Starting My New Workspace - Basic additions
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- This quick workbench update just shows off a few really basic additions to the workshop. Sorry it's not a bit more exciting, but it's been a pretty rough road so far and just securing the basics has been honestly the best I can do.
Thank you to everyone for your support, it is still making a huge difference, I wish I could repay you all with more positive and interesting updates in the hobby space. There is still a lot going on behind the scenes, and I'm not sure I'm ready to start addressing that in videos just yet, which is probably why they're so short lately too...
I do have many plans for content on the channel, and I hope to be able to build back up to weekly project content for everyone. Creating (and particularly creating content and interacting with the community) has been a passion, and source of positivity for me for a few years now, and I'm a little frustrated to not to be able to give it my time right now. But currently I'm still trying to adapt to what is essentially a complete reset of my life in almost every respect. Not much is permanent it seems.
Thank you for watching. Take care and all the best to you all.
Shawn.
I appreciate everyone for watching, commenting, subscribing and donating, it means more to me than I can even begin to explain. Given what we're up against for the foreseeable future, your support will be impacting my family for a very long time. Bless you all.

Good stuff mate. A man needs a hobby to keep him sane, especially during times of stress. Keep on keeping on bro. A couple of bags of insulation batts for the walls might help with the heat, can’t have ridiculously overpriced paints ruined. Good luck mate, enjoy painting those new minis.
Thanks Eric!
Its looking great. Much more space in this Garage for much more Projects.
Good to See your vid and to See you'll be strong.
Greetings from germany at the north sea
Thank you mate. It's a start. I appreciate the comment. It's been bloody hot here in East Coast Australia...but it looks like rain now, which means we're on flood watch. Stay safe everyone!
Good to see you fighting back Shawn! 👍
Thanks mate, I'm trying. I hope you're doing well, drop me a message on discord one day.
You could put some XPS foam against the wall as insulation against the heat... but then you'd probably be tempted to use that as terrain building material ;) Hang in there mate :)
Cheers mate. I'll do what I can, but at the end of the day...this shed has no windows...🙄
@@RFDHobby It's a Linux shed then? XD SCNR
@@RFDHobby the only thing I've come to find out about metal sheds are: (they are SO DAMN hot) if you can cover the outside with something like camo netting or similar. Just as long as you have a few inches between the exterior wall and the "covering" it is enough to block the sun from beaming on it so hard. It was the only thing we could do in Iraq to try and cool down our cans, and worked pretty well. Gotta do what ya gotta do with limited money, supplies and access to supplies.
Great to see it's coming together again for you
Cheers. It's a little bit slow going right now, but I've got all I need to get started I think. Take care mate.
Nice to see it coming together. For me a needed addition is extra lights, like those that get atached to the edge with a clamp and have a boom arm (new one I got has a circle of LEDs around a large magnifying lense)
That's exactly what I need. The lighting in the shed is actually not terrible, and I do have a couple of small led lights for desktop filming, but they aren't exactly the best. Going to hunt for something like this tonight. Thank you for watching and commenting mate, I appreciate the suggestion!
@@RFDHobby If you have time, try looking around in garage sales, pawn shops or in 2nd hand websites. I already had a normal one and the "new" one with a magnifying glass was from a beauty salon that closed nearby.
In this video the lighting was good, but I guess it was due to daylight entering via windows or ceiling. During night time or even overcast winter days, extra light is more than welcome
for lights, the most economical (at least in Canada) option I found was the stanard IKEA 'Tertial' desk lamp and daylight bulbs from the local DIY store (I'm guessing the AUS equivalent would be Bunnings)
No surrender
I wish you the absolute best! It's good to see you are making progress! I would suggest a good chair. Both for comfort and to keep your back healthy as long as possible as you work. And perhaps a fan to help with the terrible heat?
Thanks mate, a decent chair is next on the list for sure, I've been up there working a bit more lately and there's no way you can work for long without one :). Thanks for watching and commenting, take care and all the best.
