- When you need to replace the strut and bearing plate it is less expensive to change the whole assembly.Come along as I show you how to replace the struts. In this video I will be replacing the front strut assembly.
Here are some of the tools that jimthecarguy uses

This guy's videos are very helpful. I will however say that he makes it look much easier than it really is. My recent experience with the upper and lower bolts on the stabilizer bars required a handheld grinder to get those bolts off...even with a 18mm wrench, breaker bar, impact wrench...those bolts were NOT coming off. Without this video tho I wouldn't have had the confidence to even try this repair on my own
Thanks Jim, I have just replaced my front left strut assembly and the only difficulty was getting the nut off the sway bar I only have basic tools however having watched your excellent video I persevered and got the job done. Attempting the right in the morning wish me luck😂
Glad it helped
Dude I swear you always nail every single point. Your videos are incredible. Thank you
I appreciate that!
Great video! Definitely I'm going to try to replace my front strut assembly on my 2009 Chevy Cobalt for the first time. Once again great superb explanatory video down to detail. Keep making more videos whenever you can Jim The Car Guy!
Very well done & explained. Very nice camera work also. Happy to subscribe. I always have trouble after removing the strut nuts & hitting the bolts partially out, getting the rest of the bolt out. Even the last job with the point on my air hammer, I had trouble getting 1 bolt all the way out. Figures yours came right out. That's why you are a pro my friend. Thanks for making the video.
Thanks man! This video saved me over $1000 by doing the struts myself.
First thing everyone should know, especially if you get a strut to swap your coil springs over is to make sure you get all parts such as bellows, upper and lower insulators(just in case they're torn), strut mounts, and all tools needed. I didn't get the insulators or bellows and now I'm waiting a day with my cobalt up on a jack stand lol.
Anyway, This Video did help a lot, but the only issue I had, and what isn't shown was loosening up the top nut of the strut to switch the spring over to the new strut. Since my car had lowering springs it wasn't a problem compressing them, but I did have to use vice grips on the piston part while loosening the nut since it continually spun.
All in all a very well done job Jim and you get a like from me 👍
For anybody reading this, DON'T loosen to top nut to switch springs, get the full assembly. Do be this guy up there.
@@rolfbjorn9937 It's a lot easier getting a complete strut assembly, but if you need to swap springs from strut to strut then you'll have to rent a spring compressor. If you do it right and safe then loosening the nut isn't an issue.
Great video. Love the subtle tips like leaving the nuts on while tapping out the bolts, as well as supporting the bolts so you don't strip the splines. Good stuff!
Bill Henderson Glad to help, thanks for watching.
Always always a great and informative video. Jim - my favorite UA-cam mechanic. Thanks for the knowledge.👍👍
Thanks Jimmy! I appreciate your wisdom and knowledge sir!
Great video man you made this seem very easy to do, I have a 2008 cobalt if I’m able to change my alternator by myself I’m sure I can do this also.
Great video. All the best car books are in english and sometimes not being familiar with the terms confused me. Seeing you do it is way better. Keep up the good work. Thank you so much.
I'm happy to help thanks for watching.
Thank you for the great information. Very helpful and awesome tips!! Both my Dodge Rams just have standard shocks, easy enough, but this will be my first attempt at replacing struts. This video will really come in handy!!

Thanks for the share. Awesome video. I'm also about to do a strut and shock install on a 2006 Chevy cobalt ls. What were those torque specs for it all again?
Thanks for watching.
48 lbft for sway bar link. 89 lbft for Strut nuts, upper and lower. 15 lbft for Strut top plate NUTS under hood.
Perfect video
Great video thanks
I removed all the the nuts, three on top, one on stabilizer link and two on controller arm and entire strut assemble won't drop out. I was thinking of hammering it down, but haven't done it, worried I'm missing something here. Any suggestions?
Found that the 18mm wrench in n back part of stabilizer link is actually smaller…appears 16mm
Awesome video. Great job.
Thanks for the visit
Hey brother, after you finished to install the front struts, does the car has be taken to do on alignment?
I have this job coming up on my 2005 Dodge Magnum so I paid attention. :)
I'm sure you will have no problem
Great show Jim my friend always tells me that's a big job lol
It could be expensive if it were done in a shop but if you can do it yourself it is a lot less expensive. Thanks for watching

