The area surrounding the Sky Tower, called 339 due to its height of 339 meters. And also a place bustling with bars that only open at night so that’s why there’re no people at day time
So much fun to watch this video, the way how you describe about food, talking to people and your reactions while experiencing new things just so funny (in a good way). Love it. BTW, Chinese people don't usually greet each other with 你好,吃了吗/hello, have you eaten. We just greet with 你好/hello, or just greet with 吃过了吗/吃了吗/have you eaten. Normally at about meal time people will ask 吃过了吗 as a way to greet, if not nearby meal time, chinese don't greet that way either.
Thank you very much! We tried so many new foods in this video, and we love trying new things! I will remember that for next time, thank you! I love learning more about the Chinese language!
In the past, China was very poor, and it was a luxury for people to have a full meal, so they would use "Have you eaten?" to wish people a good life. But now that people are well-off and having enough food is no longer a problem, this way of greeting has been gradually abandoned.
@@JackAynsleyTravel I went to college in Chengdu. I think "Have you eaten?" is often used by people in northern China to say hello, but people in Chengdu don't say hello like this.

Thanks for the great video! Just want to point out that "chi le ma" as "how are you" does not always work in all parts of China. It's mainly used in northern part of the country and is not actually a thing in south west especially Chengdu. That's why you don't get very good response from people and younger generation will probably be confused if they hear that😂 Simply say "ni hao" works all the time.
Hi, Jack, have you eaten? This greeting is generally used in the north, but in the south, this greeting is generally not spoken. When people hear this sentence, they feel a little strange. In fact, you only need to say, 你好, that's enough.

Bro,When I go to Beijing to talk to strangers, I won't use this phrase. It is a very old way of greeting. Some elderly people in northern China use it occasionally, but young people nowadays basically don't use it.

delicious “hao chi” (好吃) is the standard way to pronounce it. But in our sichuan dialect, it’s “hao ci”. So when people speak mandarin with that accent, it might confuse you a bit.
You are so kind, enjoy your trip in China. Chengdu is the most leisurely city in China. The people who is playing Majiang said that she don’t understand what you spoke 😊
Really enjoy your videos. At the end of this video, you ordered the famous spicy chicken. Aka laziji. Quite excellent description about the spicy flavor. Hope you enjoy your trip in China.
In Chinese, if you want to say the number of something (e.g. three oranges), you always add a quantifier. Two oranges is not “san chengzi” but “san ge chengzi”. 三个橙子. Different things have different quantifier(e.g. a cow is “yi tou niu”, a fish is “yi tiao yu”, a chair is “yi ba yizi”), but generally for a tourist coming to China, you can use “ge” for any type of situation. (This usage is grammatically wrong, especially you are a Chinese learner. But for tourists it’s fine.) For instance when you buy the skewers, you can say “yi ge niurou, yi ge yangrou” instead of “yi niurou, yi yangrou”(which means one beef and one lamb). The absence of a quantifier creates substantial difficulty when communicating in Chinese. Some dialects, e.g. Beijing dialect, do omit quantifiers. But a listener can understand the meaning by context and tones. If you are having a Chinese conversation without context, tones, and roughly correct grammar, it is difficult for the listeners to understand. From an amateur in linguistics.

Here is a suggestion for greeting Chinese people. 'che le ma' is usually spoken by the old generation like 70+ senior people, it's more like 'how do you do' ,and I guess few English people say how do you do nowadays. Now Chinese people usually just say 'Ni Hao Ma', that's it.

Great video and nice vibes from the locals.

Us too! We would love to live in Chengdu!
Just curious, were you drunk after drink Baijiu with Beijing locals. It was some unique experience for foreigners. Like your video mate. Keep it up!
Yeah haha, I drank over half the bottle🤣 but my Beijing friend said he wouldn’t even be drunk after the whole bottle🤣 how much would you have a to drink haha
The fried rice portion is huge and it looks delicious. The huge portion reminds me of the same experiences I have had in Pakistani and Indian restaurants in the UK. Thank you for this video, enjoyed watching it.
Thank you for watching, the rice was so good!
welcome to my hometown! I live around that area, everything looks so familiar to me
Are you Chinese?
Oh amazing! Have you tried the chicken from that restaurant? It was so good I still dream about it now 🤤
非常感谢参观中国, 看你的视频让人愉悦,每天吃饭的时候会看
Hi Jack. can't believe your hotel is right across the street from my house, the first thing I see when I open the video the tall building across the street is my house, it makes me miss Chengdu so much! The restaurant where you guys had the spicy chicken is very authentic Sichuan food, we often go there as a family, that waitress lady was just trying to help you share the rice, no need to feel embarrassed. Looking forward to your new work, already following!
hahaha, i am also here now
I like you were trying to speak Chinese, good for you.
You are the only one traveler who can explore China in a good way Nd with a positivity ❤❤
Looks like you really enjoyed watching his ear cleaned.
I just say it how it is pal, if somethings good I will sing it's praises and Chengdu was one of our favourite cities in the world!