Parabellum Gaming, I vow that I will never illegally 3D print any of your figures✋🏻 Glad to see gaming companies supporting the culture that makes them what they are!
Glad to see things are getting there. It's a slow process. And you're doing it all upside down with them scary ass Aussie bugs!?!?! 😝😂 Stay strong💪🏻 looking bitchin' !!
Thanks mate. It's getting there.
I'm not upside down, you're upside down.
Seems like a solid start to the workshop! My only thought is maybe some rudimentary power tools if they arent available from friends/family. Glad you're still doing ok after the fire! I dont think heat should do any permanent damage any paints as long as the pigment is still in there. Its usually possible buy paint medium from an artstore and restore it
Thank you for the comment. I've started to clean up some bottles and I'll be trying out the paints shortly, I expect they'll be ok, as you said, some medium and a good mix, and hopefully we can save them. Take care and all the best.
Glad to see you making a comeback keep up the good work
Commenting & sharing in the hopes this will get the algorithm to pick up. I can't think of anything much to say other than keep going, can't wait to see the future projects!!
Thank you so much. Take care mate.
@@RFDHobby you too 👍
So glad to see your video!! Was just wondering yesterday how you and your family are doing.
Thank you Annie. I'm trying to keep the videos fairly focues on the hobby side of things, but behind the scenes there is still a lot to adapt too and figure out (both short and long term), that the progress in the hobby space is a lacking 😔. I really appreciate you watching the video, and the comment. Take care and all the best.
Shawn.
Good stuff, looking forward to whatever you create. That tip on the steel ruler from the square...brilliant. Now I will be on the lookout for a cheap square. Cheers!
Thanks man. It's still only small updates at the moment while I get the rest of my life back in order, but I've just started on a new terrain project at last, and I'm looking forward to rebuilding my terrain collection. Should be able to do more regular project videos once I get everything settled down.
Feth yea man
Keep up the good work! You got this!
Thank you!
Im glad to see things are looking up for you!
Thank you. Small steps right now, but it's enough to make a start. Take care mate.
You too
So glad to see you making such progress. I hope the rest of your life is getting back to normal even faster than the crafting. Wishing absolutely all the best
Thank you so much. It's fairly small progress in the hobby space right now while I try to get the rest of my life back in order. It's surprising how something like this affects literally every part of life in some way. But I'm hoping everything settles down soon and I can get back to making regular project videos again. thank you for the comment. All the best mate.
I hope you and your family are doing well and hope you had a good Christmas and a wonderful new year!! Just remember one step at a time!!!! Praying for you!!!
Thank you so much Sarah. We are doing well, and it was a very nice christmas and new year. All the best for the new year to you and your family.
Hey Shawn, good to see you slowly but surely coming back from disaster. I'd love to send you a care package with supplies I don't have a need for anymore--I can even through in an old airbrush. Let me know if I can send this to you to help get you back on your feet mate, and looking forward to the next update
Hey Ben, thank you so much mate, I really appreciate the offer. You can get in touch with my at rfdhobby@gmail.com . The updates are fairly small and not very exciting at the moment, I'm still just trying to get a lot of my life organised again, so my workshop hasn't got the love it deserves yet. I have a new terrain video in the works now though, finally :)
Talk soon.
Hi! You have an interesting channel. You are doing great. WoW! I wish you prosperity and success! God bless you and all your family! 🍎🍏🍐🍑🍒 W0W! Like! Very nice! Nice! Cool!
Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate it. Take care and all the best to you!
I was made aware of your channel through the recommendations page after the fire you had, and I just wanted to pass along my best wishes to you and your family.
I'll absolutely be following along on your journey and am very glad to see you're back up on your feet and started to do what you love again. Slowly but surely you'll be right back where you were and then some my friend.
Take care!
