Touching up old models is a great way of getting you mind in the right space like using a technique you’ve learned since you painted them or using a new colour you’ve acquired
I found trying out new techniques and colours helps. Gets a bit tedious paiting everything grimdark all the time, so it's good to try neon cyberpunk colours etc
I have just discovered a new category of miniature painter: First we had the Brush Brand Wars. Next we had the conflict of wet vs dry palette. Then we got the black vs white primer aggression. The zenithal accords. There were others, all well known. This video proves that there are others that we as a species hadn't considered before. Here we have the, what I consider to be a rarer breed: the paint brush wiped on the sleeve connisuer. I am one of the sane painters who keeps a piece of kitchen roll in front of myself, I contort into insane shapes to accommodate that piece of kitchen roll/paper. Truly a revelation!
i use my thumbnail instead of hand/sleve as a micropallete that is super close to my brush. also licking and sucking the cleaned brush to get the moisture level correct.
I agree taking a break is the only solution that works for me. I go through phases where every spare minute of free time I'll dedicate to a painting project then a few weeks later its all gone. Thats me right now, 2 models to go in the Dominion Kruleboyz and I've lost the motivation. I'll be back and the models arent going anywhere, eventually the OCD kicks in and the love of painting returns!
I suffered from the same thing many moons ago. i took an extended break a while back and then one day i decided to paint a model. My skills sucked but i enjoyed it. i went and visited my local store as i hadnt played 40k in a few iterations and went back to basics and played my first intro game in years. going back to the beginning really reminded me what it was i enjoyed about the hobby and ive spent the last few weeks painting up an unusual Necron army colour scheme and I'm actively looking for games in my area. enjoy the content so it will be sad to see you burn out and not pick it back up but take a while to remind you what it is that made the hobby for you. One thing hat really helped me is a dedicated place to paint that is either always set up or fast to set up. In my old home i always had to transform my working space to my hobby space, removing work related stuff, setting up paint material yadda yadda, that whole proess took 5-10 minutes and a lot of time i was "nah, i dont want to do all that to paint, im tired and i want to relax" later on i invested in some storage options for brushes, colors etc and setting up a painting table anywhere in the house was a matter of 2 minutes. this helped me A LOT to motivate myself painting after work.
When I'm feeling a bit burnt out I like to do terrain. Just slapping on base coats, washes and drybrushing with wild abandon. It's just a fun way to paint and on a big bit of terrain they come out looking great
This video really helped me with my burn out. Dug out a ruin terrain piece and finished it up today. Got me motivated enough to paint another ruin and a crater afterwards. 👍
Definitely changing up what you are painting help. I have been working on my Tyranids army and after painting 200+ models, I was feeling a burnout, so I changed up and went back to a squad of Reivers I never painted (only primed) and I got energized again. I also went back to detailing and basing some intercessors as well. When I was done, I was ready to go back and am in the process to finish the 30+ Tyranids I still have.

