    BAR WIDTH!!! Please test bar width effect on aero drag. There's virtually no real data anywhere on the internet. A detailed test in the same three positions as this test. Multiple riders with 44cm to 38cm bars. Rumor has it there's big gains to be had going narrower. Let's get some real data...

    come on. nobody would race in the drops as he does at 3:39.. you clearly should have done a aero racy drop position too

    What about riding in the drops in an aero position?

    • @eddytjhia1131

      surely more faster probably 10 watt less than aero hood

      Would have been great to test this as well, as to me the drops are more about being aero than the hoods. Just sayin'...

      Thrash'O'Meter I feel more faster too, when you took aero position with bend elbow on the drop, especially when you look at your front bit dangerous but fast haha

      Riding on the hoods in an aero position is far more comfortable and thus sustainable for long periods of time, compared with riding on the drop bars in an aero tuck. I sit on my hoods for 90% of a 3 hour ride, in an aero tuck. The 10% is broken up in to hill sprints, standing up, and downhills where I will tuck even further on the drops.

    • @tmlvr176
      @tmlvr176 6 років тому +1

      Pollex Cristi I slightly disagree with you, as for me riding in the drops is actually more comfortable than riding in an aero tuck on the hoods... This position in the drop is more easily sustainable for my arms than having my elbows at 90° (and I have been professionally fitted on my bike). Maybe a matter of our own preference...

    How much more aero are narrower bars, eg 38 vs 42. And when going narrower how much do you have to lower your bars so they don’t push you further up or should you maintain the height but get a longer stem to maintain your back angle? Thanks for these informative tests.

    Really love these comparison videos - Thanks to all at CW!
    Would love to see a vid comparing the power required to maintain (say) 45 KPH between different bikes in a range like Trek's Emonda vs Domane vs Madone or Canyon's Endurace vs Ultimate vs Aeroad. This could give people an idea of the benefits of upgrading from a more modest mount before shelling out the big bucks. Thanks again Ollie et al.

    Great video. I know I have the aero of a dump truck so every little bit helps. It is nice to have a blend or ability to go comfort or aero when I want.

    Nice! It would be nice to also know these same numbers comparing to a drops aero position. So how does that compare to hoods aero? I'd imagine you can get lower with your upper body on the drops in aero position there, how does that compare?

    Lots of people asking: "what about riding aero in the drops". Forgot the source (GCN?) but from what I remember the aero advantage is minimal while making the riding position very uncomfortable and hard to sustain over long period of time.

    So many of the modern "lightweight" bikes, such as the Tarmac SL6, Cervelo R5, and Canyon Ultimate CF SLX have subtle aero features in their tube shapes even when they are not full on aero bikes. Would you guys be able to test those types of bikes against a... lets say Scott Foil, to see if there is a point going to a full blown aero bike or if these "aero optimized" lightweight bikes gets you 99% of the way there? Thanks!

    • @dan110024

      Interesting point. It also comes down to how much power you personally can sustain in such a position as our oxygen intake and power output drops at extreme angles. It'd be nice to have money and time to optimise a position for yourself.

    It is all about front area where rider hits air and lower position means lower surfaca of air attack and power needed is proportional to this area . To get less power needed at higher position you need improove Cda by using aero shield I used in my custom bike . Some photos in my today Strava activity while testing custom chainrings and bars www.strava.com/activities/1384749842

    Why did you not test bent arms (aero) on the drops? who rides on the drops with there arms dead straight?

    • @johnmorrison7171
      @johnmorrison7171 6 років тому

      Ok, I'll bite. So at 45 kph / 350 watts you have your elbows straight? I was commenting on this particular test which is set up around competition speeds, not on general comfort riding. You are right, it is a very uncomfortable position to maintain but getting aero is normally pretty horrible in terms of comfort.

  • @DaveIsTheBestMan
    @DaveIsTheBestMan 6 років тому +1

    Should have tested aero position on the drops as well. The argument about the shape the arms make in each position is irrelevant, as getting your body lower in an aero position is more important.

      Way to expensive - The 55 mm carbon rims on my caad12 cost less than $100 each. Spoke count and aero spokes are more significant than a fraction difference in rim shape. If you get NACA shape rims, wheels will be bad on yaw.

    • @dan110024

    • @testblustacks5799

      Actually cost slightly more than $100 ~ $110 each. Cheap Chinese import from a company called Winow on Alibaba. After 10k km and a pot hole that would have wrecked steel rims everything still good.

      It's practically impossible to get good, repeatable data when testing on open roads when the wind is always going to be a variable. The methodology they've used is pretty much as good as it gets. CW are doing some great work with their testing for these videos.

    There is a few issues with the data. Firstly none of the tests show 45kph some as low as 39kph. Secondly the venge does 43kph at 287W whereas the foil is 41.4kph at 287W so how is it considered the fastest bike....

    Anyone can try these tests for themselves by finding a long hill and freewheeling down in the different positions. Take note of speeds at different points on the hill to assess the different effects of their position on the speed of the bike.
    And it can be done with different wheelsets, aero bike, skin suit versus cycling shorts and jersey, helmet, etc. Or you could just try going faster through spending time training rather than time carrying out daft tests. 😂😂😂

    • @Hexsense

      that could means your bar is a bit high actually.
      New thought of deep drop use aero on hood as their most aero position, while L-bend in drop is too low that is unsustainable. The reason they do this is to have drop very low and position in the greatest place for tight corner/control/sprint rather than make it high just for Horizontal forearm in drop position.
