The "Tafelspitz! is the name of the cut. It is the cut named in the US "round top" located at the very end of the spinal direct before the tail starts and is from an young ox. The whole piece of the cut got put in a big pot with water which has to cover the meat entirely + beef bones + peppercorns and bay leaves and that got boiled by low temperature -"simmer" - for round 2 hours (during that simmer process there will appear skimmings on top which has to be skimed off several times until no skimmings appear anymore). Then after round 2 hours classical soup vegetables are added (whole carrots, celery roots, parsley roots, leeks and 1-2 chopped in half but not peeled onions = the brown top peel of the onion is what gives the broth the dark colour) that simmers for round an other hour or a bit more till it becomes a rich beef broth and the meat inside the broth becomes tender (= when you stab the meat whole through with a meat fork and the meat doesn´t stick on the fork). After that the whole piece of meat got put out and the broth got finally seasoned with salt (if neccessary also with pepper) and a bit nutmegg, the meat got sliced into slices in order to got served on a plate with the beef broth + the side dishes. There is no chicken broth but a beef broth literally done from scratch during the whole cooking process.. And about the Schnitzel...the lemon has a purpose and is no decoration...few drops of lemon juice has to be squeezed over the mouth pieces adding a light freshness to the savory taste of the bite...and the sauce is actually not a cranberry sauce but a lingonberry sauce...Well lingonberries are biological close related to cranberries (basically their cousins so to speak, but regardless a totally different berry) Lingonberries are way smaller + darker in red colour and way sweeter than any cranberries...=I know those are often translated into cranberries in the menues but just because to give tourists just an idea what to expect, because lingonberries are usually out of experience not that very well known by tourists, but everyone knows cranberries. And the guy didn´t have "semolina dumpling"..those dumplings are made with wheat flour + eggs and milk (or water) + salt mixed together to become a droppy and sticky batter which got dropped dropwise into boiling water in order to become dumplings (in other regions those "Nockerln" are called "Spätzle" especially when the batter is done with water instead of milk) ..no semolina and no potato involved..and the dish is named "Eiernockerl/dumplings with scrambled eggs" which is a very classic simple + tasty Viennese dish...."semolina dumplings/"Grießnockerln" on the other hand are solely and exclusively only served in a soup..and they are looking totally different and are way bigger so there is only one or maybe two in a soup bowl or soup plate... I guess you ordered so much at the same time that at the end you lost oversight and got a bit confused ;-D totally understandable The Esterhazy Torte got dedicated to = "Prince Esterhazy de Galantha" his aristocratic House was Hungarian High Aristocracy and "the Esterhazys" were very influencial in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire..The Esterhazy Torte is basically a special sort of a chocolate buttercream cake and yours was "the Cafe´s House Torte" inspired by an Esterhazy Torte and therefore looks a bit different in behalf of the glaze on top and the number of layers, but it basically tastes the same as like as the Original..
Fun fact. Vienna is one of the greenest Citys in the World. You just have to leave the inner districts. Exempels Donauinsel and Wienerwald which means Viennaforest

The 20th, 21st, 22nd, 10th districts can be nasty as fuck, the rent is most times low and there are trees almost everywhere. Yes Berlin has more trees, but it does not take a while to see some trees, except for districts like the 7th, 8th,9th and the inner circle of the 1st district. In which district did you spent your time?

Some traditional Viennese foods: Kebab, Shawarma. Great way to taste local delights. Naschmarkt another "great" experience full of Austrian delights. I think the only thing that is Austrian there is the name, is just a tourist trap being the most famous market but the experience and the quality is the meh and the prices are very high. The architecture of Vienna is amazing but the spirit has been lost on the way. Glad you've enjoyed the most livable city in the world. I wonder how are the others?! :))
In Austria we say "Wien ist anders" Vienna's different. Cause it is the only real big city. If you want to experience more outside of christmas season, there are much more places that fell different from each other. You got the alps, the Woody areas in upper Austria or Styria, the Winery region Southeast of Vienna down to Mittelburgenland, and the many different lakes in Austria. If you are a fan of the first Viennese school, the classical music of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn, Salzburg and Eisenstadt(where i am from) are places worth a visit(even though there isnt much else there.If you're more of a skyline person, I guess Bad Ischl or Hallstadt have got you covered. There are also a lot of "Thermen" (something like the japanese Onsen, just more unnatural) in eastern Austria, if you like thise sort of things, tho they are quite expensive. But I guess during christmas time, Vienna has the most to offer, as many people from around Vienna travel to Vienna just for its many Christmas markets.
We speak Austrian not german. Would be the same saying Americans speak British. Bretzel aren’t everywhere, Kipferl are (a Viennese baker invented them to mock the Turks after they tried to conquer Vienna, but also thanks to that the oldest coffee house in Europe was in Vienna and they also had the first zoo in Europe). To me, the semolina dumplings look more like "egg dumplings". They consist mainly of flour, water and eggs with a little onion, sometimes bacon. There is not a single potato in this dish. 🤫 It is a typical speciality here in Austria. In Austria, Kaiserschmarrn is mainly eaten with compote. This makes it taste super juicy 😋
Potato dumplings are an Austrian (Bohemian) speciality. But Spätzle are made with: flour, eggs, butter, milk, salt, like you say. I wouldn't go to Salmbräu to get Viennese food. (Not to say its a bad place, but i would think that Tafelspitz does not swim in the soup more often than not).
because there is no american food :-) Burger is from Hamburg, Fries are from Belgium. They do have great food ofc, but similar to American culture / population, there is a tendency to mix different things up. Which - in terms of food - can lead to horrible things, like a lasagna made with Wiener Schnitzel i once saw.