Thank you so much Dylan, I really appreciate it mate. It has been a bit of an emotional ride since the fire, but I'm just trying to get things setup here, so I can comfortably just start making new terrain projects, rebuilding my collection, and playing with new toys. :) Take care and all the best mate.
Happy to see you starting to build up on what you had! I know you feel is slow going (as you said) but starting to go up is always positive!! Cheers and Happy New Year!
I also second insulation. Paint, liquids, and soft solids never seem to like changing temps. Whether insulate the wall section or even better if you can find a insulated cabinet that you can attempt to control the temp on better to store those items.
Thank you Lizzie. It is very much about taking on small goals and just trying to move forward in some way each day, it'll add up, and I'll find my groove again along the way I'm sure.
I don't know why I didn't consider a cabinet for the paints. Since moving to the other side of the shed I'm not subjected to nearly as much heat radiating from the walls when it's really hot, and I have put up some insulation and cardboard layers to sheild me in some ways, but there's only so much I can do in a windowless metal box out in a paddock :). The cabinet is the perfect solution though, thank you so much for your comment.
You should just accept that you are a phoenix.
Maybe it's possible changing to working at night when it's that hot?
Thank you mate. Yeah, I've been doing late nights up there this week to avoid the heat, and sleeping during the day. It's still hot, but it's nowhere near as bad.
2pm here now, and it's currently 38.7 degrees.
It is good to see you making progress! Perhaps you need to put the bench on wheels so you can easily move it to the coolest spot to work or into the doorway to catch a breeze. You could probably rig up a roof vent and extractor fan quite easily or cover the exposed external metal with hessian or desert camo net. Line the inside with a few sheets of ply (you can get away with sterling board/ OSB in a dry climate it is cheaper) in your work area if you can it will help keep out heat and give you somewhere to hang stuff. Even in England I line metal buildings to stop stuff melting in summer it must be unbearable in Australia. An alternative would be to build yourself a little tent inside with tarps that is small enough to easily heat or cool with a mobile AC you only need a 6x6 box.
Thanks for the suggestions Eric. I'm doing the best I can with this bloody heat haha, there is extractor fans and even a lining on the roof, but in this heat, with no windows, I think I'm always going to struggle a little in these temps. I've started trying to work nights for now, and I'm going to see if I can set up some kind of 'room' so I can try to control the temp a bit for a more long term solution. I appreciate the suggestions, you'll probably see some of these in future videos. Take care and all the best mate.
Really happy to see you set up and able to work again, your videos have taught me so much so I'm genuinely happy to see you back on your feet. It's inspirational
Thank you so much mate. It's been a tough ride for a while now, but I'm still pushing along as best I can. I've got lots more to share, so hopefully things will settle and allow me to post more regularly again. Cheers for the support, and good luck with your projects!
My first thought was that it was a new building, and I didn't see any insulation, and sure enough, it gave you trouble.
Good to see things coming together.
Thanks for the comment. It is quite new, and while there are extractor fans and even lining on the roof, there's not much I can do in 35+ degree temps haha. But I'm working around it the best I can, and things are slowly moving forward here. Cheers mate.
Awesome to see you getting back on your feet. I think tweaking things along the way to make incremental improvements to your workplace is a smart way to go.
Thanks Damien, it's really easy to get carried away trying to get a perfect overall setup before you start actually doing anything, a lot of times it's better to just start with what you have, see what you actually need, and spend your money as you go. That way you don't have $1000 worth of gear getting used every couple of months, when you could have $1000 worth of gear being used every day. So it might be a bit slow going here for a little while :). Cheers mate.
That's incredibly heartwarming to see Parabellum send you those kits. The new space looks great also, btw.
Thanks Kevin. I haven't worked with Parabellum before, so I was surprised to recieve their email. Such a great team of people. The space is constantly changing, I can't seem to get it to 'feel right' haha, I've changed it up a little again since this video, and hopefully I found the sweet spot this time. Thanks for the comment mate.
glad to see you're coming back on your feet! wish you the best man!
