We use Shasta Daisies to teach our kids/grandkids about OSMOSIS!! 😂 They love to cut them and put food coloring in the vase water. Very cheerful and educational flowers. 🤎

Mother nature is magical. I have tens of thousands of Shasta Daisies on my acreage and no one planted any of them, nor do I water them, The universe is just magical. Also , separate area and sometimes interspersed with the daisies , are thousands of tiny yellow poppies! Love them all. They are all jusr a magical gift. I do nothing but enjoy them. Here in Washington State

Hi Julia K!! 👋👋 Thank you sooooo much for saying that! So made us both smile. 😊😊 That sounds really fun that you have a new Shasta daisy plant and also have seeds. As long as you are keeping the seeds consistently moist, growing them at an optimum temperature of 65-75 F degrees (18-23C), and were planted at the right soil depth (on the soil surface and gently pressed into the soil so they stay put), you should have few problems growing them. Some species might need a cold treatment (vernalization), so be sure to check the seed label. We haven't tried rooting Shasta daisy stem cuttings yet, but you have spurred our interest and it's definitely on our radar now. 😉😮 Hope that helps and have fun growing your new Shasta daisy plants! Your daisies are beautiful. I’ve learned a lot from your video. I’ve been growing daisies for years in my yard and I just water them and that’s all. Yikes! Right! I had no idea they need more water and fertilizer . Deadheading them! Ive never heard any of this. I will be applying these steps to my daisies. I’m so happy that I landed on this video. I really love Shasta Daisies! I personally have Alaska, Becky, Banana Cream, Cher, Belgian Lace. and oh la la spider, and 1 or 2 possibly unnamed varieties. There have definitely been some advancements and improvements over some of the earlier types especially in the last 20 years. Excellent content guys! See ya Saturday.
I watched this because I just bought the seeds and started a pod of them in my Aero Garden. They are starting to sprout. I can't wait for the flowers. I might just keep them in a flower pot until the frost is over next spring. I live in NY State.

Hey Jeff! 👋 Thank you for watching and great question! We have flower stems that don't have any upcoming new flowers lower on the stem, too. When this happens, Sean says this is a great way to shape and form your whole plant by still removing that old flower by following down the stem to cut just above a leaf coming off that stem. My Shastas are in my front garden in the back of the boarder…..too far back for me to get to in mid-summer when everything has gone crazy and is waist tall or more. So, bottom line, I basically planted and forgot them about 7-8 years ago and they are doing great without me!!! They are surrounded by foxglove, summer phlox. and beebalm. They typically outlast all those neighbors and take up the competition with the near by black eyed susans and the fall colored coneflowers come September and all the way into October!! They are a great staple/ anchor plant in my jammed packed garden and I’m happy to have them! Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it. ❤ 🌼

Bulletproof.I'm in central Alberta and a low zone 3 .Cold.I've had a patch of these for over a decade and do brutal separation of the rhizomes to start other patches.Very drought hardy( looks like our evolving hot/dry summers are here for awhile now).A bit of water in spring but they do less foliage and flower on a taller,stronger stem if not fertilized much and no water once they get going. Not many perennials you can get nearly all growing season profuse blooming with very little mtce.*I have many rabbits in the hood and they do not bother at all.My plots only get approx.6 hrs.sun on them ,then shade.Mine stink and do not attract much for pollinators either?
Just found this video thank you. I think mine may have gotten to much water because it bloomed prolifically and looked gorgeous then died back and leaves and stems either got to much water or has a fungus I can’t tell. What zone are you in and how much do you water and how do you water.
I just planted Shasta Daisies in a new full sun garden in 7b North Alabama. We are using a fan sprayer every other day for a total of 30-45 minutes. Do you think it’s the right amount of water for our 95° days?
I didn’t realize they form such a big clump. I added a Becky Shasta Daisy to my small flower bed at the front porch but I planted it only about 9 inches from the wall. Now after watching your video I think it might be too close. I don’t want to stress it again by moving right now, but do you think I should move it further away from the wall next year?

