Hampshire and would have been a lot more expensive there! Luckily we’re further north now xxx

Hey - that was for 30 hours free childcare (not tax free childcare) the two are separate. So confusing isn’t it!!

I see that you wear glasses. That's of interest to me because I was an optician for many years before I retired to spend more time playing golf. It's really not surprising to see you wearing glasses because as of 2018 a recent university study found that 74% of the population now either wears glasses or contacts and of that 74% the majority was women between the ages of 18 and 35. The reason seems to be more women in that age group are doing some type of clerical work and a good deal of computer work which is resulting in their need for vision correction. Do you mind me asking if you're longsighted or shortsighted? Glasses are really a nice look on you but as an optician I would prefer seeing you wearing something a bit smaller than theses glasses. But if you like them that's more important than what i think anyway. I do like the frame is a nice thin wireframe so it doesn't hide or cover much of your face. I always hate to see an attractive young woman, like yourself, wearing a big bold black plastic frame that totally takes away from her stunning looks.
I would never send my kids to any childcare. I changed my shift when I had kids. That way my wife and I could work and not have anyone watch our kids.
People should only have the number of children they can afford. It is perfectly possible to have a long healthy and happy life without having children.
You could look after your own children like a mother should...

We had no help when the navy wages was very low now I am a pensioner why should the tax payer pay for child if you can’t afford then don’t have.
