  • Before the 1970s rape was used to control and undermine women. During the time of slavery, African American enslaved women were legally allowed to be raped by white men. Even after slavery ended, sexual violence was a tactic used to keep the African American population from gaining civil rights or political power.
Once the Civil War ended and slaves were freed with the right to vote and own land society began to be particularly violent. Mobs burned churches, raped Black women, and much more. Following this in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan raped, lynched, and oppressed the Black communities.
During the Memphis Riot of 1866, a group of African American women testified in front of Congress, ultimately breaking the silence regarding rape.
In the early 1970s the Rape Crisis Movement was conceptualized and promoted by women focused on the experiences of rape victims. Leftist activists and members of counter-culture were among the first to join the movement. Early goals of the movement included disrupting and changing social norms that promoted the oppression of women and violence against them and the creation of a support network that engendered fear and blame free environments where women were safe to join a process of self and mutual aid.
In 1974 the Federal Government granted funding to Pittsburg Action Against Rape. this was the first time the Federal Government provided financial aid to a rape center. By the late 1970s the United States had over 1,000 rape crises centers in operation. During the same period of time the ideology of the movement shifted. Prior to 1974 most member movements self identified as radical feminist. By the end of the 1970s most members and crisis support staff self identified as liberal reformists. The movement began to become increasingly professionalized in the early 1980s, focusing on organizational structure, staffing, funding and legislation

The news back than was much more raw and it wasn't censored so much. If news was like this today it would be better bc it wld show the rawness in it's stories it wldnt be sugar coated. The news it's lacking today is realness it's so rehearsed and just seems fake as far as the delivery, I am not speaking about the stories. Censoring came into play bc whyte ppl were offended by what was being said, what was being done ect, they were offended by everything and it sucked the life out of certain things that were meant to remain raw, uncut. The brutal honesty of the horrible things that occur makes ppl aware. I just believe some things shld not be sugar coated and shld be shown in the raw.

Man I was born in '89 and I forgot just how bad Victim Blaming and "saying the women wanted it" or painting the woman as a bad or less than person. And it's CRAZY how often they gave (not guilty) sentences. And it's disgusting. These victims were put through hell and then to be torn apart like trash in trial when it's supposed to be "Justice". Nothing matters about the victims life other then , do they consent or do they not consent? They obviously DO NOT CONSENT!

I'm 49 and I remember the late 70's early 80's and correct me if I'm wrong - but it seems to me the 50's 60's and especially the 70's there were more middle aged to older men driving around in green sedans asking little boys and girls if they wanted some candy !! Thankfully you can't get away with that anymore !! That's one good thing about today then back then. My causin has been missing since 1981 and nobody knows what happened to him. If that happened today I am sure the perpetrator who kidnapped and murdered my causin would have been caught. All I know when I think of the 70's I just envision there being voyeurism and peeping toms all over and neighborhood pervs you were told to stay away from. Not to mention I'm Catholic and the Catholic church back then. I do love the 70's and I love this station