Becky Shasta Daisies can get up to 24-36 inches wide, so definitely space accordingly with this mature growth size in mind. We would say move/transplant this plant in the fall when temperatures are cooler and there is less overall stress to this perennial plant. Hope that helps and enjoy your Becky Shasta daisy! 😉👍
My Shasta Daisies are not doing well. They are not blooming much and the blooms that I get look like they need deadheading. The plants look a little wilted. I have been spraying them with a detergent mixture to kill any aphids etc. I have them on a drip system every other day for an hour. I am wondering if that is the reason for them not thriving.
Mine are just going into their 2nd Season, this year I should see Blooms! I matched mine up with Painted Daisies and a Species Gladiolus called Peacock Orchids under a young Burr Oak. :)

Hi @cherylramsey3409!! 👋🏼👋🏼 Thank you for watching and for saying that. 😊😊 Sorry to hear about your challenges to grow lavender in your garden. Our lavender do great here, even with all the moisture we get during the fall and spring months. We grow them in sandy, rocky soil so the chance of rot and death is really low. If we didn't grow them in really sandy soil, they wouldn't make it for sure. Thank you for noticing our crocosmia! To get it to grow straight and tall, we make sure it gets enough full sun (at least 6 straight hours or more) so it doesn't stretch or get too floppy. We also stake it just before it flowers because those flowers will make each stem top-heavy and they will fall right over. Hi there! Good question. You can cut it back down to about 2-3 inches above the leaves, or even just below the leaves, so you don't see them, BUT you don't have to cut them back until next spring if you want to leave some seeds for birds to eat and some cover for other critters to overwinter in. You might consider adding warnings to your presentations about "enemies" of a particular plant. For instance, I planted a 4 in shasta daisy in my front garden. I went to water it the next day.....rabbits had eaten almost every green piece of it. Hence, when first planted, daisies should be surrounded by "keep out" barriers against critters that find them delicious. Same with Coreopsis ...planted same time and place...next morning...Cor-ee NOPE sis.
@Merzui-kg8ds It’s not that way for everyone so maybe isn’t common enough for a warning. I have lots of Shasta daisies and lots of bunnies and nothing is being eaten.
I bought a daisy plant at my local grocery store.They keep wilting and look like their dying. Any suggestions ? I’ve been watering and keep them by a window.
I did not do anything. I direct sowed them and kept the soil moist. Mine did not bloom the first year. 4 years later they need to be split and moved around the yard! They are prolific. They have cared for themselves.
Thanks. I just found some at Home Depot called Daisy May. Are they rabbit and deer resistant? I keep most of my plants in containers in the east facing back yard to avoid deer, but then they would get only direct sun from 12-4 in Atlanta (hot). I grow a lot of annuals (petunias, verbena, butterfly bushes and perennial salvias there, so you think it will be fine too. If I am wanting full sun and west facing, the front yard but then the deer. Appreciate any advice.
Hi Sheila! 👋👋 You can plant them right now, in the fall season, as they are starting slow down their growth and should be done flowering. When you transplant any plant in the fall, be sure that you do it on a day (or a whole week) that isn't too warm or cold, say anywhere from 40 to 70 degrees. This is so a plant being transplanted won't have added temperature stress ontop of the transplant stress of losing part of its root system and trying to get reestablished in a new spot in your garden. For your lavender plant, we are sorry to hear that it died. While compost is a good general plant growing medium for some plants, lavender tend to like more sandy, even rocky soil that has good drainage. Compost has good drainage, but it holds onto water a lot longer than a sandy soil or rocky soil would and this can lead to the roots of a lavender plant being too wet and leads to an "over-watering" situation. If you still have the compost-soil in your garden and that is the best sunny location for a lavender plant, then you can add sand (50/50 mix, or higher sand percentage than compost) to that location mixing it thoroughly with the compost to improve the soil drainage. Just make sure that the water has somewhere to drain to and away from the lavender area of your garden. Hope that helps and thank you for your question/comment! 😉😊

Wow, we are sorry to hear this. Neem Oil is shown to be somewhat effective in controlling Japanese Beetles, but not sure about Asian Beetles. You could try Neem Oil, but read the label to make sure it can be used on this specific pest. Not all Neem Oils are created the same. Also, call, text, or email your local county (province?) extension agency to see what they recommend you do, if anything. Hope that helps and keep us posted.
We have a healthy, very tall and floppy mass of Shastas in our back garden. I stake them up and deadhead them, but they have so far gotten by on mostly rain. I may up my care & see what effect it has.
When you talked about the smell, I thought of the ones I have. I found out they are Montauk Daises and they really do stink. I hat to put them out on my patio table to get them smell out of my kitchen. The other thing I noticed about the Montauk is that it doesn't even bloom till sometime in September (here in zone 6). About 5 years ago I had a whole load of Shasta's and they grew and spread for about 3 summers. Then one summer they never came up. There was no sign of them, as though they never existed. It was very strange and I can't find anyone who can tell me why. I never got around to buying any this summer but hopefully next summer.
In the spring cut them back, and you can propagate all the cuttings easily, you can cut them back to about 10 inches from the ground in spring, plant the cuttings and have many more beautiful plants that bloom that year! We love our Montauk!
My Shasta daisies bloomed beautiful about 2 foot across the top. The blooms are dying, so going into deadhead I see no new blooms forming on the healthy looking stalks. What to do? Thank you.

