I'm fairly new player (little over a year) and slant alternate picking (45 degree angle) was a game changer for me. All great tips and I use them.

Looking at the opening sequence of this video , you can see that your picking is not just from the wrist. You are actually changing string by moving your arm from the shoulder, retracting your forearm/bicep to allow the plectrum to travel from the top e to the bottom e. Some Classical players do this as well.

It's easier too play with right hand when you have such brilliant left. Because if left has any strain or discomfort you can't be precise and relaxed with right .

Hi Sam! Great lesson here :D I had also a question : could you explain one of your best pentatonic lick, used several times, for example in "Sam Coulson Shred, minute 1.27 sec" ? Correct me if you already did :D Thanks and cheers from Italy

Great tips! Question... Do you change your angle of the pick or is it always slanted downward? Guys like mike Angelo batio reverse the angle back n forth.
    Thanks again !!

I think of angling the pick and pickslanting as two separate things. Think of angling as hitting the strings square on or at an angle to cut through the string with a minimal area of contact. Pickslanting is more about which direction the pick is facing to hop over the strings.
I'd say without looking closely he probably two-way pick slants as it's pretty much a necessity for some of his Gilbert-esque licks.

Hey Sam! First of all nice lesson! I really like your guitar playing and especially these pentatonic alternate picking licks. I'm currently trying to get the most basic one down: Pentatonic box 1, high e and b string, run four notes downwards then repeat. I am struggling with the inside pick after the last note of one run and the first note of the next one. I am always hitting the b string. How did you manage to go over the string? Is it a pick slant thing? Or do you really move your hand over that string at that speed?

Great tips Sam, thanks so much. Big fan of your shredding guitar playing lessons and general other stuff. Can I know where to get your music? Not the vocals infused stuff... Just the instrumentals?

    Great tips.
Question though. If you never play "on the edge of your ability", how do you get better.
I find playing on the edge, when I practice especially, gives me all kinds of new ideas.
When I back it off a bit, I become more comfortable at increasingly difficult levels.
Even performing, especially with a 2nd soloist, pushing each other over the edge leads to extraordinary moments.

Let me ask you a question, Mr Coulson:
I realize my confortable/flawless picking position seems to have a speed limit. I can't play tremolo picking in this position, for example. So, I have to change the position when I wanna play some fast run, but my "fast mode" has muting issues and is not so clean. I want to know if your fast picking comes from your confortable position developed, or you figured out some stance that you could potencially play fast and then developed that position until you master it?
I hope I made myself clear. This doubt is killing me and stopping me to improve for years!
Thank you very much. I'm your fan! Keep rocking!

Sam, you and George Lynch both hang several fingers straight out, instead of bunching them all up into a fist. Do you do this deliberately?

But, you don't talk about the most critical thing. I can follow all your tips at slow speed. But when I speed up, it all falls apart. Practicing slow is not helping me get faster. So, there is some missing step. I have a feeling it's the fret hand coordination.

    • @deeforty
      @deeforty 2 роки тому

Fretting hand strength and stamina are the hardest thing about 2 note per string pentatonics, i find sitting just trying to sound those licks with just my left hand isolated helps massively.

There are tons of videos how how to alternate pick everyone has a different story what I personally feel is all about how much you practice nothing else, there nothing like technique is practice ...
