There was a White Dwarf issue way back in the RT days that named the 3 Imperial Dreadnought classes as Chuck (Contemptor), Eddy (Deredo) and Fury (Furibundus), so Furibundus was official. Also means the modern Contemptor and Deredeo dreads can happily be referred to as Chucks and Eddys 😁
WD100 had the names as well as the first revision to dreadnought rules since the main rulebook. WD101 had rules for the first wraithlord, called spirit walker back then, and WD102 had rules for the eldar warwalker, both of which were basically dreadnoughts with different pilot configurations. I believe they were all reprinted in the Warhammer 40,000 Compendium.
As a Battetech player I still laughed when I saw what the actual process was, it's kind of insane. Battletech's still exactly like that, just look at the rules for weapons that land multiple hits like missiles and shotguns: - Roll to-hit - Roll on the cluster table to see how many missiles / pellets or whatever actually landed - Group the individual bits by how much damage each "hit" is supposed to do - Roll hit locations for each of those - Roll crit location + internal crit location for each cluster you crit with And that's for one weapon on mechs which sometimes carry six or more. Missile boats are hell. I'm happy Alpha Strike exists.
I love it.. you get to choose to try and get a hit by aiming roughly centrally.. but where it’s armoured.. or risk more with a targeted shot at a a weak point like weapon .. doesn’t take long at all when you know what you’re doing
For sure. I think you could reintegrate the mechanic of targeting vehicle weapons into the game, but something like that in a 40k RPG would be really fun.
I disagree. The larger one's hull and limbs look just like mine from back in the day. The hull used with the shorter legs does look rough though. Mind you it could still be legit. The models we got in North America were authorized recasts by North American licensees. In Canada they were made by RAFM.
@@tharkwarrior Citadel Miniatures were not RECASTS in the USA they were cast from original molds made from Masters. These were done initially by Ral Partha. They were of high quality unlike these recasts.
The closing shot panning from the chaplain outrider to the Rogue Trader dread legitimately made me smile and chuckle. They’re still so charming and you did a great job folding them into your army.
The name of the deadnought was official. On p63-64 of the Compendium it states "Contemptor Class" (Chuck), "Deredeo Class" (Eddy) and "Furibundus Class" (Fury)
Holy cow! I have an oldhammer Zoat I bought off of Ebay a while back, and I knew it had to be either a full recast or kitbashed as it has an arm that was very obviously from a different model. Had no idea what the arm was from until I saw this video!! It's the double bolter barrel off the complete dreadnaught you've got here: mystery solved!
That colour 3d printed mummy is quite amazing. A quick squirt with some matt varnish and it would be ready for the tabletop. Those Dreadnoughts are things of goofy beauty.
I bought one of these along with the box of 30 multi part plastic space marines when I first got into WH40K way back in 1988. GW did call them Furibundus! There was an article in White Dwarf 100 or 101 that gave the stats for three dreadnought types: Contemptor, Doredo and Furibundus. Nicknamed Chuck, Eddy and Fury!! I am typing this from memory bit I still have my old White Dwarfs somewhere...
I can never get over how drawn out and convoluted some rules can be. That's why I used to love Hero Quest when I was a teen. So simple but also gratifying.
Everything from One Page Rules is pretty good and gaining a little traction... and their biggest game is shamelessly for 40k minis (and whatever else you can come up with).
These targeting rules were one of several iterations during Rogue Trader as they messed with the rules that ultimately resulted in the 2nd edition rules. They didn't really stick.
I started playing in the late 80s, and have a couple dozen of these RT dreadnoughts in their 3 patterns. Certainly one of my all time favorite models to come from this game.
That last explanation for shooting was... wow, that was certainly an interesting system lol. Love how those models ended up looking, despite the sculpt itself they actually look cool!
Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition are still, by far, my most loved 40K editions. I tried all other editions for some time but I always go back to 2nd Edition. There is no garbage like Primaris Marines, I only use them as True-Scale Marines. The ruleset is stable, no need to buy new minis because of Codex Power Creep or sudden point costs changes. I really like it. I can only encourage you to search for BattleBible and try it.
