I just want to thank you for consistently pushing the idea that even those of us with physical disability and chronic pain can make cool things. I know a lot of people with limited mobility try to avoid showing their mobility aids in their videos, but just seeing your crutches made me feel better about my cane as a young person with several auto-inflammatory issues. Thank you.
Thank you. Your comment honestly means a lot. I vividly remember what it's like to feel insecure/inadequate as a 'young person' who relies on various mobility aids. If by including my own in my videos I can help normalise and destigmatise mobility aid use (even to a small degree) that genuinely makes me happy.
@@SkeinSpider it’s awesome that you do. I am a costume maker in NSW and my own disabilities have made it hard to continue doing my work to the extent I want to. Having role models and others I can relate to who listen to their bodies and normalize it makes it much easier both for me, and for anyone else who may not understand.
Wow. Designing it yourself and going for a whole dress when you’re fairly new to garment making. I thought I was ballsy making one of my first wearables in fingering weight yarn. 😂 (it’s actually gorgeous. I did use a pattern and it’s a fairly basic top with a really lovely lace thing going for the sleeves and like neck to just above my bust. So the kind of top you can dress up or down and I made it in a hot pink cotton). Actually found I both adore working with the very fine yarns and am all geeked out over wearables now. I mean how awesome it to finish and go “OMG I made clothes!” 😂 I really want to make a maxi skirt with very intricate detail. I had one as a teenager that I’m not even sure where it came from but it was my favorite skirt of all time and I wore it until it had huge holes. I was very into a goth aesthetic and it was black lace weight cotton yarn over a black cotton lining and just fit my whole Stevie Nicks wannabe style. I have yet to find just the right pattern to replicate it and don’t know whatever happened to it or if I have any photos to try and recreate it from scratch. But the skirt idea still intimidates me. That you did a whole dang dress. Just wow! And it’s beautiful! You’ve actually inspired me to consider freehanding one myself sometime. But waaaay too many projects going right now.
Wow! Definitely not your 'grandma's crocheted dress". This is so cute and yes, I think you should make a top or two (without the skirt). Bravo, You did good. BTW, I love the Hartland yarn as it's so nice to work with. May split a little but we're not all perfect. Love to see what you come up with next.
The bunching at the back armpit area is because of the shape of the sleeve. You can get away with rectangular shapes in loose fitting garments but tighter garments need proper sleeve shapes. The outer sleeve needs to be longer than the under arm, it's the extra length or extra fabric that you're seeing in the bunching. Have a look at some sewing patterns to see the shape I'm talking about.
If you would like to make things with puffy sleeves in the future using this pattern or a similar pattern, I would suggest using the "strap" part you have as an under-sleeve and then crocheting over it to give the volume. This will help support the puff and keep the shape better, you can also stuff them. For clarification, this would look like a tube running around the arm, kind of like a kid's pool floaty armband but prettier. I'd love to see something with puffy sleeves.
I don't know if you have any in your stash but personally I adore making clothes with bamboo or bamboo/cotton blend yarn. It's silky soft, stays quite cool, and very nice to work with. The main drawback is it's a bit denser and heavier than acrylic, so you need to be a little mindful that the stitches will stretch more under gravity, so there's some quirks there.
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I think I've only got a single 50g skein of bamboo yarn, so not nearly enough to make a full garment lol. But when I can get my hands on some more, I'd like to give it a try.
As I sit here in front of the heater with my blanket and 12 layers of clothing....that is an amazing dress! This video really shows that if you trust yourself and try, it may work. Thank you.
Love this so much! Also this is random but I have cerebral palsy and I use the same style of crutches. I didn’t know you use crutches so I found myself excitedly going “wait hold up wait?!?”
Aw Leigh, that's such an adorable dress! Love the shaping, it's really flattering. I'm just in awe of the fact that you got stuck right in and made it yourself on the fly. 'Talented' doesn't come close! Brilliant work.
Thanks so much. I honestly surprised myself with this one, I didn't think it would turn out as well as it did....even with a few errors here and there lol.
Oh my goshhhhh 😮 I love it! It’s so whimsical and fun! I’ve made garments but with sewing instead of crochet. Garment crafting is such an art form and you did it beautifully!
Thank you :). I have a little bit of experience sewing (though I haven't done it for a few years) so I drew on that as much as I could but the mediums are so different that I don't think it was much help here lol.
I'm going to make a top using the same method at some point because I was so happy with how it turned out. Just gotta tweak the pattern a little first.
OMG I loooove it! I envy anyone who can wear fun clothes.... When you were talking about the ruffles across the bust, I assumed it'd be ruched, but I prefer the ribding now that I see how it has nice uniformity to it. Might have to borrow that idea! 😉
I only went with the ribbing because I thought it'd be the easiest thing to do and I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Well, the second attempt at least lol.
I don’t know if you’ll see this from the time that’s passed since you posted, but I think the bunching in the sleeve is due to the shoulder seam placement. The shoulder seam should end at the edge of the shoulder, not going past it. The bunching of that seam I believe is what’s causing the issue! :)
Hi from Texas! I'm liking your show... You do different and interesting things that I enjoy ❤ You make crocheting clothes look easy!!! I've never attempted clothing.. Always stick to aphgans and throws... But you have inspired me! ❤
Hello from Edinburgh, I’m new to your channel and so far I’ve loved everything I’ve watched. I’m loving the mushrooms dress. Once my crochet skills are more advanced I will definitely be making one of my own.
Could you explain again just how you got that ruffle in the front? I love the way it looks on "the bust" and it would CERTAINLY solve one of my heavy chested "boxy" problems😅 It looks like you did HDC in the back loop only, then went back and forth and then sewed the panel to the dress. But it didn't "sound" like that was what you said. It "sounded" like you said you just did 2 HDC in each stitch and "may decide to slip stitch" some together to create a tighter pull. I would REALLY like to see how you made that part!
You're spot on, that's exactly what I did. I changed my mind slightly (if I remember correctly lol) from what I originally planned to do and basically just went with the ribbing method I use to make cuffs/waistbands, joining each end to the underarms of the dress.
The ruffle part is Really cute, I know it would probably take a lot of yarn. But I think that ruffle texture would look really good for the skirt portion (think of the gills on mushrooms.) But it's still a beautiful dress the way it is!
Amazing! Is it hot to wear? Cotton or linen would be better? So expensive though. Or maybe just size 2 acrilic? I really want to make this but I'm the type that hats things like tank tops made out of polyester cause it clings and I die in them. So seeing my options.
It's not hot to wear atm, but it is winter here and I haven't worn it for longer than about 20 minutes, so that probably makes a difference. I think cotton would work better but you're right, it's so expensive. (Plus, I was trying to use up yarn from my stash in this project).
Lovely top Love the combination of red and white :) Now I want to make a mushroom top ahaha If you make a tutorial for the top that'd be very appreciated 🤍🧡
Im looking at this and wanting to pair it with the tiktok mushroom skirt and a mushroom hat and skirt and shoes because why not lol Edit: i realize i said skirt twice sorry this just makes me happy