One of the biggest things I find helps with burnout is change. For a LONG time, all I painted was grimdark and a few years back hit some heavy burnout. But having moved at the time and no longer having a game shop easily accessible to play at, I decided to move away from 40K and look at some Solo games. I got Five Parsecs from Home and started up building and painting in a cyberpunk style. The bright colors and wild and massive variety of models really got me back in the flow of things. Since it's miniatures agnostic, I got to make whatever I wanted for the models, and really go crazy, either 3D printing or buying online any crazy thing that just looked cool. Then I got my hands on blacklight neon paint and holy crap. A WHOLE new animal. I had to figure out how the heck to even paint with the stuff and it really brought back the passion for painting again. Let me tell you, it's awesome to see a finished model, but it's SO much more awesome to see a finished model glow under a blacklight display like proper cyberpunk.
Thanks for this video, I'm still trying to pull myself out of a sculpting burnout that's lasted years, it's good to see that burnout is way more common than I thought and that walking away for a bit is not only the right thing to do, but the healthy thing too.
This is a great idea. I actually did something similar - magnetize some jump packs for my 1998 Death Company - that metal box didn't have them, so it was nice having a mini-project to just paint some black jump packs and put some magnets on them. It's not exactly relaxing, but it is like a "quick win" that takes only a fraction of the time and mental load that sometimes stops me from starting new things.
Loved this video! I always like to go for an “easy win” if I’m feeling burnt out, usually I’d go for picking a single model like a chaos cultist and just take that single model into completion to a good standard to get a feeling of accomplishment. But I never thought about revisiting old models to take them the extra step! I love that idea and that’s something I’m definitely going to be keeping in my back pocket for future hobby slumps!
HA! I thought I was the only one keeping a log of everything they painted over the year. I started doing it last year and barely got to around 400. I'm up to 609 so far this year, not counting terrain, and have a backlog of around 80 models left so far. I find it motivating to see just how much you have gotten done over the year. I am even keeping links to pictures to each of the models so I can reference it and see a timeline progression. Found it kind of fun to review the journey thus far.
It's all about habits. I try to put paint on a brush once a day. Task done. If i don't want to paint, i clean the brush and achieved my goal for the day. But more often than not it results in 1-2 hours of painting.

Something else you can do when burning out but wanting to paint - learn to paint scenic background drop sheets, This way you can get that oldhammer feel for photo's and display of your models.
Doing other things is important too! I draw and paint as my main hobby and as work (im an animator) i like to paint minis in my soare time as a form of relaxation. You dont have to constantly be on your hobby, watch a movie or show, read a book, take a walk outside or even a nap! Don’t feel like you have to do your hobby or it’ll become an unenjoyable chore!

The buying too much at once thing is definitely real. Had three very large boxes of Legion stuff show up all at once and don't even want to look at them after assembling two units. It's all the soft plastic mold line scrapping that just wears me down in a hurry. I know I shouldn't worry so much on the rank and file and just assemble them but I can't help it.
So far I have two projects at different stages. Being able to jump between them helps keep things fresh. That and it's easy to do the "boring" stuff like scraping, filling, cluing, while watching shows.

Hobbyist tip for the static grass... after applying it, gently tap off the access and gently blow on it. This way more of the grass will stand upright and wont look squashed on.
I build when I don't feel like painting, and I paint when I get tired of building. I haven't painted in a month, but I've gotten a lot built and primed, mostly because I rattle can prime and cold weather is approaching where I live, so I have a little time left before whatever I have primed is what I get to paint in the winter.
This has literally been me for the past week. I'm burned out and I think it has to do with starting commissions. Since than I haven't painted any of my models. And when I paint my own I feel guilty. Thanks for the vid. I appreciate the vid and your personality.

