    TBH, I think the notion that British white people lacking culture is a stereotypical assumption made by black people like myself from a young age. White British people definitely do have a culture and ranges from things like literature (Jane Austin), art, theatre (Shakespeare), architect (various forms), sport (Rugby) and food (Full English Breakfast, Sunday Roast) to name a basic few.

      Rave culture is primarily white British culture. Shoom etc, M25 raves, free parties (free festival culture + DiY soundsystem), Northern Soul in the North. Jamaican soundsystems started to have an influence later on, from the start of the 90s - there were no MCs at early raves.

      Rice come from a very specific region of china but I don’t think you could tell Indians for example that certain rice dishes aren’t part of their culture, or the Japanese, Thais, Pakistanis, Afghans, Africans and so on… ingredients dont have to be native to a land to be part of culture. That would make most aspects of everybody’s culture “not theirs”

    If Poet really wants to experience British white culture or even just British culture generally then he needs to get out of his comfort zone and explore places in the U.K other than London. Theres lot's of history in Britain. Especially in the countryside. Just because something you are not familiar with something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Not talking about racism btw. Talking about things that have shaped the country to what it was today. E.g. Shakespeare, Romans, Vikings, Castles, Stone henge, Dark Ages, King Henry, Football, Rugby, Beer, certain music such a Rock, British Farming or artwork by people like Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Damien Hirst etc

      @@vandenberghsimon that doesn't make sense though. You're calling it part of british culture even though tea didn't originate from Britain. Saying Poet's using & doing 'British things' so football for example originated in Britain but is part of the culture in so many different counties including Jamaica. So by your tea argument, Poet watching football isn't a British thing, it's a Jamaican thing. Right? Cause it doesn't have to be invented there for it to be part of culture? You can't have it both ways. Either it's british cause it originates in Britain OR because it's part of the culture. If it's part of the culture you can't accuse him of doing british things cause all those British things are part of other cultures. Maybe he's doing their culture's things

    What's interesting about tea being so deeply embedded in English tradition is that there was not one tea plantation to be found in Britain up until 2-3 years ago. The first and only (emphasis on only) tea plantation in the UK was opened around 2014 or so. Tea has always been (and still is) imported from India and China, and in the more recent years from Kenya. England's culture is a carefully curated amalgamation of greatness from other cultures. Respect to what you guys do, one love.

    Being Black and British means that British Culture is a part of who we are - but think about this - how do your African or Jamaican counterparts view you? Very White? The parts of white culture in Britain that we find difficult to find are the parts that we have accepted wholly as are own. If we was back in our countries of origin then what we are currently like as "Black" people would be very different culturally.

    There's no black culture in England you have different carribean and different Africa cultures but not 'black' the only reason there is black culture in America is because their root's were stripped away from them during slavery and because they don't know where they're from they can't identify with any specific culture so they had to form a new culture within America.

      Tea is a natural product of India, taken and transported on mass back to the UK during the British empire's peak through the east India trading company which then became extremely popular with Brits and was later refined (addition of sugar and milk etc) Handy to have this sort of knowledge my friend (this is coming from a white, English born male by the way)

      Pubs can be associated with Ireland and Scotland yes but they come from England. Also fish and chips are not Greek they come from east london 😂😂 sounds like you're trying to push a false narrative if I'm honest. As for tea yes it was imported from Asia but Jamaica didn't have marijuana as it came from India. Italy's pasta comes from China. Does this mean it's not their culture? No it just means they adopted things from other cultures to make their own take and it's not as if england stole things from cultures to make their own all the time england created football, rugby, various foods etc on english soil, authentically 100% english.

    The reason you can't identify white British culture is because it is the norm and the basis of society in England. Just the same as if a white person were to go and live in Jamaica they would be easily identifiable from the rest of the population. British white culture is hard to identify because it has become so widespread as the basis of all culture in western civilisation.

