Mapping a Labyrinth of Coral

In the southern Red Sea, the Farasan Banks lie 40km off the southwestern coast of Saudi Arabia. This shoal is 100 kilometers wide and stretches 800 kilometers down the coast. It hosts very high levels of marine biodiversity including a large amount of endemic species and ecological hotspots full of marine life, like blue holes.
It is estimated that there are 6 million acres of submerged coral reefs and small islands. Corals in particular seem highly resilient in this hottest and most saline of seas. Jacques Cousteau described the area as the wildest of all reef complexes in the Red Sea. During the Red Sea Decade Expedition, scientists from KAUST mapped the Farasan Banks to understand the species that inhabit it, for they could hold the key to the unique success of these species.