Do you have the variety name for the lavender growing at, 10:52? I like how compact and soft looking it is. Also, the little Campanula at 11:26. Such a vivid color. I have two volunteer daisies that are covered in aphids . I suppose they are stressed from the drought we're having. I water every day, but can't give them a deep soak. There isn't enough time in the day! The deer are bad this year. Because I water, my plants have juicy leaves. The deer ignore my neighbors yards. They don't water. The deer stand behind the fence and stomp their feet and snort at me. "Hurry up lady-we're hungry." Thanks.

I have struggled to keep Shasta's alive or coming back in my z5b. Last year I found a much shorter variety and tried it in a 3rd different location than the other's I've tried, and it actually came back and is just now blooming! The flowers are just as big as the taller ones, just only about a foot tall. Now I'm going to go check out the care of double impatiens that I noticed in the cards.
among the healthy daisy , I have stalks that have bloomed and gone dry, dead dry clear to the bottom. I did not dead head, but now really healthy stems right next to totally dead to the ground stems. what's up?
I have daisys in my yard,never planted them! I didn't know to dead head them. Ill be doing that soon as the rain stops. I have several flowering plants that have appeared in my yard. Lots of birds and bees spreading them I guess.

Our Shasta Daisies are really taking off this year here in the Western North Carolina mountains. We planted all kinds of varieties of Wildflowers on our 5 acres along the driveway path, as seed from local sources, to our home at the top of our Ridge. This is the first year the Daisies have surfaced, but we have had a wet year this year. They do like water.

I was surprised that they did well with the lavender since lavender will drown with too much water, are more drought tolerant, but Shastas need more water. Were the Shastas on a slope?
Hi @sidilicious3823! You can still deadhead your Shasta's, even if just to clean and tidy them up. If birds and other garden critters are perching or using the old flowers, you can always leave them, too.
I live in coastal town in Western Washington State. We are inundated with deer. No rabbits because the coyotes take care of that. Deer do not eat Shasta daisies. They also don’t eat rosemary, lavender, or Rhododendrons. We are very limited in what we can grow here unless you are very diligent spraying with deer repellent, if you can find a brand that works

Hi folks, another NW gardener here; I have a huge Shasta Daisey also, however, I plant with Crocosmia. The daisey bloom about two weeks before July forth, and then Crocosmia puts on it's show so the two look like fireworks on July forth.
I love your flower garden. A daisy starter plant was given to me years ago and I don't know what kind they are. They have spread a lot since I planted them. When in bloom they are beautiful but they get about 3-4 feet tall and I need to put support on them.. Another thing, they have no second bud so I cannot deadhead to keep the plant going for a longer period. There are about 6 feet crocosmia mixed with them and when in bloom it's a site to be seeing. I just wished they weren't so tall and lasted longer. However, they are in a corner of the back yard so I enjoy them while they last. Good job guys, keep up the good work!!! 👍🌼🌼🌼

You are very kind thank you. I have downloaded a plant identification app which also tells you which specific plant that you taking a picture of. But also identifies problems and solutions for each individual plant. I have all my garden flowers in pots because the soil is so poor where my house is. Apparently nearly all my plants are suffering from over watering. We have had such an enormous amount of rain over the winter, spring and summer and when, we have had the odd few days of sun, I was watering them everyday. I have subscribed to your channel and between the app and yourselves hopefully I can become a better gardener. 😊

Why do my shasta daisies grow 6 feet tall before they bloom then flop over? How do you get yours to bloom so short?

They are surrounded by foxglove, summer phlox. and beebalm. They typically outlast all those neighbors and take up the competition with the near by black eyed susans and the fall colored coneflowers come September and all the way into October!!
They are a great staple/ anchor plant in my jammed packed garden and I’m happy to have them!

