      I know you love dark souls as well I as do, and I could never understand the combat in that game. Everything else was great but it just felt so random and chaotic compared to souls combat.

      I'm surprised the Witcher's combat is disliked here. Then again, I don't know what difficulty level you play at: the game's combat system really shines in the higher two difficulties. This makes it very miss-able if you play on the normal difficulty like presumably most people would do.
      If there's any comparison that I think would be apt between the two games, it's that they both suffer from a way too open world that causes the games to lose focus.

    Damn Hamish, I didn't think anyone could make a part of me want to play FF XV. Your description of the silent moments of reflection brings nostalgia for my playthrough of Dark Souls, where I wasted many hours gazing at the environment while waiting to be loaded into another player's world. Funny enough, the two games offer opposite feelings in these moments; while FF XV seeks to evoke feelings of camaraderie, Dark Souls uses these moments show that you are utterly alone.

    • @WritingOnGames

      Thanks so much for watching! Some of my favourite moments of Dark Souls are the serene moments where it's just you looking out at the beautiful views, seeing precisely how far you've come on your journey. Like you say, it's going for something completely different (and DS is almost certainly more effective) but it's interesting how a Final Fantasy game can be discussed, on some level, in somewhat similar terms to DS.

    Now, I like anime, and I feel very at home with the tropes and what not, so take my word for whatever it means to you.
    However, I know you're only 15 hours in, so I won't give you too much shit for it, but I feel like you're really understating the personality of these characters by tossing them into the tropes they find their roots lie in.
    Notice might be a broody guy, but it's not without reason, and the alternative is the "genki" happy-go-lucky, Naruto-esque character type, which would be just ridiculous given the situation he's in.
    He's a king by birthright, and before the game even begins, he knows the responsibility of being who he is. And a lot of shit happens to him that justifies his broodiness, but it's not as if that's all there is to his character.
    He likes to fish, he remembers the very first time he interacted with his best friend, he hates bugs, he has troubling getting up in the morning, he has a soft spot for domestic animals and children, and he and his bride-to-be are literally carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.
    It bothers me when people try to tell me these characters are bland and trope-y. The tropes are only there so that players can find them familiar and comfortable, but it's the very humanizing element that you mentioned in the video that makes these characters feel so real and dynamic.
    For instance, I just passed a very heart-warming scene in the game, where during a stay at a motel, Prompto approached Noctis, and they had a heart-to-heart about Prompto's insecurities, where he explains that he, makes jokes and supports his friends to avoid people noticing just how high-maintenance and ashamed of himself he is, and that's a very real, very common sentiment to have.
    And do you want to know how I got that scene? I got it by getting Prompto's photography skills to a high enough level, and completing another side quest where he and Noctis go out for a photo shoot, so that Prompto can affirm his confidence to become a professional photographer and so that he can take cool pictures of Noctis to send to Lunafreya. And after that he jokes about taking some "pics" of Lunafreya for him, to which Noctis obstinately objects.
    This is humanity in game design, and personally, the more I played the game, the more impressed I became with the characters and fell in love with them.
    The story is a bit slap-shod in places, but it's not a bad story, and certain parts of it really take me back to when I played Final Fantasy 6 when I was a kid. It's not convoluted, everything makes sense withing the context and mechanics of it's world, except for pretty much everything surrounding Ravus, but that's really the only issues I had with the story, and the exposition was very well done. Enough so that I understand everything I need to about this world and it's laws just from playing it and paying attention.
    I urge you to give this a full review once you beat the main game and get past the 40 hrs mark.

      I feel the same way.
      FF7 was my first RPG ever, and so has a spot as my favorite game of all time for the doors it opened up to me, and FF10 was the first Final Fantasy game with interactions between characters that made me really care for them, but FF15 took that to the next level.
      The ensemble's personalities complement each other, which is why it's perfect that there are only the four guys. At first I was annoyed -- nearly all my favorite Final Fantasy characters have been female, like Faris, Terra & Celes, Tifa, Aeris/th, Yuna, or even Ashe or Lightning from the games I didn't like in the series. But for all that I love those characters, the dynamics of the groups they're in don't normally feel as fleshed-out as the group dynamic we see in FF15. Now, I am not saying there's not room for a female in the ensemble of 15 -- when Iris joins up it's a breath of fresh air, and I say this as someone whose favorite character was "Tribal Tatt-Bruh" -- but the main four had such a strong bond, good camaraderie, and range of personality that their group feels more complete than the bigger, more diverse casts of previous incarnations.

      Who the fuck is Notice? As someone who's watched the game being played for the whole length of this video, I know that there's a Noctis who is supposedly emo. Perhaps I must play the game for myself for many hours before I can stop knowing characters' actual names.
      I don't mean to dismiss your argument with this jab, but it does put a dent in your credibility when you're on about having to play 40+ hours to get to know the characters properly when you can't even spell one of their names right. Fucking Notice?? Is that some fan meme?

