The Taipan is a manually operated pump action rifle chambered in 223. It is made in Australia and it is around half the price of the Warwick, Oceania Precision and Wedgetail Industries AR style rifles. Unfortunately I only had a few mags of smooth running as I had numerous metal shavings caught inside the bolt which caused failure to fires. Even after disassembly, cleaning thoroughly, the rifle still had major issues with sticking after a shot was fired. I tried various factory ammo from Federal, OSA, Hornady and Outback Ammo, but best results was achieved with the 62gr Federal Premium load coming in at 0.8" for 3-shots @ 100 yards.
The Victor Precision 2-stage trigger for the Taipan rifle is a pleasure to use breaking at just over 2lbs and allowing you to take a more precise shot or quick shots when required. This is not a bench rifle and in my view should be able to easily sustain fast followup shots as this is commonly required when hunting mobs of feral pigs. When it cycles without sticking, I found it to be smoother than the Remington 7615 but I'm hoping that newer versions of this rifle do not have the issues I encountered.

I honestly hope that SCSA take all this feedback onboard and correct the issues as there is definitely a significant market here in Australia for what they are trying to achieve. I will follow the progress of the Taipan with great interest.
They have now been in touch and have most issues sorted I’m told, so I’d be happy to do a follow up review on one of the latest batches
I have just purchased one. Serial 16XX. I can confirm that the bolt catch has an improvement in respect of the receiver being notched out to allow it to move without interference, in turn this should sort the scratching on the cerakote. I have not fired the gun yet, so not sure on the sticking action and cam lug burring the receiver. Looking forward to getting out and testing it.

@grantmcdonald5325 hi Grant. Yes, I have had a shoot of it. I have only run 54 rounds of winchester 55grain target FMJ through it. So, there's not much I can really say at the moment. However, for first thoughts, cycled really nice, no stoppages, cerakote is still rubbish. There are a few marks from round ejections. Pulled it down to see the wear in the receiver, minimal wear, but I can tell, it may overtime get worse. Like Fhuck states, aluminium has the consistency of chewing gum. Overall, I quite liked it. Once I sighted the scope in, it is pretty accurate.
@@gavs_adventures thanks for the reply, tossing up seeing if the mpr308 gets through NSW shit house registry. If it doesn’t might wait until they bring out the taipan in 300blk and hopefully they make any needed adjustments then.
Guns are one of the few things I expect to be perfect.
I know that there will always be some issues here and there with firearms but honestly, the amount of people who have reported issues with their Taipans after 300 rounds just doesn’t make sense when the manual says it’s been torture tested to 8000 rounds 🤷🏼♂️

Hopefully they can stay in business and bring out improved models. I don’t reckon I’ll be doing a like for like on my Remington any time soon, but I’ll definitely keep an eye on them.

Me and my mate the other day put about 500 rounds through his Taipan with no issues with jamming or getting stuck in battery. We were using Winchester white box 55gr. The internals look perfectly fine too, no damage/burrs in the camming track or on the rails or anything. SN is in the 1000's.
Another thing is that new batches of Taipans do indeed have new handguards with MLOK slots on the diagonal sides instead of the diamond shaped cutouts.

a lot of that metal was primer blow out, you can see the smoke on some of the video, check your brass, buffalo river have soft primers
AUSSIE MADE JUNK! GLAD I KEPT MY 7615, IT NEVER HAS MISSED A BEAT AND GETS GOOD ENOUGH HUNTING ACCURACY. I KNOW SEVERAL SHOOTERS THAT BOUGHT THE TAIPAN, AND REGRET IT AND RETURNED IT FOR A REFUND.
Sad truth is that my Remington 7615 never missed a beat unlike the issues I’ve had with the taipan and the Oceania rifle.

I know you can only review the rifle you get, that is fair. But a big difference that I see between the Taipan and the Oceania is the number of people complaining about faults. I'm in contact with many owners of many straight pull and pump style rifles, and the only Oceania I've heard fail (me personally heard that is, not a spectacular sample size but it is something) was the one you reviewed. Not an accusation, just an observation. The number of Taipan rifles however that are being talked about as faulty by the people who bought them, that is a significant number that surprised me. I'd still buy an SP-15 (if I could afford it;) but I won't be buying a Taipan any time soon. Which is sad as on paper at least they looked great: (