Bulletproof.I'm in central Alberta and a low zone 3 .Cold.I've had a patch of these for over a decade and do brutal separation of the rhizomes to start other patches.Very drought hardy( looks like our evolving hot/dry summers are here for awhile now).A bit of water in spring but they do less foliage and flower on a taller,stronger stem if not fertilized much and no water once they get going.
Not many perennials you can get nearly all growing season profuse blooming with very little mtce.*I have many rabbits in the hood and they do not bother at all.My plots only get approx.6 hrs.sun on them ,then shade.Mine stink and do not attract much for pollinators either?
Just found this video thank you. I think mine may have gotten to much water because it bloomed prolifically and looked gorgeous then died back and leaves and stems either got to much water or has a fungus I can’t tell. What zone are you in and how much do you water and how do you water.
I just planted Shasta Daisies in a new full sun garden in 7b North Alabama. We are using a fan sprayer every other day for a total of 30-45 minutes. Do you think it’s the right amount of water for our 95° days?
I didn’t realize they form such a big clump. I added a Becky Shasta Daisy to my small flower bed at the front porch but I planted it only about 9 inches from the wall. Now after watching your video I think it might be too close. I don’t want to stress it again by moving right now, but do you think I should move it further away from the wall next year?

We would recommend definitely moving your Shasta daisy further from your wall, especially if you want to have access to the wall for any maintenance. Becky Shasta Daisies can get up to 24-36 inches wide, so definitely space accordingly with this mature growth size in mind. We would say move/transplant this plant in the fall when temperatures are cooler and there is less overall stress to this perennial plant. Hope that helps and enjoy your Becky Shasta daisy! 😉👍
My Shasta Daisies are not doing well. They are not blooming much and the blooms that I get look like they need deadheading. The plants look a little wilted. I have been spraying them with a detergent mixture to kill any aphids etc. I have them on a drip system every other day for an hour. I am wondering if that is the reason for them not thriving.
If you are cutting the stems that far down when you deadhead could you propagate those stems???

Mine are just going into their 2nd Season, this year I should see Blooms! I matched mine up with Painted Daisies and a Species Gladiolus called Peacock Orchids under a young Burr Oak. :)

Our lavender do great here, even with all the moisture we get during the fall and spring months. We grow them in sandy, rocky soil so the chance of rot and death is really low. If we didn't grow them in really sandy soil, they wouldn't make it for sure.
Thank you for noticing our crocosmia! To get it to grow straight and tall, we make sure it gets enough full sun (at least 6 straight hours or more) so it doesn't stretch or get too floppy. We also stake it just before it flowers because those flowers will make each stem top-heavy and they will fall right over. Hi there! Good question. You can cut it back down to about 2-3 inches above the leaves, or even just below the leaves, so you don't see them, BUT you don't have to cut them back until next spring if you want to leave some seeds for birds to eat and some cover for other critters to overwinter in. You might consider adding warnings to your presentations about "enemies" of a particular plant. For instance, I planted a 4 in shasta daisy in my front garden. I went to water it the next day.....rabbits had eaten almost every green piece of it. Hence, when first planted, daisies should be surrounded by "keep out" barriers against critters that find them delicious. Same with Coreopsis ...planted same time and place...next morning...Cor-ee NOPE sis.
@Merzui-kg8ds It’s not that way for everyone so maybe isn’t common enough for a warning. I have lots of Shasta daisies and lots of bunnies and nothing is being eaten.

I did not do anything. I direct sowed them and kept the soil moist. Mine did not bloom the first year. 4 years later they need to be split and moved around the yard! They are prolific. They have cared for themselves.
Thanks. I just found some at Home Depot called Daisy May. Are they rabbit and deer resistant? I keep most of my plants in containers in the east facing back yard to avoid deer, but then they would get only direct sun from 12-4 in Atlanta (hot). I grow a lot of annuals (petunias, verbena, butterfly bushes and perennial salvias there, so you think it will be fine too. If I am wanting full sun and west facing, the front yard but then the deer. Appreciate any advice.

What time of year do you plant shasta daisies? I bought lavender planted it and it died! Planted in compost don’t know why it died
Hi Sheila! 👋👋 You can plant them right now, in the fall season, as they are starting slow down their growth and should be done flowering. When you transplant any plant in the fall, be sure that you do it on a day (or a whole week) that isn't too warm or cold, say anywhere from 40 to 70 degrees. This is so a plant being transplanted won't have added temperature stress ontop of the transplant stress of losing part of its root system and trying to get reestablished in a new spot in your garden.
For your lavender plant, we are sorry to hear that it died. While compost is a good general plant growing medium for some plants, lavender tend to like more sandy, even rocky soil that has good drainage. Compost has good drainage, but it holds onto water a lot longer than a sandy soil or rocky soil would and this can lead to the roots of a lavender plant being too wet and leads to an "over-watering" situation. If you still have the compost-soil in your garden and that is the best sunny location for a lavender plant, then you can add sand (50/50 mix, or higher sand percentage than compost) to that location mixing it thoroughly with the compost to improve the soil drainage. Just make sure that the water has somewhere to drain to and away from the lavender area of your garden. Hope that helps and thank you for your question/comment! 😉😊

