  • The initial checkout of a Westinghouse Custom 20 dehumidifier model ECJ20001. The unit was made in 1968 and utilizes R-12 refrigerant with a reciprocating compressor. It is still operational after all these years, but appears that it may be a hair low on refrigerant.

    Not bad for 55 years old and Made in USA explains it

    That's funny. I also used to have that same unit Although mine was "refurbished" in 1972. Yours is missing a piece, it is supposed to have a plastic v shaped tray under the coil which allowed you you to hook up a hose directly to it. The one on mine broke as well. I am not sure if the bucket would have also had a hose connection like the later WCI units or not.

      I have one of these with the bucket. If i remember correctly it just has a hose connection on the pan under the coil, not on the bucket itself. I'll double check it later.

      @@brunoshow124 I ended up breaking off that pan which was plastic because someone yanked on the hose it was connected to, so the unit got scrapped before I had the chance to try to fix it.

      @@WalterKnox That sucks. I just looked at mine, the bucket is just a plastic tub, no way to connect it to a hose.

    I have that same exact unit in my basement and works great the previous owners from the 1950s and 1991 forgot to bring it on their move and was a "gift" for us to use not one issue we had since we first used it back in 2007

    I have to say, dehumidifiers have surprised me in the past. I just rescently almost condemned a whirlpool made Kenmore unit because I thought it was out of charge. After leaving it on for nearly half an hour, it still hadn't built head pressure. I got sidetracked and ended up accidentally leaving it on overnight and when I came back, the bucket was full. After that initial scare, it had been working perfectly fine sense.
    If it really is out of charge, have you ever tried usign R-152a in place of R-12? R-152a can be bought cheaply anywhere and works quite well. Although a lot of people will tell you that you should, you really don't even need to change the oil. I used R-152a in both of my cars in place of R-12 and in a mini fridge that my friend has in place of R-12 and both have been working great for over 2 years.

      I wonder if perhaps they're a bit undercharged by design, with the intention of being used in cooler environments like underground basements. I was testing this at almost 80 degrees, which is considerably warmer than most damp basements will ever be.

    • @WalterKnox
      @WalterKnox 11 місяців тому

      @@JordanU That is a thought. The one I had ran in a cold crawlspace down to around 60 degrees and it never froze up on us.

    Great video. I have almost the same machine, but slightly older. And mine exhibits the same behavior. But the coil is copper and it gets frost on both layers within maybe 20 minutes. And then it defrost. I have no idea if this is ideal, but it seems to be effective at removing humidity. My main concern is the insulation wrapping the compressor area. I am thinking it might have asbestos and need to be removed as it’s directly under the fan. I think the other difference in these older models is the fans are larger and run at a slower speed and make less noise.

      Interesting my parents has this model and still works good still funny story when we first moved to commack on long island the previous owners when they first built the house in 1955 forgot the unit and 3 other things so the fireplace humidifier and extra 1960s cortelco telephone were our gifts lol

    I have an identical one of these units that I use in a bedroom, it also takes a very long time to build pressure as well as the suction line not getting super cold. I think these units were a bit undercharged from the factory. Mine has its bucket still as well as an off balance fan.

    I suspect old oil is working its way through the system. It's also 60s tech which I'd expect to respond a bit differently than 80s or later tech. I think you ought to just be patient and let it run for 30 minutes to an hour. You might be jumping the gun on leaking refrigerant. Slow leaks are more of a thing on systems that aren't sealed. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, so I think you ought to be more patient with it. Even if you can find a guy that will fill the system, it's a convoluted process where the system is opened and a valve is brazed on. It's done for empty systems. I don't think they can capture the Freon like that which is required by law. It would just get dumped into the atmosphere. You can ask a guy who knows about this kind of thing.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  11 місяців тому +1

      I had it on for over a half hour in total. It should come back cold much faster than that. I will give it a few more tests to see if it just needs time to circulate the system, but it's heating up more than I'm comfortable with. I'm a licensed tech, I know how to recharge the system. The issue is finding the refrigerant, which is obscenely priced. Sadly a conversion to an alternative refrigerant is probably more viable at this point.
