  • The initial checkout of a White Westinghouse branded 20-pint dehumidifier model ED203F3. This one is very similar in form-factor to the Westinghouse unit I showed a few days ago. It utilizes a reciprocating compressor with R-500 refrigerant. Interestingly enough, it behaves the same way as the other one in regards to the frost and suction temperatures.
I theorized in the video of the 1968 unit that the charge was low. I still stand by that theory, and I think the same can be said about this one. However, I'm now starting to think this is the way it's intended to be. Perhaps it's charged this way as the intended area of operation is a cool basement. I'm testing these machines in warm areas in the high 70s. It's very possible the entire coil would get cold if the temperature was 15-20 degrees cooler, which would be a realistic use case. Further testing is in order.

Jordan, please don’t make the mistake I did ….. When I bought my house it came with a circa early 1980s White Westinghouse dehumidifier which I used for several years, but was fooled into buying a Friedrich energy star model in 2020…..well you might guess what’s coming next….in 2022 the compressor failed. Whatever money I saved on electricity went out the window due to it short life span. Oh and by the way, the White Westinghouse which thankfully I didn’t get rid of, is back in use and running beautifully.

I certainly won't. I'm well aware of the "energy-saving" appliances scam.

I’m kind of amazed at how little they change the overall design in decades

Me too, this basic design seemed to last decades.

I’ve got an ancient Sears Coldspot dehumidifier in my basement… works great! It’s very heavy.

      Heavy usually means better.

@@JordanU it’s a good dehumidifier for sure. I remember hauling it down my basement 30 years ago…. Have no idea if I’ll ever get it back up! I use it as a backup in case my newer Frigidaire dehumidifier fails.

This would have been made after 1975 when WCI bought Westinghouse appliances being that it's a White-Westinghouse branded unit. A lot of these older dehumidifiers either don't get cold all the way through or they like to stay partially iced if its under around 70 degrees. It seems wrong but that's just how they are. I'm speculating that's one reason why they started to move away from these tube style evaporator coils. I have even seen some that have a thin layer of ice on the coils yet they are still dripping, they never fully ice over which is very strange yet common behavior on any of these older units. I have an identical unit to your other one and it also acts the same way.

Thanks for the information. I've acquired a few of these since this video and the others also behave the same way. I completely agree with your conclusion, seems wrong but just the way it is.

Does it have an air filter to clean. Got mine at a garage sale 27 years ago with no manual.

      No, just clean the coils.
