MuOS is minimalist and needs tinkering depending on your preferences, but it's fast and feature-rich. For a gift to someone else I'd set up Knulli because it's prettier, but for myself I want every last bit of power from these chips I can get. In the end, you can't really go wrong with either. Both are phenomenal.
@@pavichokcheI want to say around 15 seconds? It's still better than stock, but MuOS is faster. Knulli doesn't yet have support for sleep with the SP (sorry-- FLIPZZIZLE) hinge though, which is how I discovered MuOS in the first place.
When I set a device down, I never want to have to think, "should I sleep it or shut it all the way down?" When I pick up a device, I never want to find it dead because I chose wrong. MuOS solves this problem by auto saving and shutting down after five minutes in sleep mode (or one, or ten, it's configurable). And you can set it up to boot directly into the last game you played and load that autosave, so it's totally seamless. You can also set it to wait for a WiFi connection before loading the game, useful if you're hunting Retroachievements. And if you change your mind while booting and don't want to wait the extra 10-20s that takes, you can press Start to boot directly into the game without waiting for WiFi, or Select to boot into the main menu instead. Knulli doesn't do any of that. It looks pretty and all, but I don't want to look at a pretty menu, I want to play my games. MuOS gets out of the way and lets me do that.
My only issue with MuOS at this time is that it doesn't hotswap to bluetooth controller like Knulli. When you connect a BT controller Knulli automatically assigns it as P1. From what I know atm You have to manually do this in MuOS. I like connecting my SP to the TV and using my BT controller and then when I disconnect use the console with no fuss.

Amazing customisations, ES, the most number of systems available, and of course access to the amazing Acorn Electron and BBC Micro with pad2key mappings available. Heaven. And this distro will only get better as they fix things.
With regards to the partition formats, I made a flash drive with Batocera, which I formatted the partition to exFAT, then reformatted it to NTFS on Windows and copied all the folders back on. That allows me to access to the rom files, etc, on Windows. Not sure if it works with Portmaster or not. I also threw Retrobat on there, then symlinked (apparently Windows has symlink functionality) the files on Batocera to the Retrobat folders. Now I have the flexibility to use either setup, based on the type of device I plug it into.

It has Bluetooth support including audio, and on-device art scraper. Themes and game collections manipulation is better, too (MuOS themes is basically the frontpage icons and font/colors, in Knulli there are deep customizations of how you want your systems and gamelists displayed - depends on the theme). In functionality it has parity with MuOS barring the hinge support on SP and shutdown after x minutes in sleep. Currently it also support 64bit ports only compared to MuOS's 32&64 bit support. 32bit support on Knulli will come in time

Yo, Techdweeb! Can you wirelessly copy rom files to ANY handheld console 9:36 using the run dialogue Windows + R?! Maybe this is only possible because Knulii enables a share folder. How would you do this with another handheld, like a Pow🐱 RGB30?

Hey techdweeb, Can you do a video on port master? I just downloaded stardew valley on my 35xx plus and wanted to see if there is an analog option to build in the game. Since you have the same device you can see what I’m talking about. Would changing from muOS to knulli fix this problem?
I really happy about this firmware! Can’t wait to test it and many thanks about postmaster! Another thing, How is the performance? It’s any better than MUos,koriki or last stock update? Thanks!!!!
I can't save the RetroArch configuration file and directory overrides are not automatically applied like they're supposed to. Kind of a bummer because my paddle/triggers are not mapped on the rg35xx plus.
So it says knulli has hinge support added on the RG35XX SP but on testing it isn't working. I got the latest firmware from the site. Is there a way to enable/disable it? Is there something I'm missing? I've searched through all the settings and don't see anything about it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Aside from that I'm loving knulli 😁😁😁
If Knulli gets to a state where it doesn't have any missing/broken major features & boots fast etc, I almost wouldn't mind using it on both my RG35XXH as well as an RG35XXSP which I currently don't own but wish I had bought instead. I tried muOS & Knulli when I first bought it & ended up going back to stock then modified stock. There was a couple of annoying issues with muOS back then & Knulli just felt like it needed a LOT of work.
Is there anyway you could make a video on how to setup a new sd card on the RG35xx h on a Mac? You did one for Garlic OS but I want to run stock OS and there are no tutorials on how to do this with detailed instructions. Do I first erase the new SD card and change the format? I don’t know where to start. I’m ready to just give up on emulators if it means I must buy a windows laptop.
Hi Dweeb! When keeping os and roms on 2 different sd cards, do you know if I can seamlessly swap os cards between knulli and stock os, or roms and saves wont be visible and/or work right away?
