Matt, check out Permatex Coppercoat 80697. It makes a nicer gasket sealant and will release when you disassemble. Plus it is often used on head gaskets by drag racers. Quality product!

Your continued work on this is amazing to me. You just work at your pace and you bring us along with you. Your commenting as you go and your great editing is great as well. It has led to a very watchable series on a great dozer.
Sounds kinda fanciful and almost sentimental but I see these little machines as being the builder of a lot of the infrastructure in this country. Great to see this one being cared for. Looking forward to seeing it working for you on your property. Thanks again.

Congratulations on one helluva successful journey! Not only your restoration process, but also your video expertise documenting it on UA-cam. Been messing with old Cats most of my 75 years, and have RARELY seen brake pedal pads with as much high-hour wear as your D4! Meaning you resurrected an extremely worn-out challenge. Thanks for sharing.

Your fabrication and layout skills are methodical and logical. It's like watching machine design and fabrication all at once. I don't comment on every sort of video like this, but really enjoy your talking it through, fabricating, testing, and re-fabricating if needed. Enjoy your humor when it happens. I don't know what you do for a living, but you certainly have the Engineering & Fabrication Department down. You are readily capable and many companies would be lucky to have your brain, skills, and time. Truly enjoy even watching you tap or paint something. Wrenching on bent up old iron is always a fight. Otherwise we wouldn't do it LOL! Just about there Matt, and glad that head gasket decided to cooperate.

I love the videos. I rebuilt and used a D47U to clear the property I live on now. I didn't do near as much work as you did, but she was a solid, smooth running girl with a working pony engine. She's gone now, and I miss her. Just a reminder, as long as you keep the face of the wrench at a 90 degree angle to the fastener, extensions don't change the torque value.
A worthy point on torque values and extensions. This belief must be spawned from electric rattle guns as the hammer effect is diminished by each loose connection
Aviation seal is a wonder product,We use it alot when working on older iron,fills voads and sticks gaskets in place. Glad to see how far you have come .
Absolutely love this shit! Among rebuilding a D4 Cat, I'm vicariously rebuilding a 100-year-old sailboat, I restore all sorts of old things, I'm a machinist in Australia and a crafty woodworker in England. Me and my dad build cabins in Canada, another father and I have a 250-year-old French farmhouse where we've replaced the roof, a staircase and workshop floor. Don't even get me started on the ocean crossings I've done, visited all the old Soviet Republics, looking for murals, etc. You should see all the old tractors I've recovered and shit I've fixed way up in the mountains somewhere in New Zealand! Another buddy and me have fixed up a couple of old Land Rovers, New Zealand or Australia, I'm not sure which. THANK YOU, Pacific Northwest Hillbilly, for making it possible to go with you on this crazy-ass journey, one which I would never have considered nor imagined! I've laughed, cried, celebrated and lost my temper countless times, right from the comfort of my living room chair!
I can't conceive of any possibility that I would ever own a D4, but I am thoroughly enjoying your videos.

Glad you found your 9/16th’s, this project is awesome, if it was easy everyone would have one, taking time and doing it right is the key and it might be the right time to run over it with a adjustable spanner and tighten everything up before fitting all the outside covers. Loving every episode 👍

U got very lucky!! When i was young, my dad took off the cylinder head of our d4d. I drope a push road trough the block into the oil pan! 😂😂 we had to take off the oil pan, he was very happy haha
Looks like that hydraulic lever on the front could be flipped over, then the push/pull rod would be level.

So good, and you do not cut corners. The front guard is a perfect example how you are a stickler and boxed in the underside, I thought you were just going to put some L bracket along the front.
Matt you are excellent in filming real life in the rebuilding of your dozer. You have a great sense of humor also. Welding outside in the snow reminded me of the phrase " It's colder than a well digger's ass in Alaska". I am glad you are in the northwest, here in Texas there's nothing to stop the north wind except for barbed wire. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video, I enjoyed it thoroughly and have learned a lot from watching you figure out and work through problems. Missed seeing Charley hope is warm and safe.
Matt, please use Tap Magic when using taps. Also tap, then back off a little bit to get rid of the chips. From an old machinist and hot rod builder

Thank you for sharing this project. It's different -- and great -- to see how someone who is careful and meticulous rebuilds an old machine to be a runner and not a "perfect restoration showpiece."

Matt, you've done some very elegant work and some deep research to get the right parts and pieces to make the tractor much more usable.

