When I don't feel I have a specific idea in mind, I just start smearing paint around non-objectively. Just getting myself moving is 90% of the battle 110% of the time. That and I remind myself of the famous Chuck Close quote: "Inspiration is for amateurs - the rest of us just show up and get to work."
I love finding other black artists who use oils I’m definitely subscribed ✨

This book sounds interesting. I definitely have that struggle of forcing an idea to happen 😅. Will definitely have to check it out
One of the things I do for idea is to keep a notebook, not a sketchbook, with me when I am painting. I always seem to get ideas for other paintings when I am in the middle of a painting. So I put those ideas in the notebook, often with a little thumbnail sketch for composition.
Then when I am looking for ideas to paint, I go to the notebook. Oh, the notebook has a title on the cover......The Well
