Yes. These missions give your tablet more access to contours and stuff. I haven't completed the fish finder yet either. But I noticed after I think it was the first set of missions, I got the contours on the tablet. I haven't tested to see if it translates to other locations though. It will be awesome if it does though.
The whale mission you do it for wanting merchants yeah gives you the tablet and it gives you the bar graphics and better things that you can do in the game

btw its not 50 cm ( 20 inch ) as you said at 3:55 , the 50 means 50 meters ( 150 ft )