I love my little dreadnought. It cost me 4 pounds (in 1992, I think) from a local shop called The Stamp Corner, which still operates today. The dreadnaught is armed with twin bolters on each hand, and this was back when an imperial guardsman could ride in one. I've stripped the paint and repainted this model 3 times now :) Currently in imperial guard colours. I wonder what 9th edition unit it could count as? An armoured sentinel?
I love these and the stinger tailed Chaos Dreadnought too. Mine disappeared a long time ago, I've been keeping an eye on eBay for one but every time they get back down to a reasonable price someone makes a really cool UA-cam video about them and the price shoots back up.... 😂😂😂
Jays plasma coils are the glowiest looking ones i know, everyone else make the brightest and thus hottest part be the very outside of the coils but really since thats the part thats most exposed to open air it should be the least warm part!
The dreads look neat in a derpy way but as you kept painting it I started making a connection with the squats and I think if they changed out the face plate for the one the infantry have and maybe make a drill available or something it would be an amazing squat dreadnaught
Talking smack like that about these Dreads is like walking up to a new mom and calling her baby ugly. Jay, you've forgotten that these models started all the other cool Dreadnoughts that came after. Still, you did a pretty sweet paint job and made the look good. And GW did indeed officially name one version of that dread Furibundus, or Fury for short.
But... these Dreads ARE ugly. So were the vast majority of RT-era minis. I say that as someone who played in that era. They were bad then, and they're bad now.
I love the old rogue trader stuff, I def have a lot of influence from those early days left in me. I reckon an army of these guys would make a cool marine army in general.
I remember that vehicle targeting from way back when (I.E. 29-30 years ago). Though it came after Rogue Trader since that was late 1980's. We also learned that you can place that template anyway over the model template so placing it at an angle did wonders. But you ended up taking shots at it since for most hits would only destroy a section. Oh and if you think these Dread's were bad try looking at the robots from back then.
I loved the goofy old Contemptor design so much that I got one to kitbash that sat unfinished on my desk for half a year... it sits there right now, surrounded by modern models...
Great to see you bring some more classic RT into your army. Although I imagined (from the thumb nail / title) that you'd do them as some Ad Mech Robot allies (RT model "counts as" Kastelan Robots). Also great to see you go through 2nd Ed Vehicle rules. I remember it well. 2nd Ed wasn't fast paced at all, but it was engrossing and a lot of fun. And more often than not could take a weekend to play. I'm fairly certain your 3 Marines also take D6 Str 10 hits with a minus 3 modifier from the explosion. I recall restless nights where my thoughts were plagued with worry that I'd placed my unit too close to my vehicle and tomorrow during my opponents turn it could all go [BoOm!] because 2nd Ed wasn't kind to vehicles. A good marksman with a Targetter could almost guarantee an explosion outcome meaning that you wanted to keep your units away from them (as opposed to using them for deployment and/or cover).
I ended up ordering from Only Games a few days after I saw this video. Forgot to use the discount but emailed them saying I found them from you and they even replied back saying that was cool. Then the 5 day production window came and went (ordered on the 5th). Sent an email through their site asking for just an update a few days ago on the production and nothing for two more days until I got a notification it was being shipped out. But no direct communication. Hoping the sculpts/printing is well done at least. Ok with waiting for stuff, just want some updates or communication when there are delays.
That vehicle manual you have there is about the 3rd major revision to the Rogue Trader ruleset. Chapter Approved made some changes to the rules, The Compendium and the Compilation made some major changes. The Vehicle Manual was just insanely complicated, I don't think anyone actually played using those rules much until the "2nd Edition" came out.
I've always loved the furibundus dreadnought. It's so ridiculously dorky, just like the saturnine terminators. I honestly think with a little modernization the design could go a long way, or you could easily adapt them and they'd fit in with Leagues or Tau
I never owned a dreadnought until recently. Lebiathan reminded me, that the old 2nd Edition Carnifex was one of the great iconics 40k ever had. So, I tried to get my hands on one. (Oh... and on Leviathan, of course. So looks like there is the first Space Marine Dreadnought in it, I will ever own.) But at least I'm considering to try to get a few of this older Rogue Trader Miniatures as well.
