This is by far the most down to earth video I’ve watched on UA-cam, you guys barely knew what was said yet conversation and eating/drinking went on so nicely.
Thats what its all about, a universal connection with anyone as long as people open up to eachother. I found drinking on small chairs in the sunshine to be a familiar setting to something I would do back home in Newcastle. Really grateful to these guys, took us under their wing and really looked after us. Appreciate the kind words
This was amazing! You are the first UA-camr who has had traditional alcohol with local people I have seen. This is the best way to experience a local culture in a country. Good job!
I saw the pure peace and love in you video. What a great moment when you sit down drinking and chatting with these two old gentlemen. Wish you the best in your journey.
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt Don't pretend this is just about nationality! Bad behavior knows no borders; every country has individuals who think they have the right to be rude anywhere. Clearly, you're not condemning such behavior; you're merely using it as a pretext to target China. Such a low and clumsy tactic, akin to a barking but cowardly dog venting its frustration.
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt Those people who did that in the UK are nasty (not there, based on what I saw through the videos). To your question, Yes, for example, on 11pm 8th May 2012, right in Beijing, a British man tried to rape a girl in the open air and fight with whoever tried to stop him. This was on the local news every where, but I guess you don't know this as it is too shame to be reported in the UK? There are nasty people everywhere, no country or nation or race is special. I've been in UK for over 14 years. To be honest, I received harassment far more than people from any country can receive in China. However, I still see UK as a lovely and great country. This is our difference~
Watched a lot of china visiting videos after the 144 hours visa-free policy. I have to say this video is the excectly TOP1. You guys are the first youtuber who put perspective on the cityzen's real daily life and the culture communication. I didn't expect you learned a little bit Chinese, when I heared you say "chi le ma" (吃了吗/have you eaten)I was shocked. Most foreigners don't know this is the real way chinese say hi. As a Beijinger, I would like to tell you that if Chinese people, especially Beijingers, take the initiative to invite you to eat and drink, including smoking, it means that they think you are friends, do not give them money, because this kind of behavior will be regarded as contemptuous of them or you do not want to treat them as friends. I can assure you that these two Beijing uncles have far more assets than you can imagine. Hutong housing prices are the most expensive in China, far more than London and Tokyo.