I'm personally struggling with my Deff Dread, I can't wait for it to be finished, but it feels like a slog because there's so much to do and I'm trying to figure out what colour scheme to do. I've also found that because this is my first army since I was a kid I don't exactly have models to touch up yet until I finish them all, but my skills have improved so much since I was 11 that I'm super proud of what I've done
Being a new 40k player creating a routine of various activities helps a lot. Some painting, building, base focus, or just watching tutorial vids. I also play SWTOR and MHRise, and watch anime and toku series, work helps too of course
I have to agree. Forcing to paint is bad idea. Doing something else: playing video games, reading, maybe even playing wargame. That last step especially can help with motivation. Even more when that local tournament is approaching. Lastly: pick up a project you know you won't finish. Single mini. Perhaps a 3d print of a video game character that you like. Slap on some paint and see where that leads you. Even better if character has simple desing. Like pokemon or something similar. Then you can just use basecoats and call it done... or add some shading... and blends... and OSL... aaaand you've just painted a mini!
I'm not too sure why this video popped up on YT for me, but I just quickly wanted to say: Burnout can happen in any situation - jobs, hobbies, relationships, you name it! It's good to take a break from time to time, take time for yourself, be it a day, a week or a month and return to your hobby when you feel like you're in a better place to continue it. Your method of dealing with burnout in your hobby seems like a healthy way to deal with it too though!
Your videos give me motivation to paint, really. Thank you so much. For more interest, I decided to paint each half of Skitarii Vanguard set in different fractions of Adeptus Mechanicus. In the future I will try to collect and paint all the factions of good guys, its cool!
Best cure for burnout I discovered...taking some few pieces, like the track units for a leman Russ...and completely kitbashing one of the many variants using nothing but plasticard. In my case? Currently working on a Collosus Bombard.
Jay, I have a suggestion that might make the gene stealers even creepier. If you paint the sculpted veins and / or freehand vein lines in dark "blood" color (ie: bluish claret for humans) and then, when it's dry, go over it with a thin coat of your flesh tone, it will add translucency to their skin. This could be turned up to an 11 for a kill team by using a portable blacklight and glow paint. One downside to building a mini army is that you pour your soul into completing a largely uniform collection that one can overlook tiny (literally tiny) details that can make the models truly pop.
I was burnt out a few weeks ago so I just stopped for a while. Came back and started painting an army of black templars and mid winter mini style sandstone necrons. Very happy with it. Maybe try paint a kill team if different coloured necrons. It’s what I do when I’m fed up with my main armies colour scheme for space marines at least. Or just take a break. We won’t mind lol
Good advice start with something almost finished get a kick out of finishing it get some motivation going. This is what my math teacher used to say solve one easy problem first just so you get into the mood and then you can tackle the harder problems too.
I’m kinda in the middle of a painting slump so I found a stranger things lego set I had in my closet that I never finished. So hopefully when I finish it I’ll feel like painting again
I use a very similar approach... I sorted my showcase in stages of completion. On top are the finished minis. Underneath that are the unfinished ones, that are above those that are just base coated... and on the bottom are finished conversions and WIPs. I found out that I paint much more often if I don't paint minis but motives. ie. today I feel the urge to paint some skin, I don't want to paint details on an ornate armor, just plain human skin. So I pick a bunch of those minis that show much of it paint for an hour or two and finished my task for the day. Most often I keep on finishing them and two hours become four or five. Painting is a part of this HOBBY, it shouldn't be a chore. If I really want to do something with my minis but I really don't want to paint, I take my bitzbox and my pile of shame and look for some inspiration. Most of my hobby projects start with a conversion idea, followed by some browsing through my existing bits and online for new minis. For me converting and planning of a conversion is the most fun. And with the enthusiasm I collected in converting a mini, I paint it straight away and use that energy to paint some unfinished minis with it. But admitted I don't play 40k anymore, because painting so many samey minis is really not my cup of tea. I once tried to paint a whole AM platoon... and what shall I say? Nope. Boring as hell. I need variety... at least that's the thing that helped me through many motivation holes. Not only in miniature gaming but in general.
I actually just got out of my burn out yesterday and know I'm going to continue panting my brother world eaters. But I didn't do anything to get me outta my burn out I just waited till go the motivation to do it again.my burn out started in July and I barley got motivated again yesterday.

I have only been Cleaning Mold Lines, Washing, Gluing and Priming Models, Vehicles and loads of Terrain for almost six months now... stowing all of it in padded boxes. But not painted any of it yet. My mind have passed beyond the darkest limits of boredom doing this. I go about it like a machine nowadays. I have become good at it, no doubt. And i have an arsenal of special tools just for mold lines. But i long for, and fear, the day i finally decide to actually sit down and paint it all. Why do i keep doing it like this? Because i will get better at painting faster and i will paint quicker if i have a shit load of ready-to-go stuff to paint without all the damned prep-work as a constant interruption. Easier to keep the focus on the painting and to grow as a painter doing it this way. Thank god for all the 40K and D&D Lore Channels, Critical Role and this channel to keep my mind from dying while scraping all those mold lines.
I am in the same position I used to paint armies 5 Games workshop ones ,2 Warmachine ones 2 x 25mm medieval and 8 x 15mm armies . Now I can't paint a single figure not even a Player character for D&D . Its been 3 years and I would love to do some but always something needed to do or too tired or need food or so many things and when nothing to do I couch in front of a tv .
Honestly feeling the same way, I'd never stop loving the hobby, but I've been doing my music more and I probably would be more inclined to finish my 3d printed ones If I got something like grey knights or some custodes guards for my desk,, or the undying saint, had those on my list for a while, would love to put them together and paint the heck out of them!
I do two things... 1. I mostly do terrain, so for a change I paint minis (a mini painter could do the opposite). 2. Play the game they are for. Eventually you'll feel the itch to paint and add more minis to the game.
I feel like I was burnt out for a long while. Not from painting so much, but feeling bad about my ability, I would feel defeated after doing one coat. But luckily recently I've picked up the brush again, it was just psyching myself up to do it.