The little Ace spider!!!!🥺
I was a fool, my first project was a coaster. My second project was a sweater! Now I love making clothes more than anything 😊

I love that you did the 360 twist on the edging

Makes sense, I'll take that into consideration in the future. Thanks for the info :)
Oh. This just clicked in my head. Yeah, you’d need the almost omega shape arch, maybe increases to get around the shoulder and make the 1/4 sphere.
If you would like to make things with puffy sleeves in the future using this pattern or a similar pattern, I would suggest using the "strap" part you have as an under-sleeve and then crocheting over it to give the volume. Thanks so much for the tip. I want to try and recreate and improve this design at some point, so I'll keep this in mind.
I love the top on you. You did a great job! I wouldn't mind seeing you remake the top again in a different color. 😊
Thank you, I do have plans to remake it in an upcoming video 💙
Absolutely adorable!!! Well done, young lady!!! ❤️🤍🫶🏻🧶
I saw mushroom dress in my notifications and I dropped everything to come watch

I LOVE THIS! I really love how you constructed the top of this dress.
That ended up being my favourite part too. So much so that I'm planning to incorporate it into other clothing designs.
You can do it!! I can't wait to see it done. 🤗 Might just make one to wear when my husband and I do a craft show 🤣
Oh my goshhhhh 😮 I love it! It’s so whimsical and fun! I’ve made garments but with sewing instead of crochet. Garment crafting is such an art form and you did it beautifully!

Absolutely loving it! I have to admit, I think like the fact that the ruffles continue on under the arms and the back section sits back further.
Just beautiful...❤❤.. you even made cuff crutches look sylish and that is not easy to do, I should know. Thanks for sharing this video.
It's cute. I love that you plan to make more and adjust your patterns. It would make an adorable top!
Wow it's beautiful. You have done an amazing job
I really loooooove the top part of the dress! You should really make another top like this! I think i'll do that, it really inspire me! ❤
I'm going to make a top using the same method at some point because I was so happy with how it turned out. Just gotta tweak the pattern a little first.
This dress is so beautiful 😍
Thank you :)
Omfg, this is the cutest thing I've ever!! Brilliant! ❤❤🍄🍄
This is absolutely adorable! I can't wait until you make your next attempt and create a tutorial (I hope so but don't want to assume)
I'm open to making a tutorial at some point, just want to work on fixing a few of the mistakes first.
This is so lovely! ❤🍄❤ I'm going to try one for myself.
So cute! I would make just the top part just on its own!
I'd like to try that at some point too.
I love it. I agree, the bodice is awesome. Would be a cute sweater.
I think so too. I reckon I'll try making a jumper version at some point.
I love this so much and I'm going to haveta break out of my crochet comfort zone to try something like this
Go for it! :)
It’s so beautiful!! I wonder if doing the skirt in Tunisian Crochet would give it a better drape? More like a knit fabric
Thank you! I haven't tried Tunisian crochet yet so I have no idea what the difference would be vs regular crochet but I'd be interested to find out.
You did an amazing job with this Leigh 🥰
bloody brilliant!
Super cute!
Love it could you draw up a pattern would love to make it xx❤❤❤❤❤❤
I might make a tutorial at some point but there are a few errors I need to correct before I'd feel comfortable putting a pattern out there.
OMG I loooove it! I envy anyone who can wear fun clothes....