Thank you mate, slowly but surely getting back to a workshop space. All the best to you!
Jeez, that’s terrible, so sorry for your losses. Glad to see that you are turning the corner, and nicely at that
Thank you mate, I really appreciate the comment. All the best to you.
Comment for the algorithm. Keep at it! Stay cool-ish
Thank you very much, I appreciate it. Take care and all the best to you.
Thanks for the update. Glad to see you are keeping up.
Thanks Tommy, it's still pretty slow progress, but I am getting there. I appreciate the comment mate.
Awww yeah, it's all coming together!
Thanks mate! Slowly, but I'm getting there.
if you ever need some ideas for projects elden ring is a cool game with lots of diverse terrains
Thank you for the suggestion, I love games for inspiration. I've taken some ideas from Farcry previously :). Cheers.
Glad to see you back, all the best for the future buddy👍
Thank you Richard.
Akro-mils plastic cabinets. You can use them for both legos and unpainted minis.
I'm extremely glad to see your doing well Shawn, keep fighting on
I came from ur video on Wonder World. I’m officially a subber now! Oh, I see a VW Beetle! My mom and dad got me a 1978 Super Beetle for HS graduation in 1985! Keep up the good work❤
Thank you for subbing and checking out the video. The VW is old, and could use a little work, but you can't kill that thing, it still runs fine :). Take care and all the best.
@@RFDHobby Lol. I know. They sure have longevity!❤️
Hey Shawn. Nice going. It's a start. I'm just about to launch a budget hobby channel with tips and reviews. I've slowly accrued stuff over the last 6 months to give me a solid start and did all of my purchasing online. One of the nicest things I got was a box of Meeden airbrush paints. You can get a box of 57 paints for $89 off Amazon AU. You can use them as normal mini paints as well, they work great. I also invested in some artist grade acrylics which with some flow improver and a little water thin down nicely. Got some oil paints to make my own washes, just dilute with white spirits. Also got some mica powders and pastels, alcohol and acrylic inks (to make my own contrast paints) and some paint pens. Apart from that I invested in some lighting, a desk magnifier, a few different brush sets (artists brushes and precision brushes), an airbrush with compressor, all types of glue, milliput, resin (with dyes), hobby tools, magnets, a digital microscope (for up close detailing), a wet palette, mini electric drill and various containers and other gear. It took me a while to get everything but I just bought a bit each week. When you're up and running let me know. Love to do a Collab with you. I'm in Brisbane. Here's a link to my channel if you're interested. youtube.com/@budgettabletopwargaming
Thank you for the comment mate. It really sounds like you've got yourself a great setup to start. I hope you do some videos on the your prep work, I've been wanting to try out contrast paints for ages, but investing in a new set of paints was always a tough thing for me to do. But making my own sounds like an awesome project, you'll have to let me know how that goes (or do a video). I'm just up the road about an hour out of brisbane, so feel free to shoot me an email or let me know your discord and we can have a chat, I'm probably a long way from a colab, but I'll help out in anyway i can. rfdhobby@gmail.com
Cheers mate.