The reason why Beijing Hutong only has public toilets is because these buildings were built over the past few hundred years. During the Ming and Qing dynasties in China, there were no underground sewage pipes. Now these buildings are all protected buildings and cannot be demolished or rebuilt on a large scale, so underground sewage pipes cannot be installed. They can only serve the public in the form of public toilets
Theese Hutong houses were renovated with sewer and water toilet these days. These houses are very expensive now because of the location. The owners rent part of the rooms out with expensive rent. They live comfortable with the rent mincome.
@@Mingo101AtTiktok apparently you aint local, ppl still live in hutong who are locals aint rich at all. they dont own the house nor the land, the gov owns them due to some history. Even if they own their houses, as long as it's not the whole yard, it isn't worth as much as a 2b flat in beijing. as hutong house sizes are generally quite small per family.
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt We Chinese also hate those who harass Chinese people who play the piano. They bring shame to us. They destroy our international image. But they are only a small minority. They cannot represent all Chinese people. Please don't say this over and over again under each reply.
Your encounter with two Beijing gentlemen is both humorous and touching, which is evidence that people from different languages and cultures around the world can coexist peacefully. Today I saw that You have already opened a Bilibili account, followed you on both UA-cam and Bilibili. wish you a pleasant journey.😊
The scene of drinking together really feels warm and sincere. When the blogger mentioned giving some money for vegetables to the elderly man, he excitedly stood up and said there was no need for money! Indeed, the elderly man already considers the blogger a true friend, a guest. There is no need for guests to pay! This scene is truly heartwarming! I hope our friendship lasts long, and I also hope you can spread our values correctly, letting more people understand the Chinese people! Thank you!
Since you took the train to Xinjiang for over 30 hours, you have had a nickname Iron Butt Couple in China. Most Chinese people are unwilling to choose such a long and sleepless train, and I admire your courage.
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt They can't represent all Chinese people. Every country has bad people. Every country also has good people. Their bad people just make up a small part of this country.
Chinese are hard bargainers in business but when treating guests including casual acquaintances, they are warm and exceedingly generous. Despite language difficulty on each side, the friendship is sincere and true.
They really appreciate meeting you. They trying to tell you that come back again to look for them and they will forever welcome you again. I love this video so much. Its madness people so friendly and kind.
I just finished the Pakistan series and moved on to this video. I found myself absolutely fascinated with Pakistan but I couldn’t stop smiling watching you two converse and share drinks and food with the two men from Beijing. ❤❤ much love from the US!
I have seen many bloggers who travel to China, and almost none of them take the initiative to communicate and greet locals with enthusiasm like you do. However, you have done so and received positive responses. I am Chinese, and what I want to say is that the vast majority of Chinese people are enthusiastic. When you need any help, you can boldly try to communicate with people and seek help
My hats off to you, I've never seen someone do what you just did, striking up a friendship with the local Chinese with rudimentary language skills but building a deep respect and friendship. If there are more people like you, there is still hope for peace to our world.
Welcome to travel to China again. I really like your travel videos. You can visit more natural scenery, such as the Five Mountains, East Great Mountain: Tài Shān, West Great Mountain: Huà Shān, South Great Mountain: Héng Shān, North Great Mountain: Héng Shān, Center Great Mountain: Sōng Shān.
Amazing video mate! Not many others making content like this in China, so amazing how you are able to converse in mandarin in such a short period of time 😵
As a Cantonese, I was impressed by the hospitality of a grandma in Hutong when I first visited Beijing in 2015. She showed me how to get to my hostel, quite enthusiastically, as she put it, 'This is who we are, as the people of Hutong.'
Fantastic experience. drinking baijiu with Beijing local people in hutong. This man is a TikTok influencer (Chinese version called douyin) and he asked if you are a content creator like him
Thank you ahah just me and the old boy influencing the world. Although I'm not sure how good my influencing is when I just like to sit in the sun, eat and drink with new friends
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vthe just means that you are a funking arrogant rubbish who just like the people you mentioned, go back to your grave you foolish idiot
Absolutely most incredible video about foreigners traveling in Beijing. You and the two old men did not understand each other most of the time but you did understand each other in certain way based on kindness from both sides. And the sip drinking is not mandatory of Beijing or China but just considered as a healthy way of drinking to not getting drunk too fast.
I smiled ear to ear watching you enjoy food and drinks with the senior residents and each understand the other only by 20%. They were so caring that they watched out for you and didn’t want you to get blind drunk. Unlike other societies where the guys would snicker and think it’s comical to get you wasted/inebriated. Bravo to you and Paige for interacting in this way with the locals - I bet they will have good stories to tell their friends & families for a looooooon time!
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt Finally, the only thing I know about playing the piano is that any trivial matter about the Chinese people will be exploited and exaggerated by the Western media into something unforgivable. The Western media will always look at China with a magnifying glass, but they will always be saints! For example, during the Palestinian genocide, the mainstream Western media suddenly became blind; haha, typical hypocritical double standards of the West!
Hi Jack, I'm a student from Beijing and I saw your video on Bilibili. Your comprehension skills are brilliant! I hope you have experienced the enthusiasm of the Chinese people. We may meet again in China? All the best to you. :)
Hey! Thanks for coming over from Bilibili to watch the video!! We have been having the best time in China, hopefully when we can back nexts we may meet! ❤️
How interesting it is that obviously you two speak different languages, your Chinese level can not understand his meaning, the old man also does not understand English, but you are in a variety of misunderstandings produced friendship, it shows that as long as the positive attitude, human beings do not need language can understand each other and become good friends! This is peaceful social relations! It's so touching❤
You are lucky enough to experience a Beijing local's lunch. Peanut rice, pig's tongue, and meat jelly are often eaten by men in Beijing for drinks. Although they don't speak the same language, one of them brought out peanut rice from home, and the other one bought pork tongue and meat jelly from the neighborhood especially for you. I'm glad my fellow Beijingers showed their passion. I hope your video will show more people the real China.
Welcome to China, because you are friendly, you gain friendliness. These two old people are from Beijing. The price of houses here is 200,000 RMB per square meter.

This is indeed a relatively common drinking scene and habit in China. When drinking is paired with delicious dishes, it can not only add flavor, but also make the drinking process more rich and enjoyable. While tasting delicious food, chatting while drinking tea and enjoying the relaxed and leisurely atmosphere, this way also reflects the integration of Chinese food culture and social culture. Different regions may also have their own characteristic side dishes and drinking customs, all of which have unique charm.
Awesome man. The local peoples so friendly and kind. They told you to drink slowly do not drink straight away. Just sip it and enjoy the side dishes while u sip. They told u they own their own hse and they dont pay the rent. Thats Jelly dessert. He said if u dont like the Jelly dessert juz leave it and eat the meat or nuts. I can’t believe it the people are so friendly there. I have never been to China. Hope to visit someday. You spoke chinese pretty good the pronunciation . Yes you are right. This is so interesting. Going to a strange country and having a party while chatting, hahaha. They are very worried that you will get drunk. Drinking slowly and savoring snacks slowly is a relaxed life. It is worth mentioning that the hutongs there have a history of 700 years at the earliest, and many houses are cultural relics that cannot be demolished or destroyed, so they look very old. You can understand it as civilians living near Buckingham Palace, but they were not driven away and their houses were not purchased by capitalists.