That's why I have some models from like 7 different armies lol. Definitely helps fight burnout if you have a bit of variety sometimes

Funny, it’s the building/converting that I enjoy. The painting is the chore.
This is great advice. As a corollary, you can always add a little more detail to a terrain piece and it’s almost impossible to make them look worse.

This has literally been me for the past week. I'm burned out and I think it has to do with starting commissions. Since than I haven't painted any of my models. And when I paint my own I feel guilty. Thanks for the vid. I appreciate the vid and your personality.

I'm personally struggling with my Deff Dread, I can't wait for it to be finished, but it feels like a slog because there's so much to do and I'm trying to figure out what colour scheme to do. I've also found that because this is my first army since I was a kid I don't exactly have models to touch up yet until I finish them all, but my skills have improved so much since I was 11 that I'm super proud of what I've done
Being a new 40k player creating a routine of various activities helps a lot. Some painting, building, base focus, or just watching tutorial vids. I also play SWTOR and MHRise, and watch anime and toku series, work helps too of course

I have to agree. Forcing to paint is bad idea. Doing something else: playing video games, reading, maybe even playing wargame. That last step especially can help with motivation. Even more when that local tournament is approaching.
Lastly: pick up a project you know you won't finish. Single mini. Perhaps a 3d print of a video game character that you like. Slap on some paint and see where that leads you. Even better if character has simple desing. Like pokemon or something similar. Then you can just use basecoats and call it done... or add some shading... and blends... and OSL... aaaand you've just painted a mini!

I often struggle to push past the "ugly phase" and many of my projects are stuck at that phase.
I'm not too sure why this video popped up on YT for me, but I just quickly wanted to say: Burnout can happen in any situation - jobs, hobbies, relationships, you name it! It's good to take a break from time to time, take time for yourself, be it a day, a week or a month and return to your hobby when you feel like you're in a better place to continue it. Your method of dealing with burnout in your hobby seems like a healthy way to deal with it too though!

For more interest, I decided to paint each half of Skitarii Vanguard set in different fractions of Adeptus Mechanicus. In the future I will try to collect and paint all the factions of good guys, its cool!
Yeah the best thing to do is to have a small break or deal with other parts of the hobby. My saving grace was doing a little terrain.

Best cure for burnout I discovered...taking some few pieces, like the track units for a leman Russ...and completely kitbashing one of the many variants using nothing but plasticard. In my case? Currently working on a Collosus Bombard.
Jay, I have a suggestion that might make the gene stealers even creepier. If you paint the sculpted veins and / or freehand vein lines in dark "blood" color (ie: bluish claret for humans) and then, when it's dry, go over it with a thin coat of your flesh tone, it will add translucency to their skin.
This could be turned up to an 11 for a kill team by using a portable blacklight and glow paint.
One downside to building a mini army is that you pour your soul into completing a largely uniform collection that one can overlook tiny (literally tiny) details that can make the models truly pop.
I was burnt out a few weeks ago so I just stopped for a while. Came back and started painting an army of black templars and mid winter mini style sandstone necrons. Very happy with it. Maybe try paint a kill team if different coloured necrons. It’s what I do when I’m fed up with my main armies colour scheme for space marines at least. Or just take a break. We won’t mind lol
Tl;dr take a brake man we can wait it’s better than you killing the hobby for yourself lol
Good advice start with something almost finished get a kick out of finishing it get some motivation going.
This is what my math teacher used to say solve one easy problem first just so you get into the mood and then you can tackle the harder problems too.