Mate I'll tell you what my biggest disappointment with this rifle is. It's the lack of proactive distribution of information from SCSA to the people who are supporting their business by purchasing this rifle. It's a new pump -action rifle in Australia, and it will take a bit of time to iron out the issues. We are all essentially the beta testers for this rifle, which is fine, as long as the support from SCSA acknowledges this, which they don't seem to be doing.
I have one the first rifles, and my cam bolt snapped after 38 rounds. In addition, I have major damage to the cam pin guide in the upper receiver also. This only happened a couple of weeks ago. I then find out that they knew about these issues, but I have never seen an announcement or been contacted by them in order to rectify these issues (as simple as a replacement cam bolt in some cases). I had to cancel a shooting trip for an issue they knew about but have not been vocal over, and which could have have potentially resolved the issue months ago. And to add, I still have not had a reply from them to resolve my situation apart from the 'we will be in touch' a week ago now.
The other pet-peeve is the cleaning issue which you mentioned. The rifle has to be dis-assembled for cleaning and inspection. One pg. 9 of the manual, it says "make sure you understand how to assemble, operate, disassemble" the rifle. It also says "any time you disassemble or reassemble the rifle...you should conduct a functional check", which they say is discussed on pg. 14. You then go to pg. 14 and it says don't disassemble the rifle unless you're a gunsmith. Then on pg. 15 it says the rifle has to cleaned after use. It's so confusing! Instead of treating gun enthusiasts like whitegoods purchasers, they should have just included a guide on disassembly and assembly, which is clearly needed. You literally can not clean or inspect the bolt/carrier without disassembly. I was gobsmacked when I received the rifle and there was no guide on disassembly/assembly.
This rifle as the potential to be a great, well priced Australian rifle.But with the lack of proactive info or support from SCSA it will be a tough road for them.
You've hit the nail on the head. Manage customer expectations if you don't want them to be pissed.
I'm glad you shared that to us shooters, reviews from Ozzie and yourself really does open up the bigger picture of what we have to deal with regarding spending so much friggin money for 4/10 performance.

Totally agree mate, I have one as well, they are nothing fancy but they do the job and are more accurate than this rifle and totally reliable.
Love the Remington. The fit and finish on mine was a bit how-do-you-do and I’ve had some feed issues with it when it’s eaten a little too much outback dust for the day, but it’s pro’s far and away out weigh any cons.

I've put over 1300 rounds through mine and have had no issues so far. I'm using cheap Winchester 55g bthp and am getting excellent grouping at 100m and easily hitting targets up to 300m. I'm using a holosun h503g paired up with a holosun 3x magnifer.
Thank you for this very well presented review. You are one of the best presenters for firearms on UA-cam……. One thing to note “ammo” related. I’m having more consistent results with federal ammo across all my calibre’s I shoot.

Got one the other day. They have made improvements to the receiver frame where the bolt catch was wearing the cerakote. They have recessed it out now. Serial 16XX
I just picked my one up on Friday. Kinda wish I seen this video first now.. my stock was very loose straight out of the box. Will comment again if I find any issues at the farm next weekend. Hopefully I have got one with the issues sorted.

The cam pin is actuated by the bolt carrier moving rearward in relation to the bolt, facilitating the "unlock" phase of the cycle, not by interacting with the receiver. The slot in the receiver is for clearance for the cam pin, and needs a little more clearance at the rear where it is currently making contact, by the look of that.
I had a pre production model on loan from my local gunshop & put 500 rounds through it with no issues apart from 2 dodgy reloads that wouldn't chamber. It was smooth & had a good trigger, it was impressive.
However when the production models started to roll in I was less than impressed & have been disappointed with the cam pin issues and other things such as you have experienced.
Lots of Ipsc rifle shooters are buying them & they will see plenty of rounds hopefully the issues will be resolved.

My 7615 hasn't given me any issues what so ever since new n it's run thousands of rounds, zero malfunctions. I'll stick with it.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the supreme overlords would just let us have ar15 s so we didn’t have to settle for the makeshift garbage we have access to. Even if we could import some of the straight pull options from the US would be nice

I think it’s still a great Aussie made rifle and improvements will be made along the way as it progresses. No other Aussie made pump option is available for NSW with the other brands so it’s going to be the choice in the home state.
I think a lot of people complaining don’t realise how hard and expensive it is to develop these items especially being literally made right here at home other than the barrel. Looking forward to seeing their updated edition where things are smoother over.
I agree but the bottom line is a rifle for $2000 must work and function without hiccups regardless of where it’s made. I’m certainly hoping their latest batch have addressed the issues as the concept is good but as I said it must function, the time for hiccups is in R&D phase, not commercial production in my view.

