i am on my hands and knees PRAISING your immaculate taste for not loving frieda mcfadden!!! (uh oh my hater mask is off too!!🤺🤺🤺) i read The Teacher this year and i had to DNF it because of all the reasons you mentioned i got the exact same vibes (and the crazy glorification of misogyny and eating disorders in The Teacher?? like???). I vowed never to read her work again after that because not a SINGLE good time was had by me reading it. i genuinely dont know HOW she is this popular her book literally made me turn away from mystery/thriller for a while because it left a bad taste in my mouth Also love that you enjoyed Check&Mate it's actually the only Ali Hazelwood book i haven't read yet but i do own it so i might move that up the tbr. Honestly Ali Hazelwoods best book by FAR (in my humble opinion) is Love Theoretically, but if you start with that then the others might not seems as good in comparison so maybe end with that if you want to save the best for last? 😛
Oh no that sounds awful 😭 I just knew they would all be bad after reading that one… 😶🌫️ sorryyyyy! OMG you have to read Check & Mate! I l’ve heard Love Theoretically is the best so I probably will save it for last 🤭 thanks for the tip
13:26 I appreciated the onagainoffagain friends who also had their own challenges and priorities. And this was refreshingly not a book where there was a sassy gay man there just to validate what a queen the protagonist is and make margaritas.
I feel the exact same way about Freida McFadden! Perfectly put. But gonna need that Ali Hazelwood binge video for suuuree, excited for both of us to read Bride 🧛♀️🐺🖤
I definitely go through spells with genres too. I tend to go all in on a genre and then get burned out. I'm nervous I'm getting close to that point with thrillers.
So fun to hear your thoughts on Check & Mate! I haven't thought about this one in a while, but adding it to my list! Also super excited to hear your thoughts on the books you selected for your June TBR
i feel you so hard on thrillers - i used to LOVE that genre and now am just not interested at all! i wish i could read something that makes me feel like gone girl again :(
Might I recommend the author Alice Feeney? Some of her books are frustratingly easy to guess plot twists to but it does give you a weirdly satisfying combination of fun and gut-wrenching that I’ve never experienced before in a thriller.
I totally relate about romances, not my fave either but for some reason I keep trying them and then wondering why I even read romance in the first place LOL 🤣 I did read Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez and I think that was a pretty solid romance so I hope you enjoy it! I'm glad that you liked the woman in me, I love Britney too! I listened to the audiobook not too long ago and enjoyed it, Michelle Williams was phenomenal as the narrator.
@@marginsofmarisa I have that book hold at the library and can’t wait to get my hands on it! then all I need is a pool and maybe a fruity drink to kickstart the summer 🍹
I had the same feeling about the Britney Spears memoir. 😊 I’ll be reading The Housemaid in September. I’ve only read The Locked Door by Frieda is it was ok. I’m hoping The Housemaid to get me more excited to read from her. 🤞🏽
You’ll have to let me know how they compare 🤔 I’ve heard Never Lie is good but I’m not sure I’ll be a fan based on the quality of writing I saw in The Housemaid
Immediately subbed! So glad I just stumbled upon your channel that almost matches my tastes and overall relatable!! I'm not the biggest romance reader either, although I was hugely invested back then until coming out as aroace recently. I actually thought The Housemaid was engaging and fantastic! But I totally understand where you are coming from, I loved how you described everything from the writing to characters hilariously 🤣. I've read other three of her books both of which are titled ''The Coworker'', ''One By One'', and ''Never Lie'' (which I DNF'd, cause it was pointless and boring). Nevertheless, I have a few other Freida's books on my tbr that I'm excited to read in the near future!
Omg thank you so much ☺️🫶 glad you’re here! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed The Housemaid even tho it wasn’t my fav 🫣 you’ll have to let me know what you think of the other ones on your tbr so I know if they’re worth checking out
Oh noo sorry you didn’t enjoy the housemaid!! I personally really liked it but I think the second book is really better. The third book just came out and I haven’t picked it up yet but I’m really hoping it’s great as well
Okay i don’t know how I have never heard of Life an Death by Stephanie Meyer. I like the idea of gender swapping of books because we already know the story of Twilight but being able to read it from a different perspective is so interesting! Ah, I loved the Housemaid by Freida but she is a hit or miss for some people. I like the listen to her stories as audiobooks while i work on things and multitask. I’m so happy you loved Check & mate. I LOVED it SO MUCH!!!! It was my first book by Ali Hazelwood and it’s so cute!!
I hope I didn’t offend you with my hater vibe!! I try not to be super negative about books because everyone has their own preferences and needs… I was just on one the day I filmed this 😅 I definitely see how it could be a hit for some people, and maybe I would have enjoyed it more had I listened to it as an audiobook 🤔 Literally SPRINTING 🏃♀️💨 to your Ali Hazelwood vlog rn
I have committed to reading Twilight (only book 1) in September, i am not excited but i promised 😂. I have not had a great time with the few thrillers i habe read the last year 🤔. Looking forward to hear what you think Bride, thats another one i have down for September Great video ❤
OMG, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Twilight 👀 I have a feeling it won’t be a new fav buuuut… you never know! I’m on the lookout for a good thriller so I’ll let you know when I finally find one (& my thoughts on Bride) 💛

@@adriennee6577 I totally get that-I’m not the biggest YA reader either these days. As far as I know, Check & Mate is her only YA book. Compared to other YA books, I didn’t find the writing to be cringy. There are definitely certain aspects in there meant to “appeal to the youth” that might be off putting if you’re fully against that, but I don’t think her other books are like that! I’ve only read The Love Hypothesis & I enjoyed it. If you do end up reading one, lmk what you think :-)

Right, so many romance books have their standard cast of characters! It’s exciting to see something new

Yes, I think you described it perfectly! I try to mix up genres every other book or so bc I don’t want to get burnt out quickly (not always easy tho)

14:54 if you want a really interesting memoir, Tom Felton.
I love the idea of romances. I love romantic films and tv shows but I’ve never read a good romance book, sadly.

It’s at the top of my fall tbr this year! 😈
0:17 I’m here on my first day of hearing about you because I genuinely loved Check and Mate UNTIL THE STUPID FREAKING ENDING. So I’m curious.
Oooo 😯 what didn’t you like about it, the ambiguity? I’m a sucker for books with open endings but I can see why you wouldn’t like that
They got to the crucial minute and skipped ahead to a time stamp in the video. For crying out loud.
😭 I love your shirt!
Lowkey I’m a little disappointed Charlie isn’t gender swapped too. I mean female chief of police? C’monnnnnnn.
Right!! I would have enjoyed seeing how that affected his character smh
5:07 just did not get into this book because it’s no less of a weird book with different gender identity.