    I think what happened is that the English Culture is such a dominant culture and has been for so long that it became the standard for a lot of people to the point where you almost can’t identify it because it’s baked into everything in such a large way. Not to mention it’s been a culture very receptive to other culture and has embraced aspects of other cultures that were were preferable to their own. To me it’s the sign of a former empire that has seen the whole world and taken back the beautiful parts of other cultures to its own.

      stop me if I'm wrong right, but I come from an English dad and Baltic mum splitting me between two cultures, I think it's a lot less complicated than they're making it out to be, you just come from mixed cultural background, the only reason this gets so much hype is because there's a very visible distinction with mixed race people, you identify with you, you know, people acting like we're some sort of hive mind with no sense of identity and are shackled to our genetic background really irritates me

    The ‘England has no culture’ claim comes from spite and resentment. It’s basically a ‘my culture is better than English culture’ argument. There are things great and unique about every culture.
    But here are a few examples:
    - The Modern English Suit (worn by every business man and most world leaders globally)
    - Bonfire Night, 5th November
    - Pancake day
    - Rugby
    - Tennis
    - Cricket
    - English Pubs
    - Cadbury’s chocolate (started as a small shop front by a local man in Birmingham 200 years ago)
    - Vimpto (started on a market stall in Manchester in the 1800’s)
    - Winnie the Pooh (adopted by the globe)
    - Harry Potter (English author, set and based on English boarding school life)
    - Lord of the Rings (English author who was an expert in ancient English language at Oxford)
    - The Jungle Book (Richard Kipling)
    - Peter Rabbit
    - William Shakespeare
    - Isaac Newton
    - Charles Darwin
    - Parliamentary Democracy
    - Rule of Law
    - many Pies
    - Pasties
    - All mannner of baked goods - (Lemon drizzle, Eccles cakes, Victoria sponge, Bakewell tarts, sticky toffee pudding, scones, apple crumble, Chelsea buns, Battenberg cake…)

I have afro hair and dreads, I have a typical Nigerian surname, I’ve had racial slurs thrown my way, I was stared at when the history teacher talked about slavery, I’ve been welcomed more by black people and I get treated equally when with black people. I know I’m mixed and I embrace both my heritage. But tell me that I’m not black.

    As a mixed race person who identifies as Black, I think mixed race people identify as black or mixed race because White is the dominant racial group in Europe and the World, if the world was run by Black People the dynamic would be different, because Black people would control who is and who isn't part of the dominant culture. Also who is considered white has changed over time in years gone by Irish, Jews, Italians and Greeks were not considered white by the Dominant white groups like the British, French, Scandinavians and Germans.

    Around 13:28 Poet says white people don't have traditions, here's a list (for English people anyway): Sunday roasts, christenings, baby showers, hen nights and stag dos, weddings, honeymoons, pancake day, easter, Halloween, Christmas, going out drinking on the weekend etc etc. If he means general behaviour, people from different locations and social status carry themselves very differently throughout England, you could pick out someone from Newcastle vs a posh guy from London just from how they walk, that's culture and tradition.
    Maybe I'm missing his point.

    • @gaffer6820
      @gaffer6820 6 років тому +4

      Murray Herts think you are missing his point a lot of those things are generic things and not strongly identifiable to English culture like Dreadlocks, Rastafarian or Reggae is to Jamaicans for instance. Out of all the countries in the U.K., English are hardest to identify. You can easily identify a Scot or Irish person though because they have alot of strong things that identify their culture. Well at least I think that’s what he’s trying to say.

    • @MurrayHerts
      @MurrayHerts 6 років тому +3

      English culture has been a mash up of Northern Europeon culture, stemming from Rome and Greece, then Germany, France, Nordic cultures for 1500 years (along with Christianity.) I think what English culture is, is the base of all Britain and Ireland now, just Scotland, Ireland and Wales have some more bits on top from their original, tribal heritage.
      If I showed you n simple drawing of someone in a top hat and monocle and said "where is this person from?" you wouldn't say England? we have our own little silly stereotypes
      How many of the biggest rock bands ever were from England? Rolling Stones, the Beatles etc
      England popularised and spread football around the world
      I could give you a list of a million things, Robin Hood, James Bond, Shakespeare, Knights, King Arthur, Cricket, Big Ben, Stonehenge etc, there's 2000 years or English stuff that is iconically English

    • @SI-cd7xs
      @SI-cd7xs 6 років тому +6

      They are 'generic' because of the influence of white ppl. You don't notice what is white culture because it's so influential it's the default. & It's telling that the only time we acknowledge white culture is to associate it with negatives that are not even unique to whites. If we all spoke Gaelic in Britain instead of English you'd be able to identify what is uniquely English. Poet is sitting their draped in a german sportsbrand speaking a germanic language and making a living off of covering an english invention & cultural phenom like football and saying whites have no culture lmaoo