Annnd what are they going to do about those folk who bought early ones?? Having demonstrable manufacturing defects is pretty much a hole in one for consumer law claims as far as I can tell. Being told to send back for warranty repairs for shit that was broken at the design stage isn't right

@@ozziereviews went out today. Put around 130 rounds down range. Various ammo from cheap frontier 55 grain,ADI green tip and buffalo river, Hornady TAP, Australian Outback Ammo and Winchester FMJ. Sighting in the red dot everything ran perfectly. Cycling was smooth and clean. The minute I went to firing rapid shots it started the same issue you came across. 5 rounds in and the pump would stick. I found if you fire and wait for around 5 seconds it would be fine but as soon as it warmed up and I went back to rapid the pump would stick every time. So frustrating for a $2,000 firearm. I am going to call the gun shop I purchased from tomorrow and see what can be done. I will let you know the outcome if you’re interested?

I think I will just stick to a good ole Ruger American ranch .223 for around $800au give or take. The metal floating around on take down is ringing some alarm bells.
Its a shame you received a dud. 2 of my friends have dudish Tiapans and needed chamber polishing but mine is a pissa. Being Australian made is fantastic but the quality and consistency needs some improvement. Thanks for your review

It’s just the disappointment that I have when any rifle doesn’t work, as I’m not reviewing prototypes here, I’m reviewing production firearms that any of you could have purchased with your hard earnt money.
Is it me or have a number of Aussie made rifles come out of the gates with some serious issues? I’m a huge advocate for buying ‘Australian Made’ but it’s a tough sell when there seems to be serious flaws…… I think I’ll stick to Euro or American made.
A .350 Legend would be neat to see also.
I haven't had any issues with mine jamming yet, although I've only put maybe 150-200 rounds through it. I noticed you covered the serial number Ozzie, so I can't tell if mine's a later one than your example, I hope it is though, with some of the kinks ironed out.
I honestly hope they do iron the issues out, serial was in the 400s, what was yours?
So what/where did the metal shavings come from? It has to be a very good & durable tool for some to replace their lever action on pigs...
Like to see how it went with similar test with the ammuniton it likes but those shavings are quite a concern regardless how good it runs & I guess its got close to pump action hunting accuracy, would think 2MOA or better would be ok.

This rifle is now on sale on most gun stores in Australia now, which means a Taipan 2.0 is coming out which would be more reliable
I know a few people that have this rifle and returned it.
The sample at my local shop jammed shut in battery on empty chamber. I couldn't unstick it. Staff said opps, and retired it to the back for fixing. Definitely not for me.

@@ozziereviews were those metal shavings from the gun or from the brass casings? Either way, there's some rough bits inside causing the sticking.
Good tip on the gen 3 Pmags Oz. Other pmags won’t even work in the Taipan?
if you can cycle a round into the chamber, but it won't easily eject, it can't be the ammunitions fault in any way? did it jam on whatever you put into it once hot? really like how you are straight up about it all. the need for a trigger upgrade is a bit disappointing too. would love to see Australian manufacturing happen in a large scale again in all areas of products. but it has to be on par with what's available.
Would be great to see an Australian manufactured 20" barrel, the 16" is to noisy, the WYLDE chamber and 1-7" a great choice, as would 300 black out.

At the 25.10 minute point, you show a number of bright pieces of metal, that came out of the rifles action, when you dismintled it. Where did these pieces of metal come from? The 'metal shavings' at 25:15, where did shavings originate from, ammo or rifle?
Since the review I’m told there was problems with the firing pin tip and tolerance of the hole on the bolt face. It’s a shame as the rifle concept is great but it has to work under normal circumstances. Perhaps the latest batch of them will be better…
@@ozziereviews ... so, I'm guessing the 'metal shavings' are bits of primers working into the chamber and binding up the action ... should be an easy fix by changing over the firing pin ... probably a standard AR15 type firing pin should work ... if you still have the firearm I can ship you one.
Great presentation. A pump AR ,is that what Aussie gun laws allow ? Back in the '60s Remington made a full size pump .223 that was a tack driver. Sadly it did not catch on with the buying public.

Mine runs beautifully, no malfunctions and cycling is easy, will break it down after 300 but I'm expecting it to be fine. Criticism on this one might be a touch over done here.