Just happened to be driving thru Gaston today and I think I spotted where you bought your new/used Cat engine. I was so excited I had to point it out to the Wife and grandkids. Started checking out all people on the street looking for you but finally realized you were probably home working on your Cat. You do great work and have amazing patience. Love every episode! Back in the day we had a paste liquid, we call mustard that we put on the steal head gaskets for sealing them! Do not remember why we quit using it, think they quit making it, but it sure sealed them head gaskets!
Matt, you are good at fabricating from the point of design thru construction. I believe you deserve tremendous credit for toughing out weather elements and making steady progress. 👍👍👍

But, with work and a family to take care of I can understand why it's been awile since we say a new one posted.
It definitely sucks to get it so close to pushing dirt the find the engine head has a fluid leak.
It's incredible how you keep coming up with modifications to make things work better than what you found.

If you use that sealer on only 1 side of the gasket you can usually reuse the gasket a couple times

I’ve been catching up on my UA-cam videos after five weeks in the hospital. It’s definitely much better watching your video on a TV over the IPhone.
There is definitely no serious problems getting oil to the top of the motor and few leaks just add character to the old dozer.

Matt, this may start an argument, but you don't need to worry about using an extension with a torque wrench. A fundamental law of physics states that 'For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction'. The torque wrench can not click at 150 ft/lbs of torque unless the bolt is exerting that much resistance, even if the extension wraps up a half of a turn, it's still 150 ft/lbs.
Now, if you are using Newton/Meters, all bets are off using any torque wrench and socket that isn't made in Germany! 🤣🤣🤣
Man ive watched all of your videos on this and i am seriously amazed by your patience, dedication, skill and mental strength to turn that heap of scrap iron into a pretty much fully rebuilt working machine again. What makes it even more amazing is that you did it all alone, with no heavy lifting equipment and mostly basic and cobbled together tools. I must admit when you were taking it apart, i doubted you ever getting it back together and functioning again but i was dead wrong. What youve achieved is incredible and a real credit to you.

You have earned a good many people, mine included in how much effort you put into this machine. Costs of travel, and then shipping makes it near impossible to justify going to Kansas where a fellow who runs a scrap yard has been sending old machines like this into a scrap place they destroy so much of our history. Adventures made from scratch is his channel name should it peak your curiosity. I can not fault you for not going to a "Sema" build as its a machine you intend to bury in rocks and mud... its a work horse, not a limo for our president... whom ever that just might really be. Congrats on this hard labor machine.... time wise should you of been paid for the time would go a long ways towards a newer machine... where is the soul in that?

In my opinion you don’t need to apologize for the work that your doing. Having done things like this myself I know it isn’t easy. I believe that your doing very good work that is difficult at best. Love your vids and tell the naysayers to shut up.
I really enjoyed this post. Found your fabrication build across the protection, operation as shield, control just really well done. And take particular note of what various repair, fitting modification that was of time and shop attention was past neglect. I think that from this attention, your operator station safety and ease of control to difficult job task, will be huge.
The engine as recorded to run,...sounded great. I'm betting your spring, summer jobs to acreage will be a lot more fun and productive with this machine. And where I have some great memories as my grandfather, with his hard hat and gloves was real to all weather dust, mud, and snow. His machines both yellow and red with diesel power. '

You're 100% right doing those little bits now. Once you're using it, it's far to easy to say "if it works, it works" and leave it at that. But once you're using it and you've done those little bits, you won't have that little nagging on the mind when you go to use it. 👌👌

Matt, excellent job. A quick trick on removing broken bolts. Since you already have a mig welder, simply weld a larger nut onto the broken bolt. Slip the larger nut over the broken bolt and fill the nut with weld making sure to fuse it to the broken stud or bolt.. This method has 2 benefits: Welding heats the broken stud and using a nut allows the use of a wrench or socket to remove the broken stud. It may take a couple of attempts but this method usually works. For bolts that broken below flush, more diligence is required but it is still possible.

I'm really enjoying these videos on the old dozer. I will give you a little tip, when welding thick steel and cast iron. Heat your pieces with your torch then weld, you don't want it to turn red but maybe in the 200 degree range.

FYI: I think they've proven a few times that extensions don't throw off torque wrenches, but do, in fact, reduce the power of an impact wrench.
Genio1981, you are correct. An accurate torque value can be achieved with an extension, the extension may twist but only until it no longer twists and transmits the force. If the tightening force exceeds the strength of the extension it will break.

I found some titanium ones for a lot of money- best line in video! Bolt & cotterpin equals Cat repair perfection. Love your persistence in getting everything right. The torque on pipe fittings needs to be rethought, it’s cast iron you are working with, if fluid is being contained Teflon tape is your buddy, if it is an inspection hole, tight enough to not vibrate out be good. All good so far, waiting patiently to see some stumps ravaged!😊
The clearness of the bottom will help get the crap out of the bottom better. On front guard.

I have had this torque wrench discussion many times so I will put it out there. A straight extension will have no effect on the torque wrench setting or the torque applied. However, I believe if you are not straight over the fastener you will create a lever which will change the torque. I am just picking the fly shit out of the pepper here. I love your build.