Gotta ask, when i spotted this video I was like "YES!!!" I can make my SP less mid now, but when I check the Knulli page they don't have an SP specific build. So my question is, does the regular H or 2024 build cope with the SP related features... namely quick suspend on closing screen?
10:02 BE WARNED! If you look at the BIOS files in the stock SD card, some of them, crucially the PS1 BIOS files, are 0KB dummy files. Don't use these. The ones that aren't 0KB dummy files are fine as they generally pass RetroArch's file check (uses checksums, and thus can detect bad files)
11:10 There's a caveat with using the built-in theme downloader. It uses the Batocera theme repository (Knulli is basically Batocera with looser hardware support terms), and a lot of Batocera themes don't play well with the 640x480 display. GitHub has a repo named "Emulationstation-OGA-Theme-Gallery" for ES themes that have been made with this kind of display in mind (mostly for ArkOS on certain Powkiddy handhelds). You'll fare better installing these themes manually. I don't quite remember which directory to put the extract theme files to...
Sorta. Dreamcast relies on frameskip, while PSP is more hit-or-miss. Most NDS and many N64 titles are also playable. I'm not yet convinced that Knulli provides the same level of performance as the updated Stock OS in these 'bonus' systems, but some side-by-side testing could change my mind.
Hi, I'm not good at this firmware thing but can someone help me please? The menu button is not working on knulli and for some game A button is switched with B . Sorry if this is a silly question .
I made the games partition fat 32. It works in windows. but it is cumbersome as I have to re assign a letter to the card every time I plug the card into the windows laptop. maybe that is wonenreason why using WiFi is easier. but I haven't tried WiFi myself.
@@TheNoonski Thanks, for the info. Is it a hard limit to FAT32? If so, the main disadvantage would be the 4GB file size limit. That shouldn't be a problem with these devices since they can't play GameCube or PS2. At best PSP which maxes out at 1.5GB.
No 'hibernate' or quick suspend/resume sleep mode. Annoying to transfer files if you want to use EXT4 format for better portmaster compatibility. Also the portmaster compatibility isn't as good in general as MUOS. Also the performance in a few emulators like dreamcast isn't quite as good as it is on stock. Pretty small issues in the big picture though, I use Knulli on all these things.
@@dscottplays4700 Saturn is hit and miss. I tried a few games. Astal didn't load, Nights was playable but slow, same with Silvergun. Rayman and Saturn Bomberman ran great though! IMO, it's worth the small sacrifice to have a better menu and tons more systems to emulate. Oh, and you can read comics on it too if you desire.
@@TechDweeb another question if you don't mind... I noticed the "retro achievements" for this os, dose arkos have that? I can't seem to find any in depth explanation of arkos and I'm wondering if I should try somthin different
I have batocera on mine with emulationstation and I like it but what I really hate is that I have to shutdown the console for my save files to stay on it. Theres no charger warnings. The console has to power on and boot up just to charge. There’s no volume indication when turning it up or down. It’s also an older version of retroarch vs. the stock os. The stock os is definitely uglier but the modded version of the stock os might be more functional despite being uglier?
Is there an option without a PC/windows (only have a chromebook, smartphone, xbox series x) to get this OS/upload games to SD card? I really want to get into emulation and buy the SP/my first anbernic device but don't have anything running Windows. :(
i have the latest Knulli on my RG35XX H , its a bit janky to be honest , connecting to wi fi everytime you reboot is annoying , none of the portmaster games I have tried recognise the controls , ill stick with stock for now , it just works , themes are nice and being able to use portmaster is great but the Knulli OS just isn't there yet for me.
Honestly as amazing as knulli is, it's the reason why I bought a miyoo mini plus tbh. Whilst I love ES and how seamless everything works, I've had my fair share of issues with it installed on my 35XXH, such as 2d games lagging like crazy if I turn off shaders (and if I don't the image looks blurry), I can't update via OTA, the newest version didn't support the analog sticks, drag and dropping the update file corrupting the OS, and most importantly no sleep mode(which kills me the most) I just got my miyoo mini plus but onion is genuinely is so much better imo, I think interface wise I still prefer ES but onion os just works, and it's amazing. Thanks for the great video techdweeb sir !