Hey Jim great video just out of curiosity do you have to get an alignment after changing the struts I have an 2010 Cobalt and I'm going to change struts myself but I wasn't sure if I need an alignment or not. And I will take your advice and by the quickest sturts looks so much easier.
Hi Jim, D.J. here.. I have a 07 Pontiac G5 & I hit a massive pothole while traveling on the interstate while I was out of town & I was surprised that I did not have a blow out! I am considering what struts to order because, My suspension is not right ever since that massive hole! I replaced the front control arms a few months ago & all 4 rims & tire's to eliminate a shimee & all was good until I hit that monstrous hole! I have ordered quick struts in the past & was not impressed! I am not made of money but, I do want a strut that will last! I am shopping threw Rockauto.com & the struts they offer for a G5 are- Fcs, Gabriel, Monroe, Moog, Kyb, & AC Delco at least within the "daily driver" selection! I was considering the Gabriel's or the Monroe's due to cost! The Gabriel is the second cheapest @ $87.89, & the Monroe is the 3rd cheapest @ $89.79. Do you think that I will be okay with the Gabriel or the Monroe? Keep in mind that, I am also replacing the inner & outer tie rods & the sway bar links all at the same time because, I can never seem to remove the sway bar links due to them either being overtightened or seizing up so, i want to be prepared & to replace the entire front suspension!!!
You can't go wrong with AC Delco or Monroe.
Thanks Jim...this is a great "how-to" video. Having the complete strut assembly would save the trouble of buying a strut mount/bearing, right? I mean, the upper mount/bearing is included in that assembly, correct? Thereby saving quite a bit of money since I've seen the upper mounts pretty pricey. Thanks Jim.
Thanks. Can you tell me the company or parts you used to replace?
Thankyou
What've done is mark the car and stud to where it goes in the top
I have a question when replacing the shock absorbers you have to press them with the special tool
Yes you need a press to switch over the springs. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
No alignment check (camber) necessary ??
Camber on these Struts is 0 degrees.
Nice work.
Thank you
this video been very helpful and excellent work where is your shop located
Great video!
damkayaker Appreciate the comment, thanks for watching my video!
Great job
Quick struts are shit. How long did it last? How bad was the ride after? I would rather go Oem and keep the same spring.
thanks very easy
great tips
I'm happy to help. Thank you for watching
Hey Jim! Did you happen to have a link of where you got the parts for this job? Thanks!
Sorry I bought it from my local auto parts store. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
Isn't there a bushing that is advised to be replaced when doing this?
You must be referring to the SWAY BAR BUSHINGS.
Yes, these BUSHINGS need to be replaced. When you pull out the old bushings, you will obviously see why. They get torn and start to make your steering loosey goosey.
Thanks .
What is foot pound I don’t get it and how do you do that or do you just tighten it
Buy or borrow a Torque Bar such as a 1/2 " torque bar and ask the Parts guy to show you where 48 lbft is located and how to change it to 89 lbft, (usually you can round off the torque bar tool to 50 lbft or 90 lbft).
Good job
Thanks for watching
Bad boy..
Are these specs the same on a 07 cobalt Ls?
yes. Similar specs which will fine.
Do you need to do a front end alignment on this 2006 Chevy Cobalt
Pete Miller Whenever you do front end work, it's always a good idea to check the alignment.
Thankx Jim
what is the cost the whole assy vs the individual parts?
Richard Cowtails Prices vary through out the country, so I really couldn't estimate it.
Do mechanics hate it when people bring their own parts in and ask for them to be installed? I've always wondered if they lose money that way or they don't mind..
That is a good question. Myself I will install the customers parts but I make sure that they know if I take the car apart and the parts are the wrong ones I will order the correct parts so I can get the car out of the shop. Oh and there is not warrantee at all.
@@jimthecarguy thank you for the honest response.
Who makes that strut? What's a really good one?
AC Delco or Monroe.
Hey Jim, what brand of penetrating spray do you use ? Thanks Buddy.
I have a a few WD 40,Nut buster and TMC but the nut buster work best
Thanks.
Thank you for stopping by the shop
Seems there's a few company's that make a penetrating spray called "Nut Buster". If you can Jim, can you give me the name of the company that makes yours ? I'd like to buy the one you recommend.
Cool
Thank you for stopping by the shop
Is an alignment needed after changing struts?
It is always a good idea to check it after any front end work.Good question
Why does the tire rub on the spring bracket after replacement of struts
@@larrywiley597 that cant be good!!!
Wow what is all the noise .very hard to here what you are talking about