Wow, we are sorry to hear this. Neem Oil is shown to be somewhat effective in controlling Japanese Beetles, but not sure about Asian Beetles. You could try Neem Oil, but read the label to make sure it can be used on this specific pest. Not all Neem Oils are created the same. Also, call, text, or email your local county (province?) extension agency to see what they recommend you do, if anything. Hope that helps and keep us posted.

We have a healthy, very tall and floppy mass of Shastas in our back garden. I stake them up and deadhead them, but they have so far gotten by on mostly rain. I may up my care & see what effect it has.
When you talked about the smell, I thought of the ones I have. I found out they are Montauk Daises and they really do stink. I hat to put them out on my patio table to get them smell out of my kitchen. The other thing I noticed about the Montauk is that it doesn't even bloom till sometime in September (here in zone 6). About 5 years ago I had a whole load of Shasta's and they grew and spread for about 3 summers. Then one summer they never came up. There was no sign of them, as though they never existed. It was very strange and I can't find anyone who can tell me why. I never got around to buying any this summer but hopefully next summer.
In the spring cut them back, and you can propagate all the cuttings easily, you can cut them back to about 10 inches from the ground in spring, plant the cuttings and have many more beautiful plants that bloom that year! We love our Montauk!

Do you have the variety name for the lavender growing at, 10:52? I like how compact and soft looking it is. Also, the little Campanula at 11:26. Such a vivid color. I have two volunteer daisies that are covered in aphids . I suppose they are stressed from the drought we're having. I water every day, but can't give them a deep soak. There isn't enough time in the day! The deer are bad this year. Because I water, my plants have juicy leaves. The deer ignore my neighbors yards. They don't water. The deer stand behind the fence and stomp their feet and snort at me. "Hurry up lady-we're hungry." Thanks.

I have struggled to keep Shasta's alive or coming back in my z5b. Last year I found a much shorter variety and tried it in a 3rd different location than the other's I've tried, and it actually came back and is just now blooming! The flowers are just as big as the taller ones, just only about a foot tall. Now I'm going to go check out the care of double impatiens that I noticed in the cards.

Our Shasta Daisies are really taking off this year here in the Western North Carolina mountains. We planted all kinds of varieties of Wildflowers on our 5 acres along the driveway path, as seed from local sources, to our home at the top of our Ridge. This is the first year the Daisies have surfaced, but we have had a wet year this year. They do like water.

Hi @sidilicious3823! You can still deadhead your Shasta's, even if just to clean and tidy them up. If birds and other garden critters are perching or using the old flowers, you can always leave them, too.

I live in coastal town in Western Washington State. We are inundated with deer. No rabbits because the coyotes take care of that. Deer do not eat Shasta daisies. They also don’t eat rosemary, lavender, or Rhododendrons. We are very limited in what we can grow here unless you are very diligent spraying with deer repellent, if you can find a brand that works

Hi folks, another NW gardener here; I have a huge Shasta Daisey also, however, I plant with Crocosmia. The daisey bloom about two weeks before July forth, and then Crocosmia puts on it's show so the two look like fireworks on July forth.

Mine get damaged by a tiny little caterpillar like worms
I love your flower garden. A daisy starter plant was given to me years ago and I don't know what kind they are. They have spread a lot since I planted them. When in bloom they are beautiful but they get about 3-4 feet tall and I need to put support on them.. Another thing, they have no second bud so I cannot deadhead to keep the plant going for a longer period. There are about 6 feet crocosmia mixed with them and when in bloom it's a site to be seeing. I just wished they weren't so tall and lasted longer. However, they are in a corner of the back yard so I enjoy them while they last. Good job guys, keep up the good work!!! 👍🌼🌼🌼

You are very kind thank you. I have downloaded a plant identification app which also tells you which specific plant that you taking a picture of. But also identifies problems and solutions for each individual plant. I have all my garden flowers in pots because the soil is so poor where my house is. Apparently nearly all my plants are suffering from over watering. We have had such an enormous amount of rain over the winter, spring and summer and when, we have had the odd few days of sun, I was watering them everyday. I have subscribed to your channel and between the app and yourselves hopefully I can become a better gardener. 😊