Sleep mode has always worked, but Anbernic's proprietary kernel uses about 5% of the battery per hour while asleep. Knulli's "batocera beta" build had a bug in shutoff mode where shutdown would get stuck when using exfat, but ext4 works fine and I think the issue was fixed in Knulli. OTA doesn't work from bato to knulli since they're different OSes, but it works for updating knulli. Analog sticks work fine and always have, but Anbernic's kernel has such a huge dead zone, it causes cardinal snapping. I've had basically no issues on my 35XXH with bato-beta and knulli, except that the buttons are too stiff. I have a Miyoo Mini Plus too, with Onion... and have run into several issues with it. The physical controls feel nicer since they're softer, but the hardware is slower so it can't run as many games or enable as many features, the clock doesn't work due to a hardware flaw, I've seen it randomly fail to boot, it corrupted its database within a few days, it uses old versions of things, and it's is missing a ton of features I've come to rely on in other devices. Both are using the same exact model of Sandisk, not the included card.
Does Knulli have the "Quick Mode" like ArkOS does, where it mimics Garlic/Onion OS in creating a save state when you power off and when you turn on it loads up the last state?
for mine i started with the "tiny best set go" about 6gb, then added what else id want from the "done set 2" (good rom hacks without having to patch yourself) also added from "retro roms best set", if you search the quoted names and go to the archive website you'll be set!!

I have the R36S and I have the operating system and games on the same card and I used a 256gb card and filled it up with games, preview video's and images and its really laggy and takes ages to boot up. Should I separate the games from the operating system on different cards or just use a smaller card and get rid of the video's?
Thanks for an awesome tutorial!
I successfully installed KNULLI, connected to the share folder over my network and transferred all my BIOS and ROM files. However, after I click the update games list in the KNULLI settings I still do not see all my games and systems. Did I miss a step or something else I can try?
1:12 haha luv you Dweebs 😂
What does this offer over MuOS? Built-in theme downloading? The latest MuOS release boots in 6 seconds, I don't know how anything else can compete...
32bit support on Knulli will come in time
@@dominikcech1478 nice! BT audio is very impressive.
@@dominikcech1478 How well does BT audio work on Knulli? Can you pair some true wireless buds to it and have as consistent an experience as using the 3.5mm port? Does WiFi work at the same time as BT audio?
Yo, Techdweeb! Can you wirelessly copy rom files to ANY handheld console 9:36 using the run dialogue Windows + R?! Maybe this is only possible because Knulii enables a share folder. How would you do this with another handheld, like a Pow🐱 RGB30?
My zazzbizzle came with a black 64gb kioska sd card, is it reliable enough to run knulli on one card?
Thank you for improving my life Techdweeb!
a detailed tutorial video installing native pico8 on knulli with a windows pc would be a literal game changer!!! i dont know how difficult it would be because nobody will make a video and everyone just tells you to read the wiki but i've still managed to mess that up somehow and had to flash knulli to a new card and start from scratch lol.
Going to have to try this!
Hey techdweeb, Can you do a video on port master? I just downloaded stardew valley on my 35xx plus and wanted to see if there is an analog option to build in the game. Since you have the same device you can see what I’m talking about. Would changing from muOS to knulli fix this problem?
When I am flashing the OS on Balena, what format should my microsd card be? Exfat or FAT32 or something else?
7:30 this confused me so much, the two sd card slots is terrible idea
I really happy about this firmware! Can’t wait to test it and many thanks about postmaster! Another thing,
How is the performance? It’s any better than MUos,koriki or last stock update? Thanks!!!!
I can't save the RetroArch configuration file and directory overrides are not automatically applied like they're supposed to. Kind of a bummer because my paddle/triggers are not mapped on the rg35xx plus.
I run muos in slot 1 and modified stock in slot2 w games, lets me dual boot in case card 1 corrupts, gonna try out knuli in slot 2 now
To me the best one to use is Rufus! I tried the one you were talking about and it's trash. Rufus is much better and works well!
So it says knulli has hinge support added on the RG35XX SP but on testing it isn't working. I got the latest firmware from the site. Is there a way to enable/disable it? Is there something I'm missing? I've searched through all the settings and don't see anything about it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Aside from that I'm loving knulli 😁😁😁
you have my respect showing gun smoke!! Cheers!!!
Portmaster has been recetly added to stock OS for all RGXXX systems and that's the reason why I stick to modified stock os.
I heard the Linux guy shown at 7:05 is actually TechDweeb.
🤫
Elementarial is good by the way
Wait, the 35XX can do Dreamcast and PSP?
Have you installed knulli on a rg40xxv .
Hi, I'm not good at this firmware thing but can someone help me please? The menu button is not working on knulli and for some game A button is switched with B . Sorry if this is a silly question .
i have the ANBERNIC RG35XX (not the + version) will this still work. it's currently on garlic os
Short answer, no. Needs the Plus or 2024 edition
Unfortunately I cannot network transfer. I cannot disable the encryption on my wifi to do so. :(
Is it supposed to re-install every time I turn it back on?
it doesn't seem to save my metadata, is there a solution to this?