I’m kinda in the middle of a painting slump so I found a stranger things lego set I had in my closet that I never finished. So hopefully when I finish it I’ll feel like painting again

I find having a schedule of what I’m painting useful because especially when I am mass basecoating minis it helps
I use a very similar approach... I sorted my showcase in stages of completion. On top are the finished minis. Underneath that are the unfinished ones, that are above those that are just base coated... and on the bottom are finished conversions and WIPs.
I found out that I paint much more often if I don't paint minis but motives. ie. today I feel the urge to paint some skin, I don't want to paint details on an ornate armor, just plain human skin. So I pick a bunch of those minis that show much of it paint for an hour or two and finished my task for the day. Most often I keep on finishing them and two hours become four or five.
Painting is a part of this HOBBY, it shouldn't be a chore. If I really want to do something with my minis but I really don't want to paint, I take my bitzbox and my pile of shame and look for some inspiration. Most of my hobby projects start with a conversion idea, followed by some browsing through my existing bits and online for new minis.
For me converting and planning of a conversion is the most fun. And with the enthusiasm I collected in converting a mini, I paint it straight away and use that energy to paint some unfinished minis with it.
But admitted I don't play 40k anymore, because painting so many samey minis is really not my cup of tea. I once tried to paint a whole AM platoon... and what shall I say? Nope. Boring as hell. I need variety... at least that's the thing that helped me through many motivation holes. Not only in miniature gaming but in general.
I actually just got out of my burn out yesterday and know I'm going to continue panting my brother world eaters. But I didn't do anything to get me outta my burn out I just waited till go the motivation to do it again.my burn out started in July and I barley got motivated again yesterday.

I have only been Cleaning Mold Lines, Washing, Gluing and Priming Models, Vehicles and loads of Terrain for almost six months now... stowing all of it in padded boxes. But not painted any of it yet.
My mind have passed beyond the darkest limits of boredom doing this. I go about it like a machine nowadays. I have become good at it, no doubt. And i have an arsenal of special tools just for mold lines. But i long for, and fear, the day i finally decide to actually sit down and paint it all.
Why do i keep doing it like this? Because i will get better at painting faster and i will paint quicker if i have a shit load of ready-to-go stuff to paint without all the damned prep-work as a constant interruption. Easier to keep the focus on the painting and to grow as a painter doing it this way.
Thank god for all the 40K and D&D Lore Channels, Critical Role and this channel to keep my mind from dying while scraping all those mold lines.
I am in the same position I used to paint armies 5 Games workshop ones ,2 Warmachine ones 2 x 25mm medieval and 8 x 15mm armies . Now I can't paint a single figure not even a Player character for D&D . Its been 3 years and I would love to do some but always something needed to do or too tired or need food or so many things and when nothing to do I couch in front of a tv .

Honestly feeling the same way, I'd never stop loving the hobby, but I've been doing my music more and I probably would be more inclined to finish my 3d printed ones If I got something like grey knights or some custodes guards for my desk,, or the undying saint, had those on my list for a while, would love to put them together and paint the heck out of them!

I agreed with the first 3 minutes of this video so hard that I felt the need to comment about it.
I do two things... 1. I mostly do terrain, so for a change I paint minis (a mini painter could do the opposite). 2. Play the game they are for. Eventually you'll feel the itch to paint and add more minis to the game.
I feel like I was burnt out for a long while. Not from painting so much, but feeling bad about my ability, I would feel defeated after doing one coat.
But luckily recently I've picked up the brush again, it was just psyching myself up to do it.
My frustration comes currently from that Inceptor fly stand which just does not wish to stay in place XD