Jay, you need to read the target shift part of the Vehicle Manual again - you can shift either horizontally or vertically, but not both! I'm afraid your ork missed! It's worth noting perhaps that Rogue Trader went through 3 separate sets of rules for dreadnoughts, with the Vehicle Manual being the last and weirdest. If I recall correctly at least one of the others would be far more familiar to anyone that knows the 8th/9th edition dreadnought rules, with dreadnoughts having stats much closer to those of standard models.
My coworker used to live in the UK and has some white dwarfs from 1988. The dreadnought pilots were just regular dudes but the dreadnoughts could have neural links. The bond could become permanent and their want for combat would drive them to become mercenaries or marauders (assuming they lived long enough for that to happen).
I still have six of those bad boys from back in the day. The one you have with a missile launcher is actually a Deredeo (Eddy) class dreadnought, I guess the one with the plasma gun could count as a Furibundus (Fury) class as they were equipped with a lascannon, or you could just say it is a Juggernaut (Jay) class dread.
I had three of these dreads in my Rouge Trader Dark Angels army. They were my work horse anti tank units. Till the turned traitor. All hail Black Legion!
I have one of those. Bought it when it was new. Mine has a toothpastetube metal banner, that was all the rage back then. And yes, Furibundus was an official name back then.
Your two guys seem to have mixed up the torso/leg combos, too. You could buy the short legs with the short-wide torso, or the long legs with the tall-thin. Swapping them around gave you the option of the short, thin stumpy one and the giant-wide model. Really different silhouettes.
I've never looked at the vehicle manual before. I thought the original vehicle rules in the base Rogue Trader book were complex, but that makes one shot take 10 minutes to figure out. Nice.
Great retro models and great vid as always. I'm currently working on mummified undead as a proxy tomb kings army, ordered then from only games as I have no 3d printer and they are very neatly printed. 3 Ushabti great bows 3 Ushabti swords 10 Horsemen 20 Warriors 1 Tomb King on beast. I'll get there one day 😀
I think you could probably make these dreads look a lot better with some kitbashing. The epic scale nights have a lot of armor and peg parts that could probably be grafted on by a careful hand to get a bulkier and more imposing model.
No idea why everyone hates them, this just has to be my alltime favorite dread design alongside the one from epic/space crusade. l really gotta get one of these at some point. I do have the chaos one and that sculpt is actually pretty good imo, the details really give it a lot more character, but well exactly that is kinda something loyalists always lacked so it's not really a fair comparison. Also on the name, these dreadnoughts were actually the OG contemptors, before they were reimagined by forgeworld. And even tho it's a bit far fetched you can kinda see the similarities in the overall design, it's a lot closer to this one than the classic box dread. (As a sidenote the afformentioned space crusade dreadnought was also the first to be called the dorito)
I bought a Chaos dreadnought back in around 1991, but was told by the guy in the shop that it was no longer playable. I didn't care, though, because I just wanted to paint it. Trouble was that it was such a big lump of metal that the glue barely held its body upright!
Got one of those original marine Dreadnoughts painted (badly) in Ultramarines colours. No idea where it is but kinda inspired to dig it out to strip and repaint....
With these old Dreadnoughts, I'm pretty certain that the pilots were still completely alive and in possession of their limbs; so, getting in to one of these bad boys would be a personal choice. 😄
I have the taller one and I actually called GW on how to use them in a modern game to see if it is supposed to be an Eddy or Fury. They told me to “slap it on a 40mm and use standard dreadnought rules.” I asked for a little more detail like shouldn’t it be one of the (still at that time) forge world models, and he acted like he was not supposed to say that kind of specific, but finally said whatever your opponent and tournament boss will agree to otherwise treat it as a good old blocky bastard.
Two different models of early dread there. The one with the short legs is Furibundus (Fury), the longer legs is a Deredeo (Eddy) pattern. I started 40k back in the RT era, my first dread was a Furibundus. I still have him. And yeah, he looks derpy next to the more modern models, but you gotta respect the ancient.
The ork dreadnought from rogue trader is the most beautiful dread they've ever made
How dare you, the one from the 2nd Edition Starter Set is clearly the best dreadnought ever created. Hands down, no contest
Would you be willing to trade a unopened storm cast eternal paladins box for a tyranids army ?
@@DashCamSheffield it's close, but it feels a little flat by comparison
But not as good as the old Screamer Killer Carnifex of course.
i think redemptor is better firstly because it is simple and innovative and easty to find an dewsy to be picked up by any spwce marine player
Yeah it's reprinted on page 56 of the RT Compendium, there are also a few more art pieces.