@@RFDHobby Hey Shawn. Thanks for the reply. Firstly, I'm sure you'll be able to salvage some of the paints that were in the fire. You can get empty bottles on eBay dirt cheap. I bought 2 lots of fifty for $25 each. I also bought some mixing balls to go in them. Secondly, contrast or speed paints are basically the same as washes, perhaps being just a tad thicker. You can use a good acrylic ink for your colour and then add it to some acrylic medium that's been thinned down with distilled water and had some a few flow improver drops added to it. The flow improver can be bought or you can use glycerine. Thirdly, you don't need a heap of stuff to get started again. Why not tailor your videos to your situation? Use your limitations to your advantage. Paint a mini using only a limited number of paints (say 5). Paint using artist acrylics or do washes with a cheap set of oil paints. I just purchased a heap of stuff from Riot Art & Craft online. They had a 75% off sale. Got paints for $2 a tube, soft pastel sets in earth tones (great for basing) for $2, a heap of grass flocking and other scenic products for $5 each. Precision paint brushes for $2 each. Heap of stuff available. The sale is still on at riot.com.au/ . Hope some of this helps. The first video I'll be doing for my channel is an unboxing of a massive Drakerys Kickstarter lot I bought off eBay. $220 for an all in lot worth $900 Australian. It's a tabletop skirmish game like Warhammer. Apart from occasional unboxings I'll mainly be focusing on budget hobby tips, tools and supply reviews, painting tutorials and terrain builds. All budget friendly of course. I'll keep you informed on what's going on.
[Smoke-reactive overhead fire-sprinklers, maybe! Not trying to be a d¡ck, but some back-up preventative measures for zero repeat bringing the house down!😬]
Suggesting protective stuff is not a dick move at any time in my opinion. No overhead sprinklers, but I have a fire extinguisher and blanket :). Given my living situation is temporary for the foreseeable future, it's probably the best I can do for now. Thank you for watching and comment mate. Take care.
@@RFDHobby In the future you might look at storing all your stuff in some kind of fire safe containers/cabinets? Depends on the price of course, and unlikely to ever happen again, but when you lose a source of income and joy like this it can be a big blow.
👍
So glad to see your getting everything set up bud!!! Im currently working on five videos right now haha. I also got scammed pretty good. My family ordered some more Hobby tools for me for my christmas present and well... needless to say the only thing that got delivered was the airbrush cleaning kit. The paint set never came, the airbrush kit never came nor did the two MDF paint racks. I literally just argued with the website for the last week and a half and finally got the refunds in last night. Turning that into a video all on its own. Can't wait for you to finally see my videos!! Cheers bud!
Thank you mate. Sorry to hear about your troubles with the tools, hopefully you get some new gear sorted quickly. Sounds like a good topic for a video though, it's always helpful to know places that aren't genuine, or at the least have shitty customer service. Good luck with the videos. Cheers.
@@RFDHobby Yeah the whole thing has finally been dealt with and is over. I got the couple items that were ordered after I fought and argued and shown proof multiple times and finally got the refunds. But i was planning on making a video out of if. I got screen grabs of everything and the emails. Even got the email from the Logistics company that was listed as the shipping company being used that stated what was in one of the boxes and where the two shipments were actually going, no where near where i live lol. so I was going to tell that story and then end it with some unboxings of the stuff i did get lol. But as fate would have it, its been a really hectic month so I havent been able to work on my videos as much as i wanted to and get them done. but it is what it is!! :)
I made some terrain from ordinary styrofoam sheeting a few years ago. It started warping so I ended up using it against the garage wall as insulation. It works well enough for Adelaide weather, so perhaps you could hunt around for old styrofoam packing to insulate your shed.
Thanks Kay, I've started to do this now, the cardboard is ok, but foam will be much better. Just need to move into Autumn already :) thanks for the comment.
@@RFDHobby I hope it goes well for you. PS: you might be able to disguise it as castle walls or something.
All the best to you!
and you. Thanks.
One day at a time. You got this! 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you so much for your comment, it is very much just trying to push myself forward in some small way on the days where I don't feel I can do anything, eventually it'll add up and I'll find my mojo again along the way.
Take care and all the best Cerise.

Good to see you getting set up! Sorry to say it took the fire to discover you when another creator Boylei hobby time posted about it and linked your Kickstarter. But I’ve seen many of your previous vids now and looking forward to seeing what you do next!
Thank you very much. The progress is a little slow at the moment as I try to get everything in life sorted out again, so my time in the workshop is still a bit limited, but I'm starting to work on a new video project at last. Thank you again, take care and all the best.