Love the dress. It is both very pretty and cute at the same time. I also think that the style is very flattering on you.
Great 1st attempt... you've got real talent. Very good job.😊
I don’t know if you’ll see this from the time that’s passed since you posted, but I think the bunching in the sleeve is due to the shoulder seam placement. That is a super cute dress
Hi from Texas!
I'm liking your show... You do different and interesting things that I enjoy ❤
You make crocheting clothes look easy!!! I've never attempted clothing..
Always stick to aphgans and throws... But you have inspired me! ❤
If you are ever going to make the top again just as is, please show the process again. It would be lovely as a more ”festive” design.
you've inspired me to make my haori! now I wanna make a mushroom dress too I love your channel!
OMG ITS SO CUTE!!!😍😍😍😍
So beautiful 🥰 great job 🤗 I can't wait to see the next one 😁
Wow. You did a fantastic job with your mushroom dress. You are very talented 🍄
Idea for if you remake it… do the big ruffles like the first top.
This is sooo cute! It looks amazing on you
Cheers :)
This is so gorgeous!
Hello from Edinburgh, I’m new to your channel and so far I’ve loved everything I’ve watched. I’m loving the mushrooms dress. Once my crochet skills are more advanced I will definitely be making one of my own.
Hi and welcome :)
It looks really good. You could possibly do a small ruffle at the bottom, as mushrooms do flare a little there. 💖💖
Could you explain again just how you got that ruffle in the front?
I love the way it looks on "the bust" and it would CERTAINLY solve one of my heavy chested "boxy" problems😅
It looks like you did HDC in the back loop only, then went back and forth and then sewed the panel to the dress. But it didn't "sound" like that was what you said. It "sounded" like you said you just did 2 HDC in each stitch and "may decide to slip stitch" some together to create a tighter pull.

I changed my mind slightly (if I remember correctly lol) from what I originally planned to do and basically just went with the ribbing method I use to make cuffs/waistbands, joining each end to the underarms of the dress.
Adding a lace insert in the front corners of the neckline would close up the arms slipping off I think. Really nice though
The ruffle part is Really cute, I know it would probably take a lot of yarn. But I think that ruffle texture would look really good for the skirt portion (think of the gills on mushrooms.) But it's still a beautiful dress the way it is!
I considered doing that as a sort of petticoat under the skirt but you're 100% right, it would use so much yarn and I didn't have nearly enough.
This is so cute.
it's so cute oml, i gotta try making my own now- you always inspire me! 💖
I feel like your first set of ruffles might make a poofy and cute skirt!
I think so too but I reckon it would use sooo much yarn. Just the bit I crocheted was about a skein and a half :S
This is so adorable! 😍
I hope you continue your Pokémon blanket! I want to make one after I finish the Shinobu Haori
The Pokemon blanket will continue, I've just fallen really behind with it. Hopefully, the next square with be out in the next week or two.
I would love to see a full Step-by-step tutorial and pattern for this dress I would love to make myself one I love the front of the top
I'm planning to make a tutorial for the top section, though I can't say when it will be out.
Cute
Lovely top Love the combination of red and white :) Now I want to make a mushroom top ahaha
If you make a tutorial for the top that'd be very appreciated 🤍🧡
That's one of the videos I plan to make early-ish this year :).
❤❤❤❤ lavanda ❤❤❤❤❤
🍄❤
Im looking at this and wanting to pair it with the tiktok mushroom skirt and a mushroom hat and skirt and shoes because why not lol
Edit: i realize i said skirt twice sorry this just makes me happy
slay
Do you have a ballpark of how much of each color you used?
I think I used almost three skeins of the red lionbrand yarn which is about 690m and for the white yarn my best estimate would be about 450m.
Does anyone have a pattern for a dress thats this shape i wanna make sure i have the right yardage of yarn before i start making this
