  • I'd like to think I used my pandemic time wisely. No, I didn't exercise or learn any new skills, but I did spend a lot of time working on new music with the band. And now that there's a light at the end of the tunnel we're starting to get gigs booked and we needed some new gear.

In the band I mainly play with, we were in a bit of a transition/experiment phase with our stage gear ... and then Covid-19 struck. For years we've used dB Opera active speakers, big dB active bass boxes and four monitor speakers (I forget the make) tied into a big(ish) Allen & Heath mixer (ZED-22FX). We were experimenting with the Behringer Air XR18, but hadn't come to a conclusion before the pandemic lockdown.
Of course there's the huge, heavy, flightcase containing loads of XLR, electrical and other cables, and the flight case full of microphones (a mixture of EV and Shure) and stand bags etc. Oh, and a lighting rig when we feel like it :-D
Even with festival or club gigs were there is a PA provided, I will take my own stands and microphones for my melodeons (small diatonic button accordion). Many years ago we did a gig somewhere where in desperation the stage crew grabbed drum mic stands and drum mics (!) to use on my melodeon. From then on we've always carried two small (Hercules) mic stands and instrument mics (2xShure 57 Beta) to every gig.
Getting a vocal mic set up for my whistles has not been a problem.
You're probably very aware of this, but as a trad/folk band we present a horrifying prospect to many venue/festival stage crews who are often used to a very different kind of band :-D
    1. Bodhran and vocals.
    2. Melodeons and whistles (tries to avoid any vocalism).
    3. Violin, Mandolin, Hurdy Gurdy, Vocals.
    4. Violin, Recorder, Bassoon.
    5. Guitar, Electric guitar, Mandola, Bouzouki, Flute, Vocals, occasional whistle and very occasional Great Highland Bagpipes.
    6. Guitar, 12 string guitar, Mandolin, backing vocals.
Number 6 left the band during Covid-19 and needs to be replaced, probably with a guitar and bass player if possible (Edit: actually, he came back, which made me happy).
For smaller (mostly dance) gigs away from "the band" I have a Bose L1 (with a bass box) that works really well for a couple of musicians and a caller. It's great for dances at weddings, community events etc.

It's been a good feeling to dig the box of cables and microphones out of the back of the closet and start loading up my gig bag again.

Feels like there's light at the end of the tunnel at last, I'll be playing at a folk festival in Norfolk this coming weekend; first gig for over 15 months.

Cool video. Fun stuff. Can I get a link for the flute stand? Been having a difficult time finding stands that work with a conical bore flute. I had one made but it only has one peg. Looking for something for multiple flutes. Thanks!

He explains it here, including an adaptation: ua-cam.com/video/FilIifmtmGk/v-deo.html
It's a Hercules "Flute, Piccolo and Clarinet Stand." We use Hercules stands in the main band I play with, they're good quality.

@@andrewwigglesworth3030 this helps a lot. Thank you so much! Bah. Still needs some level of handiness. Was hoping for an out of the box solution.

Yep Andrew's got it - I've yet to find anything out-of-the-box that will support a wooden flute properly so I had to but out the PVC and some tools haha