As soon as whom can get pumps back? Centrefire pump actions are category B in all Australian states and territories. Category B is easily available, so I don’t understand who this “we” you mention is?
honestly i think most semi auto rifles would have rounds stick if they had to be manually cycled. but the more strong forceful ejection in semi-auto ejects the hot brass better

Hey mate. good to see ya doing well now days. I bought one of these because the price came down. I knew all the negativity form reviewers and also watched some more positive reviews. mine has been very good. only problem is some ammo ( frontier ) will not fire even with a good primer strike.
I have have pulled mine down to clean and have no signs of damage.
The trigger is very heavy and i think the victor trigger will be a good upgrade. I have found it shoots tighter groups with 69+ grn ammo.
No jams no cycle issues.
Was the rifle you had for testing a production rifle or was it provided from SCSA for R/D of victor trigger?

Seemed to run better using the pmag gen 3 over the stock mag.
Why do you need a degree in mechanical engineering just to clean this thing? Pump action ARs arent exactly ground breaking. Surely we can figure out something more efficient.

They can't give these things away now, if you look online they are going for only $1495. Dealers don't want them. There is more than one review with the same issues, some reviews are from those who brought them for personal use. Hopefully all fixed now.

Was the rifle from a trigger supplier and a prototype and not a shootable rifle ?? I want to buy one of these and need an honest opinion ???
Just wondering if their folding stock adapter reduces the OAL to below 750mm and if so what's the legalities of this in Victoria, is it ok?

@@stihl888 Yep I stand corrected, just checked it up. Could be an OAL issue with the Taipan’s 16.5 inch barrel. It’d pay to get the length from SCSA on the muzzle to back of the receiver.
Based on your review - i wouldn't buy one. Too many issues for a new rifle.
So let me take stock at 6:24 into the video.
1. The Ceracote has marks from brand new? WTF
2. I have to fit a new trigger because the factory one is horrendous? WTF
3. But the rifle groups are sort of OK.
I want to see Aussie made rifles but I am not buying crap for the sake of Australian made

I mean the real solution to the mag problem is a proper design of the rifle. It's not like the bolt stop/bolt release part is a particularly unknown quantity...! Further, it's so bizarre to see so many things missed on this rifle that are total known quantity in gun design: a bolt stop, steel reinforcements on wear locations, magazine release fence, tool-free takedown, tolerances/clearances to account for heating, correct + flared mag well geometry, casing deflector, useful handguard pattern, configurable pump grip, and so many more things. And it not "price"; the Yanks can sell a semi auto for 1/3rd price, the Turks can sell button release 223s for less, and Warwicks are almost double the price. The person who buys this gun wants the perfect gun, not a cheap gun. It's also no excuse to say "it's their first go at this". The AR pattern has been refined for almost 70 now!
I really wanted the idea of this rifle; my Warwick is lovely but the FABA just doesn't quite hit the spot plus it really should have an in battery lock, the MPR isn't , and my 7600 is the smooth action I've ever touched (don't even defend this design, it's shite). I was totally happy to sell the WFA to buy a proper, fully integrated pump 223, so it's sad to see this hasn't hit the mark. At this point it seems I would probably have more luck just making my own company and designing it myself!
dam you wouldnt recommend the Wfa1? i bought a taipan to replace my old reliable 7615 but the taipan has been nothing but pain. so thought i would buy a wfa1 with a faba kit but wasnt sure about it due to the bolt not locking
@@Wint910 no, I absolutely would recommend the wfa-1. It's an absolutely exceptional rifle, but it is missing an in battery lock and the pump action is a inelegant add on.
So i guess its a 'no' for buying.
GUESS? BUY A BOLT GUN, A LEVER ACTION, OR BUY A 7615, AVOID THIS THING LIKE A DRUNK SHAZZA ON HEAT!
Buy a Warwick if they are allowed in your state or hold off and hopfully scsa will adress the issues in future rifles, they are almost there , if they can iron out the issues these will be ok
Id buy one in a heartbeat if not for so many issues , why do they release these rifles without proper testing to fix the niggles?
on sale for $1499 at the moment , happy to support aussie made but cant spend 1500 on a rifle that will cause so many headaches

Are these a restricted item in Ozzie? I bought the Troy .223 Pump here in NZ after the semi ban, got 200 rounds through it then it was banned too. Ffs!
Pump rifles are availablehere on our standard A/B licence for sport/recreational shooters, same as bolt or lever action. Semis only for primary producers and pest controllers on C/D licences.
Standard category B over here on a hunting/sports shooting genuine reason. They banned semi and pump rifles over in NZ but I’m pretty sure you guys can get permission for straight pulls if you shoot IPSC rifle.