Unfortunately, you were in a tourist restaurant. The Salm-Bräu has little to do with Viennese cuisine. Often bad food and lazy drinks. If a chef at Plachutta served spinach like that, he would be fired. You eat "Tafelspitz" at Plachutta. Unfortunately, the Salm-Bräu has become a pure tourist rip-off. Not recommended! Some traditional Viennese foods: Kebab, Shawarma. Great way to taste local delights. Naschmarkt another "great" experience full of Austrian delights. I think the only thing that is Austrian there is the name, is just a tourist trap being the most famous market but the experience and the quality is the meh and the prices are very high. The architecture of Vienna is amazing but the spirit has been lost on the way. Glad you've enjoyed the most livable city in the world. I wonder how are the others?! :))

Austria making the same mistakes as Germany AGAIN.
In Austria we say "Wien ist anders" Vienna's different. Cause it is the only real big city. If you want to experience more outside of christmas season, there are much more places that fell different from each other. You got the alps, the Woody areas in upper Austria or Styria, the Winery region Southeast of Vienna down to Mittelburgenland, and the many different lakes in Austria. If you are a fan of the first Viennese school, the classical music of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn, Salzburg and Eisenstadt(where i am from) are places worth a visit(even though there isnt much else there.If you're more of a skyline person, I guess Bad Ischl or Hallstadt have got you covered.
There are also a lot of "Thermen" (something like the japanese Onsen, just more unnatural) in eastern Austria, if you like thise sort of things, tho they are quite expensive.
But I guess during christmas time, Vienna has the most to offer, as many people from around Vienna travel to Vienna just for its many Christmas markets.

We speak Austrian not german. Would be the same saying Americans speak British. Bretzel aren’t everywhere, Kipferl are (a Viennese baker invented them to mock the Turks after they tried to conquer Vienna, but also thanks to that the oldest coffee house in Europe was in Vienna and they also had the first zoo in Europe). And u eat “sachet torte” only at the original store/bakery the “Sacher” near the opera house
Of course we speak German, as there is no language called "Austrian" but a bunch of Austrian dialects.

However, due to a lawsuit, which the hotel won, Café Demel was deprived of the right to continue calling theirs the original.
To me, the semolina dumplings look more like "egg dumplings". They consist mainly of flour, water and eggs with a little onion, sometimes bacon. There is not a single potato in this dish. 🤫 It is a typical speciality here in Austria.
In Austria, Kaiserschmarrn is mainly eaten with compote. This makes it taste super juicy 😋
Potato dumplings are an Austrian (Bohemian) speciality. But Spätzle are made with: flour, eggs, butter, milk, salt, like you say.
I wouldn't go to Salmbräu to get Viennese food. (Not to say its a bad place, but i would think that Tafelspitz does not swim in the soup more often than not).

They do have great food ofc, but similar to American culture / population, there is a tendency to mix different things up. Which - in terms of food - can lead to horrible things, like a lasagna made with Wiener Schnitzel i once saw.

Kebab...ehm yeah nice but it's Turkish, not Austrian. Falaffel is actually not a No 1 Austrian Dish though it's good..not our No 1. It's not Germany! BRETZELN are more if a Bavarian Thing. We like Croissant, Kipferl or Semmeln filled with whatever. It's Frankfurter not Wiener in Vienna. Only Germany calls it Wiener. Nope it is called Heldenplatz. (Heros Square ?)

Unfortunately, you were in a tourist restaurant. The Salm-Bräu has little to do with Viennese cuisine. Often bad food and lazy drinks. If a chef at Plachutta served spinach like that, he would be fired.
You eat "Tafelspitz" at Plachutta.
Unfortunately, the Salm-Bräu has become a pure tourist rip-off.
