  • As I was pulling old videos for the intro to this one, I came across one labelled "2,500 subscriber bonus" or something. And it was only about 4-5 years ago and now it's 10x that number. It's just a number, and it doesn't really mean anything more than any other number, but it's still staggering and very much appreciated.
    *GIVEAWAY*
To enter the giveaway contest this time there are three things involved:
    1. Give this video a Like
    2. Subscribe to my channel (if you're not already)
    3. Leave a comment with what video/tune it was that made you subscribe or stick around
    Contest Rules:
    1. The contest will run for 2 weeks, concluding with a random drawing from among the comments on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023.
    2. The winner will be contacted through UA-cam. If you have an active channel that allows for channel comments I will post one to your channel; if not, I will reply to your comment on this video. Either way, I will ask you to contact me via email, social media, or my website to send me a shipping address where I can send the package.
    3. If the winner does not respond within one week I will make another random selection and repeat the process.
    4. UA-cam is not a sponsor of this contest and the winner will be required to release UA-cam from any and all liability related to this contest.
    5. Privacy: the only information obtained from the contest winner will be a name and shipping address and that information will only be used to ship the package. That information will not be retained once the package is sent.

Last September my wife bought me a Walton's D whistle in Mystic Connecticut, so naturally I went to UA-cam to figure out how to play it. I spent some time scrubbing through videos and eventually I ended up on your Star of Munster lesson. Even though I had no tin whistle experience before this (I played ragtime guitar and cajun fiddle, totally ignorant to traditional Irish music), I could tell you played very authentically, unlike most others on UA-cam, and I immediately, really loved that tune, but I couldn't yet play it, so I decided to watch your beginner lessons. Afterwards, I learned this very song, The Lilting Banshee, made sure I could play it all the way through, and then I went more into learning ornaments, also with the help of your videos. I haven't used any other teachers or online tuition, save maybe for reading some old forum posts, except your videos, and even though I can learn most songs I ear, I still use your videos to find great new (to me) tunes to figure out! Now, I'm looking to pick up the pipes or flute once I feel really satisfied with my whistle skills!

I’m glad your channel is growing! You deserve it. One things that I really appreciate about your channel is the effort you put into presentation of content. I’m in my mid 30s and have a fair amount of experience playing other instruments. When I started to learn, I had a hard time finding someone who would teach to the musician. You have a great knack for teaching to both the new learner, and the person who has been playing for years. I’m by no means an expert yet, but I find that I rewatch your videos, and often learn new things about songs I’ve learned from you before. I have found over the past year that playing the Tin Whistle has brought me much more joy than I was expecting. I play daily, often just making things up, but in those moment’s I’m really happy. I think your educational work here has been a real source of that joy. Giveaway or no giveaway, I hope you read this. You are a fantastic teacher and musician. Thanks for the effort you put into doing this well.

The slide show brought back some happy memories, especially the one with the Irish flag on the wall behind you. My introduction to taps, cuts, rolls, slides and crans came through precisely those vids. I believe the first couple of reels I learned were Green Mountain and Silver Spear. So thanks a million! And congrats on 25K!

Well Sean, despite your preference for Sligo wear, (I'm from Mayo), I just really enjoy the simple way you have in explaining tunes, working through whistle differences and your honesty when it comes to teaching, learning and playing. As a new starter @48yrs of age (2nd lesson only last week) I'm quickly getting sucked down the rabbit hole that is Irish music and while there is a believed simplicity to the whistle, I'm learning it is so much more. And thankfully, from your videos, I'm learning it's accessible...Other videos are convoluted or tiresome to listen to so that's why I'm here to hear...😄

A year ago I watched Outlander and felt in love with Scotish and Irish folk music. I bought basic Feadóg tin whistle, downloaded "Stóras na Fideig" learning book and played till I learned the basics. Tin whistles are not so common in Poland, so I gained much attention while playing with friends. I started searching for more and found your channel. Don't remember specific video, but I subscribed immediately. Thank you for great content!

A couple of months ago I bought a Generation whistle so that I could get back into the tin whistle after a 15 year break! (I learned in school as a child. A very common experience here in Ireland). I sought out a tutorial for Sí Bheag Sí Mhór and happened upon yours. A deep dive into your channel revealed you’ve got so much high quality content so I stuck around. I’ve also been recommending your channel to learners who buy tin whistles from the music store I work in.

Same experience here, only it's been 8ish years for me since primary school. I've really grown a new appreciation for it since. When you're taught it with a bunch of other squealing children, it's hard to see the beauty of the instrument in those moments Hahaha.

Congrats on the 25 000 followers!
I started following your content around the same time you were making a transition toward a more studio-like setup. Just discovered that it's been 12 years now.. wow! I thought it'd be more like seven or eight.
There weren't too many in-depth breakdowns / tune tutorials then, and your lessons would be hugely helpful to me when I was starting out.
The channel has come a long way since then, with the quality of the content progressively getting higher and higher, and although now I mostly learn by ear, I still appreciate you sharing your thoughts / process around other trad-adjacent topics like gear, practice routines, accompanying songs, whistle comparisons etc.
Thank you for all the good work and excited to see what comes next!

I started with good ol' 5 Tips for Beginners and kept up the journey from there. Lessons are very well explained and at a good level for new players

Congrats ! Advanced technical videos (such as improvisation and variations) made me subscribe to your channel...from France! Good job for the tin whistle which is the instrument with the best ratio simplicity/sophistication (in my humble opinion).

Congrats! 25k is way, WAY more than most youtube creators ever hit, and you've earned every one! My first video of yours that I watched, was your Cooley's Reel ornaments guide. Here's to 25k more in the coming years!
