Love your videos and podcasts I am 68 yrs. old and starting to build a 1952 Fargo hopefully will live to see it completed.I don't have a garage but bought a backhoe to build one yesterday. It is going to be a pole barn and the savings of buying the backhoe will pay off it self now that is logic. HaHa Take care and enjoy

Living a great life. Everyday is fun. That's worth a fortune, Living your dream and not dreading getting up and working to make someone else's dream come true has value. You guys are enviable. I get to vicariously get to share it with you.. I love it!!

I agree 100% with the logic. Love the show and I'm not usually a person that likes listening to "the talk" but I am digging your show. Keep it up guys.

I really enjoy the the podcasts, it’s purpose is to sit down and give more details of the hot rod world, one thing to see it being done, another thing to get more details by explaining more aspects of the process. Plus, you interview people that are in that customizing/fabricating world, even the photographer you interviewed, I learned a lot about photography and the brains behind capturing images. Those who skip your podcasts, are losing out on expanding their knowledge base, I have learned a lot, it has enriched my world. That’s just my two cents worth.

I like this discussion. I usually buy an older build and drive it while I’m fixing and improving it. I’ve always kept a diary of each car and kept track of how much money I have into a car. Then when I sell / trade it, I try to move up in the car hobby. But I know I’m only kidding myself. I don’t care. It’s my hobby and fun. That’s all I spend money on….. just ask my wife !

I am now 86 I have owned upwards of 70 cars! I was in the motor trade during my working life. 11 years of which with my own restoration business. I have never had a coil fail causing a breakdown. That's not to say it will won't happen tomorrow!! What I am saying is that there is a strong probability it is something else!. Enjoy a lot of what you do as 7 of my cars were Allard flat heads. This included one of the now rear pre war car of which only 12 were made! Best of luck with all you do !

I lived in southern Oregon for the first 17 years of my life. My dad built and raced hardtops and stockcars. At 14 I was given a 1932 5 window Ford that was sitting in a field with other old touring cars and farm equipment. All I had to do was put the front and rear axles back under it and get it off the property. My dad gave me a jack and loaned me some tools. I had the front end back under it, and then someone stole my jack. My dad refused to give me another and so my project ended. Months later we moved away and the next time I was by the property a year later, the field was clean and under plow. Damn it. I also around that time made my spending money doing yard work, this was back in the mid 60s. I was working for this old lady that told me to find a tool in her garage and what did I find but a full on rail dragster, cool, seems her grandson kept it there. What a crazy find.

Another great "shooting the sh!t" session! You are absolutely right about the car math...we all seem to forget to add in our hours in the build! The other problem is buying a part or collectable (like old car models) for cheap, planning on making a profit, and then getting attached and they sit on the shelf! Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!

Love these podcasts. My story for you is my first car. I was 15 yo and needed a car as I lived on a small farm and worked for other farmers in the area. My cousin was 17 and was trying to start a paint shop in an old barn on his dad's farm. He had a 50 chevy 2 door hard top that he had leaded the hood and deck, but hadn't sanded or painted. He wanted $350 dollars but told me if I would sand it and buy the paint, he would let me have it for $250. This was in 1960 and I drove it my whole high school years. Loved that car, but broke down often.

I watch/listen to a lot of podcasts and this is one of my favorites i look forward too. I watch anything from no prep drag racing to street race stuff to builder series style stuff and this is one of the best. I build old stuff (40’s) gmc/ford trucks and its fun to see you guys pointing out the gold in a pile of otherwise scrap steel. Your into a very cool industry. Keep up the good work. Those 41 big truck fenders I bought off you at your house last year will be going on their first test drive on my new build in the next few weeks👍

Matt and Mike, you are the young guys also. I can’t believe I am 61 but you are also the young guys. Matt, your nephew sounds awesome. Its great that he is able to do the machine work.
I don’t do hot rods but I have a ‘20 model T, an ‘83 300SD, a 74 TR6, and others that great that your nephew has taken a Mercedes diesel and put it in a Ranger.
I started working on cars when I was 11, and I can’t believe how old I am now. I still feel 18. I still have multiple projects ahead of me.

When I was in my twenties (in the 90s) I spent about fifty dollars a month on comics and graphic novels. That was a lot, given the income I was on back then. But I didn't drink, didn't smoke, so, I had to spend it on something. I still have them all and they're probably worth a bit. I'll never know, because I'll never sell them. I guess they were my Iron Trap.
    Great podcast, by the way.

I remember my parents talking about the Crystal Ballroom and it burning down., so your mention of it caught my attention. I imagine they maybe went dancing there in the 50s. Question, in the back corner of the office there, is that Pol-E's weird uncle, Green Weenie? But seriously, Matt, Mike, thanks for the videos.

Thank you Matt and Mike for sharing this information with me ! I really enjoy watching , learning and some laughs ! I do the Car Math stuff often but not selling stuff just buying thing with something that has a expensive item that cost more than I paid for the whole item ! Like I bought a '84 Scottsdale 3/4 ton flatbed with a snow blade for $4000.00 ! If I was to sell parts off I would make money off of them ! But my driveway is 1/10 mile long a we do get a lot of snow at times and I can go clear snow from parking lots to make money !

Totally agree with your Car Guy Math approach with one caveat....it only works though if you're a hobbyist. Can't do Car Guy Math when you're also relying on the profits to pay the rent and keep the lights on! Ok, maybe you can do it and just ignore the fact you're still eating ramen noodles daily. Update: Of course I make this comment before you mentioned ramen! lol

Ill add another aspect to the car math problem; age. Im older than you guys and Im losing enthusiasum for big projects. I sold a 64 shortbed that I owned for 21 years and realized it would never get done. Took the money and kept looking and ended up with a 64 Bel Air that I drove home.....and still drive! Yep, its a twisted world we create for ourselves!

Hi good discussion and update thank you both
I think one car group you didn’t really touch on is those luckily enough to have disposable income, often older retirees (just look at demographics of car shows etc)
My own passion is early Citroens and I buy the best car I can afford knowing as long as I own it will require work and parts.
I wouldn’t say I don’t care but I accept that I will probably lose money but like Matt has said before, you can get great pleasure just looking at that car in your garage and enjoy the occasional ride out when the risk of rain is low, I’m very fortunate but then I don’t spend money on extravagant IT equipment or take holidays -ya pays your money……. etc etc 👋🏻

If you never sell the cars, you don't need to learn the math! My passion is my 4 COOPs. At 80, I am still doing mechanical design consulting for the company I started at in Ohio in 1972 (same year I bought 40 COOP). Boy, it's bought a lot of tools and car parts. JUST DON'T TRY TO DO THE MATH! 🤪