@@JackAynsleyTravel You were definitely deceived by the shaver. I’m sure he just wanted to ask you for 3rmb, but when you said 30rmb, he changed his mind and said 30rmb.
@@qiuloveye The price tag on the BBQ says 15, and of course it should be 30 for two skewers
Thanks for the great video!
Just want to point out that "chi le ma" as "how are you" does not always work in all parts of China. It's mainly used in northern part of the country and is not actually a thing in south west especially Chengdu. That's why you don't get very good response from people and younger generation will probably be confused if they hear that😂
Simply say "ni hao" works all the time.
Hi, Jack, have you eaten? This greeting is generally used in the north, but in the south, this greeting is generally not spoken. When people hear this sentence, they feel a little strange. In fact, you only need to say, 你好, that's enough.
Actually mostly used in Beijing
@@quietlivesNot only in Beijing, but also in a lot of places. The only problem is to say HAVE YOU EATEN to strangers. People usually don’t salute to strangers in China.
Hey! Thank you for the advise, I am always learning so I will try to remember this when I am not in Beijing! If you went to Beijing would you use this phrase?
Bro,When I go to Beijing to talk to strangers, I won't use this phrase. It is a very old way of greeting. Some elderly people in northern China use it occasionally, but young people nowadays basically don't use it.
Ni hao is ok

The TV tower you went to used to have a revolving restaurant, now it's closed. But at the bottom of the tower is the best nightclub in the whole of Southwest China, and it's only after dark that the place gets packed. It's full of young, drunken people.
Oh that’s amazing! When did that close, we would have loved to have visited! We should have gone back at night time to see what the area was like! Have you been to that nightclub before?
@@JackAynsleyTravel The night clubs in Chengdu/Chongqing/Changsha are for more fun than ones back in London, just go and enjoy.
@@JackAynsleyTravel
Chengdu is also famous for its bar culture.
In fact, there are three streets near the TV tower that are very well known, so you can look them up on a map.
According to my personal opinion:
For people over 35, you can go to Bine Eyes Brige(九眼桥), which is right on the river, next to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, so there are a lot of amateur singers or undeclared singers working there. It's a live beer bar and lounge bar.
The 25 to 35 year old crowd can go to Lan Kwai Fong(成都兰桂坊), which is actually right across the river from the Nine Eyes Bridge(九眼桥), and is very avant-garde in style and for all types of people. There are nightclubs, clubs, cocktail bars, lounges, Chinese beer bars, and places to watch soccer games (there are even bars for the LGBT community, the most famous being Revolution Cocktail).
The under 30 crowd prefers to go to 339, the same TV tower you've been to. Unfortunately the revolving restaurant has been closed for two years now, but there are a very large number of bars on the ground level, locally called: “Chengdu 339”(成都339), which skews towards a much younger crowd.
I'm getting older and the last time I was there was 6 years ago. I just remember like BEARBAR: Er Ma (贰麻酒馆), Peach(TAO桃), CLUB:SPACE , DANCECLUB , MOOP , PLAYHOUSE , DNA……

delicious “hao chi” (好吃) is the standard way to pronounce it. But in our sichuan dialect, it’s “hao ci”. So when people speak mandarin with that accent, it might confuse you a bit.
Ah yes that did confused me definitely haha. I'm sure as we travel through the country I will face more dilemmas like this!
Welcome to China again next time. Chinese people are hospitable and we love peace. Every region has delicious food, waiting for your exploration
我们对于陌生人的问候方式一般不会使用“你吃了吗”这个句式。这个句式通常只用在亲近的熟人面前,而且时间通常是在饭点。

Another thing that is very unfortunate is that the old man's shave only costs $3. He's not an honest man, but the video is great and I love how real this is documented, that's life, isn't it? This lesson teaches you to use a calculator when asking for prices, Roman numerals are universal :D