WD100 had the names as well as the first revision to dreadnought rules since the main rulebook. WD101 had rules for the first wraithlord, called spirit walker back then, and WD102 had rules for the eldar warwalker, both of which were basically dreadnoughts with different pilot configurations. Thankyou Kev, I thought those were the real names but I couldn't be sure - I remembered "Deredeo" from the Epic scale game.
The leviathan should have been the furibundus
The targetting reticule looks fun. Not really designed for fast play, but for an RPG it seems so interesting.
Yeah, or for a game with a few large mechs
As a Battetech player I still laughed when I saw what the actual process was, it's kind of insane. Battletech's still exactly like that, just look at the rules for weapons that land multiple hits like missiles and shotguns:

It's a neat idea, but the game balance was bad. Way too easy to target insta-kill crits.
As an owner of 3 originals from 35 years ago those look like recasts to me. Citadel Minis even 35 years ago were good quality.
Yeah those are recasts
I disagree. The larger one's hull and limbs look just like mine from back in the day. The hull used with the shorter legs does look rough though. Mind you it could still be legit. They have the same miscast on the lower bit between the legs that mine did and I got mine direct from GW mail order.
I love the clear sheet template. We should bring those back! 😆
That clear targeting thing is pretty dope
The closing shot panning from the chaplain outrider to the Rogue Trader dread legitimately made me smile and chuckle. They’re still so charming and you did a great job folding them into your army.

Those dreads and those rules seem perfectly matched to each other.

I bought a Chaos dreadnought back in around 1991, but was told by the guy in the shop that it was no longer playable. I didn't care, though, because I just wanted to paint it. Trouble was that it was such a big lump of metal that the glue barely held its body upright!
You really need to pin anything like that, and a tiny bit of paperclip won't necessarily do it.
@@m__y-t-s Yes, definitely! I didn't know that at the time, as I was only a child.
Got one of those original marine Dreadnoughts painted (badly) in Ultramarines colours. No idea where it is but kinda inspired to dig it out to strip and repaint....
1:32 funny enough Jay, that's a chaos Dreadnought.
I really enjoyed that level of complexity for shooting... but definitely only for a skirmish scale game :)
Unpopular opion, but I think the original dreadnought looks pretty cool.
I love their goofy yet imposing design! I think the paint job done here really brings them to life, though
You did a terrific job
2:02 oof! 🙃
Dreadnoughts: "brothers... why do I feel weird?"
SM: *holding in laughter* "Nothing, brother. you look great!"
With these old Dreadnoughts, I'm pretty certain that the pilots were still completely alive and in possession of their limbs; so, getting in to one of these bad boys would be a personal choice. 😄
@@euansmith3699 so like the primaris fake dreadnought?
@@BarelyDecentProduction Yeah, and just as tubby 😄
Except for the Ork dread (Killa Kan?), I have all the others. Crazy... :)
It looks exactly like all those things you said, and yet, its my one true love
I remember seeing this loads as they cropped up in a lot of the marketing images at the time
Great work! In spite of that sculptor’s best efforts, you made them look really cool! 😝
Those look like good Ork dreadnaughts!
They look like they are the right size to be a good proxy for the centurions.
Man, u posts ur videos so early! Which is great for me. U must be an early bird too Jay. Kudos.
I love this! But I mean i love the old models
they should bring back this design for the deathguard, it would go along great with the other walking peanuts, the plaguebearers
I've got one of these from original mail order back in the day
The Chaos Android Dreadnought from Space Crusade is my favourite Dread ever but these are pretty awesome(ly bad), great stuff!
BEST! MODELS! EVER!
Said no one ever
I have the taller one and I actually called GW on how to use them in a modern game to see if it is supposed to be an Eddy or Fury. They told me to “slap it on a 40mm and use standard dreadnought rules.” I asked for a little more detail like shouldn’t it be one of the (still at that time) forge world models, and he acted like he was not supposed to say that kind of specific, but finally said whatever your opponent and tournament boss will agree to otherwise treat it as a good old blocky bastard.
So many memories, and to think second edition was a huge improvement to the rules.