Why is Wi-Fi transfer better? Is there a disadvantage to use SD card transfer?
I made the games partition fat 32. It works in windows. but it is cumbersome as I have to re assign a letter to the card every time I plug the card into the windows laptop. maybe that is wonenreason why using WiFi is easier. but I haven't tried WiFi myself.
@@TheNoonski Thanks, for the info. Is it a hard limit to FAT32? If so, the main disadvantage would be the 4GB file size limit. That shouldn't be a problem with these devices since they can't play GameCube or PS2. At best PSP which maxes out at 1.5GB.
What would you say are the downsides to Knulli?
No 'hibernate' or quick suspend/resume sleep mode. Annoying to transfer files if you want to use EXT4 format for better portmaster compatibility. Also the portmaster compatibility isn't as good in general as MUOS. Also the performance in a few emulators like dreamcast isn't quite as good as it is on stock. Pretty small issues in the big picture though, I use Knulli on all these things.
How's Saturn performance, out of curiosity?😅
@@dscottplays4700 Saturn is hit and miss. I tried a few games. Astal didn't load, Nights was playable but slow, same with Silvergun. Rayman and Saturn Bomberman ran great though!
IMO, it's worth the small sacrifice to have a better menu and tons more systems to emulate. Oh, and you can read comics on it too if you desire.
@Cyko.. I can agree. Plus the online updater is nice, so if there's a future update, it will be ready with the use of a computer.
Ok, please forgive my ignorance I'm just so out of touch with tech anymore... I have arkos on my rg35xx... Should I replace it with this os now?
Nope, if you have ARKOS that's still a great operating system no need to switch
@@TechDweeb another question if you don't mind... I noticed the "retro achievements" for this os, dose arkos have that? I can't seem to find any in depth explanation of arkos and I'm wondering if I should try somthin different
Looks so good!. I take it my RG ARC-D wont be able to use this os?
I have batocera on mine with emulationstation and I like it but what I really hate is that I have to shutdown the console for my save files to stay on it. Theres no charger warnings. The console has to power on and boot up just to charge. There’s no volume indication when turning it up or down. It’s also an older version of retroarch vs. the stock os. The stock os is definitely uglier but the modded version of the stock os might be more functional despite being uglier?
Is this different to the Batocera one I have? It looks essentially the same.
How would I go about doing the \\KNULLI in mac?
I tried in terminal but not sure
Is there an option without a PC/windows (only have a chromebook, smartphone, xbox series x) to get this OS/upload games to SD card? I really want to get into emulation and buy the SP/my first anbernic device but don't have anything running Windows. :(
Great video!
i have the latest Knulli on my RG35XX H , its a bit janky to be honest , connecting to wi fi everytime you reboot is annoying , none of the portmaster games I have tried recognise the controls , ill stick with stock for now , it just works , themes are nice and being able to use portmaster is great but the Knulli OS just isn't there yet for me.
Hi will this work for the OG RG35xx? The first one released
Honestly as amazing as knulli is, it's the reason why I bought a miyoo mini plus tbh.
Whilst I love ES and how seamless everything works, I've had my fair share of issues with it installed on my 35XXH, such as 2d games lagging like crazy if I turn off shaders (and if I don't the image looks blurry), I can't update via OTA, the newest version didn't support the analog sticks, drag and dropping the update file corrupting the OS, and most importantly no sleep mode(which kills me the most)
I just got my miyoo mini plus but onion is genuinely is so much better imo, I think interface wise I still prefer ES but onion os just works, and it's amazing.
Thanks for the great video techdweeb sir !
I found that i had the same issues. I went with MUos. Not the flashiest front end but it got the job done with no issues....and the sleep mode works
muos is king for anbernic
No better feeling that Zazzbizzling it up.
I installed Knulli and i dont have tge option to download Portmaster, can anyone help?
I downloaded file. I flash it and it completes but my rg35xx doesn’t turn on. Any help?
@techdweeb Do you have a tutorial on how to best build out a games list the way that you do for emulation station?
for mine i started with the "tiny best set go" about 6gb, then added what else id want from the "done set 2" (good rom hacks without having to patch yourself) also added from "retro roms best set", if you search the quoted names and go to the archive website you'll be set!!
can you tell me which front-end you have on the logitech g cloud in this video? and how did you synchronize the games and game lists to the other handheld?
Do you know how to make file transfers faster? Im copying files to the shared folder and its taking forever!! Great video!!
Hi how can I change the colour on gameboy I am red and green colour blind and it’s driving me crazy playing these
Can it be changed to pocket I can see grey