Let me clarify one thing, the gentlemen in the Hutong are not short of money. If you know the value of their house, you will be shocked. In addition, in China, giving money directly is embarrassing, usually treating younger generations or their employees. If you want to express gratitude, you should send gifts.

Different regions may also have their own characteristic side dishes and drinking customs, all of which have unique charm.

this is the most interesting China travel UA-cam video I have watched. you know how to start a party with some locals not much understanding each other.
I saw your video on Bilibili and thought it was amazing! Although everyone's language is not very fluent, your interaction is so interesting! Welcome to come to China to play, and thank you for presenting the real China to the world.❤❤❤
Amazing true reality of china! I just found your channel and can't wait to continue the journey with you. Well done from Canada
你是最棒的博主,特别喜欢你们旅游时入乡随俗,理解和融入当地文化的旅行态度!
Absolutely incredible video. So real hutong life and hutong people. ❤❤
My fav video so far!
Absolutely Amazing and special experience, friendly old man and traditional drink and food, unbelievable.thanks for sharing
You can understand it as civilians living near Buckingham Palace, but they were not driven away and their houses were not purchased by capitalists.
hahah, they were very cautious but I learned slowly!
These guys are local Beijingners. They own the place, so no rent. These houses are not to be sold. Can be rented or given back to the government and get a few apartments in the suburbs.
Oh wow I didn’t know that!
one snall old house = 1 million dollar.
@@JackAynsleyTravel 就是因为经济发展了,导致他们资产多现金少,如果卖了老房子给政府就会获得很多现金,但是买不起当地的房子,需要去更远的地方才可能买得起房子。It is because of the economic development that they have more assets and less cash. If they sell their old houses to the government, they will get a lot of cash, but they cannot afford to buy a local house, and they need to go farther to buy a house.
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt There are also British people who came to China to sell drugs and were sentenced to death for violating Chinese law.
Finally a new video. Was waiting anxiously
I hope you enjoyed it!
@@JackAynsleyTravel Obviously, I watched every second of your vlogs.
Hey! Jack it's nice to see you in Beijing, China where, I'd love to live forever because of lovely mixture of its culture and advanced lifestyle. I never been there but I wish to be because of their jolly friendly behavior. I've been mismarried by its building structures, people's face values, weather, street life and the most, their extremely hospitality.
Live long, God Bless you both.
M. Nadeem
Hi Nadeem! Thank you for watching! We’ve loved our time in china so far, people are so friendly here!
Thx for your kind words to China!
love your videos jack,China is absolutely nice country, please make more video about China.love yall
I will for sure!
The 2 Backstreet Boys are absolutely wonderful people. Thanks for bringing us this fantastic video. The uncle who drank with you guys makes videos on Douyin which is the Chinese (original) version of TikTok. He said to you the best English cigarette is triple 5 State Express. The crunchy bean you ate is fried broad bean.
Hey guys, nice to see you have another video up, currently watching this now and at 10:00 minutes in, are you and Paige acting like you're holding onto a handrail LOL? Funny stuff! Your India and Pakistan vlogs were wicked and my partner and I love watching the videos. All the best on your travels and be safe ❤
Hahahaha we do it all the time, has us in stitches
I had to rewind to see if i saw what i thought i saw!!😂😂
Haha.. so funny. I too had to rewind to see it.
Hi Jack & Paige, we really enjoyed your video! And I was very positively surprised that you know the Chinese drinking etiquette of lowering your glass than the others’ by clinking! So did the two “dàye” in this video😄 I really appreciate the interest you’ve taken in getting to know such things.
Just offering them money in this case might seem a little arrogant, but no worries, we all know that you meant it in a good way. Maybe for the next time you could give people some small stuff like a souvenir from the UK if you happen to have any. Cheers laotie! ❤
Your video is really good! You have photographed the real old Beijingers, China welcomes you! Good luck to you!
Thank you pal, I hope you enjoy the rest of our series from China!
Thanks!
Thank you so so much, that is really kind
Great video .many great things to see in china but the hospitality of the people and your own interaction with them will always stay in your memories
Let me clarify one thing, the gentlemen in the Hutong are not short of money. If you know the value of their house, you will be shocked.
In addition, in China, giving money directly is embarrassing, usually treating younger generations or their employees. If you want to express gratitude, you should send gifts.
Thank you for letting me know. This was our first day in china so still getting to learn the culture, but in the end, these uncles taught us a lot and was a very valuable first day. I don't think any other people arrive in beijing, go to the southern Hutongs and drink with the locals in the street on their first day 😅
@@JackAynsleyTravel But what's interesting is that sometimes you should express your willingness to pay first, which not only shows your understanding of etiquette but also allows the host to refuse you, thus better fulfilling their desire to show hospitality.😂
Be chill with theses guests who came from a completely different culture, they has just started and keen to learn it.
