This is an speaker for users with a more audiophile taste, it does not have an impressive bass like the various JBL's and UE's. Mine sounds great and you can actually hear other parts of the music instead of mainly bass. I can recommend this speaker.

excellent review. If you have young hearing, JBL or bose or something. If you are older, with matured ears, B&O type sound for sure, even if you cant afford B&O. Young people I think are terribly over sensitive to higher frequencies and some hate it. Some even feel pain. Being fairly old, I cannot stand the constant thump thump of bass heavy equipment.
Good point. I can't bear the thump of heavy bass either and I have matured ears (nice phrase). Not many reviewers, young or old(er) make that point re: differences in hearing.
wow. im 21 and i kinda hate highs. to my ears they hit sharper, and feel like they hurt my ear health. i appreciate highs but sometime i cant enjoy them how i want and thats what really pisses me off..... until i listen to higher quality audio with crazy sound stage like b&o. all my life ive been told to watch my volume by folks like you. with beo products i dont even have to do that. i like to hear everything. crystal clear crisp highs, vast mids, and bass you can feel but hear too. maybe im spoiled, coming up with higher quality. my ears may be immature... i love an eq like :**----__ , but if im listening for quality or casually, its b&o anyday. ive only bought used but ill head to b&o la jolla soon to get a taste of the cutting edge for myself.
Many thanks for your comprehensive informative and unbiased review. I have this speaker and I agree with your points about its characteristics. I like the Explore not as a compromise of what it is not but more like for what it is designed for. Great clarity decent mids and good accuracy yet still enough bass that can be fine tuned through the Beosound app . Subbed
I bought this speaker about 6 weeks ago to use in my camper van. This review has nailed it. Straight out of the box it sounds awful but use the app and move to about 4 O’clock and it sounds fairly decent. Best with jazz and acoustic also good for podcasts etc, but be aware some music genres do sound terrible. It won’t go loud but I don’t want it to as it’s a personal Bluetooth speaker. Looks fantastic and too nice to throw about. Would I give it back? During the first couple of days it would have been a yes, but now I’ve grown to love it, mainly down to its great looks more than it’s sound quality.
I dropped my 1st gen A1 from about 1,5 meters. It got some minor dents but still works fine these 2-3 years later. I still woulnd't reccomend dropping any speaker, and maybe i was lucky but i have had a good experince with the A1 also being very portable. If you really want big sound on the go but don't want to carry around a Soundboks then i can reccomend the Beolit 17 or 20. They're great speakers with good battery life and outstanding performance. I've had many people comment on the big and well controlled sound of the beolit 17.
I own Explore already for 2 months, absolutely satisfied with this buy. If u dont wanna listen to overboost cheap sounding bass from JBL and other brands like this. This is best choice, yes its bass arent so strong, and right after listening on my B&O H4 earphone - i think i hear no basses at all from Explore. But try to play some Jazz and u will see so big difference in sound purity of this Explore and any other speaker JBL or any price comparable speaker. Minus? Rubber at the bottom gets often sticky of a dirt and dust and i am missing another one to pair them in more rooms.
The speaker is small but yet its audiophile quality as it should. For those saying it lacks bass of course it would its a bluetooth speaker and its intended to be a party speaker it's meant for easy listening..
Bass bass bass. That's all 90% of people think about in terms of music. That's because they only listen to hip hop and electronic music. But there are still 10% of people who still want to listen to actual music, played with actual musical instruments such as piano, guitar, acoustic drums and etc.
It’s designed as a small portable speaker for outdoor use you can sit it in a metre of water for 30 mins ! It’s built like a hand grenade and made to last . I listened to it and it’s not gonna sound as the A1 or Beloit 20 then again it’s designed for ramblers , rock climbers , campers and outdoor use . For what it’s designed for it’s excellent But it’s a niche bit of kit.
I spend my relaxing time in the bath, just ordered from Peter Tyson after your review. Thank you. I have been with B&O last 35 years enjoying every day with their products! For garden parties beoplay A9 & BL20.

Kind of unrelated, but in hindsight, I’m surprised Apple bought out beats instead of B&O. B&O just seems like it would b more of Apple’s thing than beats, being off higher quality by far than beats. 360° sound? I bought this for my daughter for Xmas. As soon as it got set up, myself and my daughter were immediately disappointed. As for the 360° sound lol.
