I have the 40 pint version. 20+ years old. Lived all its life in the wet basement. Ran like a champ until recently. The compressor overload terminals are rotten.

I have the same unit, 50 pt.; mine is from 1987 and the cabinet is wood grain. Otherwise the same. I purchased it new at Sears. It is on now as I write this. Gave it a cleaning today.

I remember how my family had a delonghi humidifier made in Italy that was bought new when moving to the house that I am still living at. The compressor broke after using it for almost 10 years. The new one in the basement is a delonghi with electronic buttons, but it was made in China.

It seems like none of the dehumidifier or air conditioners made within the last 10 years or so are made to last more than a few seasons.

That new one won’t last terribly long.

@@DBVintage The new one was bought new in the summer of 2009 and it still works. It's now only used when it's raining outside or humid.

I know I am late to this video, but what an awesome dehumidifier! Made well, R-22, and a Reciprocating compressor! These dehumidifiers are also special to me because there was one of these at a library that I used to go to when I was very little. I remember it was the first dehumidifier I ever saw, and I remember when I went there, for a little bit of the time I just went and sat by it lol. I also remember it had a very cool, and robust recip sound.

It's always nice to see an R22 system still running. 400 PSI does seem rather high for R22 but R22 does run higher pressures than R500. Both are many times lower than R410A of course. I agree the compressor sounded funny. Possibly the oil not being circulated properly? As far as the coil, I don't know how it would get like that if it wasn't factory. I do agree that it's a bad idea to have the loops shoved right against the cabinet. I'm not sure if it's low on charge or not. These do take a while when they haven't been used for a long time, but that seemed like an extreme length of time and the coil wasn't completely cold. I would argue that fixing up an R22 system is worth it, but if the coil is leaking, then you would have to replace the evaporator to have a lasting repair. Maybe it hasn't been used in a long time.

I suspect it was something with the oil, I turned it on again yesterday and the compressor sounded fine. I'd like to see it go through 3 or 5 multiple-hour operation cycles before I deem it low on charge. When I remove the cabinet I will check for a leak in the loops. Anything with R22 is worth repairing, this will be repaired as well in due time.

@@JordanU Fully agree on the repair of R22 products. No modern refrigerants perform nearly as well as R22. If it still doesn't get cold all the way after a few cycles, then I would deem it low on charge. Do you have a way to check for leaks?

      @@andrewg593 Yes.

@@JordanU It would be a shame if it did have a leak, but I'm sure it would fix up nicely and be another perfectly functional R22 system.

My compressor wont come on my unit like yours...What can I do? Fan runs....clicks as if it is trying to turn on compressor. Nothing happens. Thanks in advance

Replace the capacitor/starting relay/overload mechanism on the compressor. Should be fine after that, the component is known to fail in these. In fact I believe they were recalled for that reason.

Whenever my dehumidifiers have sat for a while I find they need to be cycled a couple of times before they are running properly. Yours looks a lot like a Hampton bay.

In the late 80s or early 90s Fedders bought the EQK name ( EQK was friends with Fedders in the past makeing grills that are practically the same and Fedders made bace model window air conditioners and Nordyne). At the time Fedders made units for Maytag, Hampton Bay, Nordyne Quiet Kool, and of course Emerson Quiet Kool. UA-camr Jaykay18 has the Hampton Bay model and it has a awesome startup sound and Jaykay18 describes it as "the soda machine at the run down motel". Sadly this unit dosen't sound as cool as Jaykay18's Hampton Bay but they have a good reputation.

Eric Freeze 19 I have a Maytag dehumidifier and window Ac that have very identical front grills in my office as well as an older fedders unit in my bedroom. All made at the same factory. They seem to be very good machines

I'd like to give this a few lengthy operation cycles before I deem there to be something wrong with it, I'm not convinced yet. As noted above, there was a variant of this that sold under the Hampton Bay name at the Home Depot.

How would you recommend cleaning the filter? Have one for my basement apartment that's was in the attic for at least 20 years so the filter very dusty haha. I've seen suggestions of vacuuming it or cleaning it will soap and water. But with it's age it's not very easy to come by a replacement filter so I don't want to mess this one up.

I've used it a handful of times since the video, the noise seems to go away shortly after startup once it warms up. I'm going to use it as-is, there's not much you can do if the noise is coming from something internal to the compressor. Even with the sound, this machine is still landslides better than anything you can buy today.