    Yno I understand both English and Japanese. Ardyn, prompto and luna's English voice acting especially gave great impressions for me so out of curiosity I heard the acting comparation on the same scene for the characters. English va did better in general for me, which is surprising because I'm familiar with the Japanese VAs and adore them.
    The English cast pull out the emotion and character better without making it generic anime voices. English Ardyn totally crush it and I prefer English approach on Luna's voice direction. One of the weakest in English for me is Gladio, probably because his VA natural voice is not heavy tank so he use his concentration more on retaining the voice than the emotion, but Japanese Gladio manage to pull out chill bro but still a mentor character. Japanese Prompto is nice and fun but the English gives even more depth to his character, like how his voice wavering a bit to show insecurities sometimes between his jokes.
    But of course everyone have their own opinion,

    Great Episode! I'm around six hours in the game and I'm enjoying it very much. And I feel that many of your observations are what makes it so enjoyable for me, too. Right now I don't really care about the greater story. It's the many, many little things that make it such a good experience. For example, when I first read about the photo-features I thought it would be nonsense and that I would just ignore it. But I find that I really like going through the pictures when Noctis and his friends make camp. And while the characters are walking stereotypes it is as you say - they care about each other in a very believable and relatable way. And I'm not talking about any cutscenes. I mean the little gestures, the few words they exchange here and there or even how they help each other in battle. I'm pretty surprised to see how effective this is.

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому +1

      For sure! The photo thing struck me as a gimmick that I would never want to interact with - by having it be automatic and having the photos not just be "KOOL COMBAT MOMENTS LOL" but sweet shots of characters caught in moments of exploration, or doing dumb poses in front of landmarks, it's things we can relate to as opposed to fighting massive monsters. Thanks for watching!

    The characters really are not voiced terribly. There are a few bad voices in the game, but the main characters are all voiced really well in my opinion. Noctis' voice is especially well done.

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому +1

      hsapin I should clarify, I'm talking about the English voices as opposed to the Japanese ones - haven't played with the Japanese ones.
      If you're also talking about the English voices, then I honestly can't fathom hearing that acting and thinking "this doesn't make me want to eat my own face."

      Writing on Games Lesson on judging bad and good acting. The difference isn't what you think but if it sounds like they're reading off of a script. It's one thing to hate the voices and want them changed. A different thing to call it bad acting. There are some moments in the game where the acting is flat out bad but for the most part they do their job well. If you want an example of truly bad voice acting listen to dubbing of hentai, fan dubs, and 90's VA in general . Listen to that stuff and try not to click away. The voice acting of today is more then passible. Yeah the Japanese voices sound more convincing but only because you aren't actually listening to them you're reading the subtitles and using their voices to emulate the emotion. Don't believe me? Turn off the subtitles and then judge. I'm not saying the English VAs are perfect but better then you want to believe.

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому +2

      PissedOffBeyond did you seriously think the voice acting was naturalistic? I can tell you, it's categorically not. Not that it needs to be (I think your definition of what defines good/bad voice acting is a little cut and dry) but don't try and tell me it doesn't sound like they're reading from a script. Every line is relentlessly over-acted, every sound has that quality of 90s anime dubs you apparently dislike, it's all bad.
      ...also, did you just tell me to watch hentai?

    • @PissedOffBeyond
      @PissedOffBeyond 7 років тому +2

      Writing on Games The dubbing of it, yes. I don't see the problem you're an adult. If you are in a relationship then sorry but otherwise I don't see the big deal. Also yes I can listen to them just fine. After my comment I played the game again and payed attention to how they said things and became a problem in the beginning but only because I decided to be judgemental( what i think they should have said) instead of asking if they sound like real people. They do for most part, oh and my definition may be direct but that's how acting works. If you can't fool people into believing your "act" it's not much of one now is it? I'm curious though what do you think when you hear their voices? I don't mean are they annoying I mean more of what do you think they should be saying or expressing instead.

    You know you're dealing with someone talented when you can't tell if the music was extracted from the OST of the game or not. That actually offered some pretty good insight in how to make an audience relate to the characters they're following, and it's amazing how this can really only be done with gaming - less because of the interactivity and more because of how long games have the privilege of being and how much of an introverted experience it is. It's interesting how this perceived humanity comes not from the actors but from the animators and the intensity of the gameplay that came before, thus, contrast. I wonder though, how this can be done with dialogue without feeling automated. There are only so many lines that can be said until repeating is necessary, and it's never unnoticeable.

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому +2

      Thank you man. I think the key to doing this through dialogue is to allude to character traits without feeling the need to outright SAY what those are. It lets the player fill in the blanks and gives an air of interactivity to the one part of the game that isn't normally interactive. With that, you still have dialogue, but you say more by saying less if that makes sense. I think dialogue and writing for games as a whole is still something the industry is really struggling with. Like you say, there's only so much you can do with a set amount of lines, and we're still in that mindset of getting movie writers to write movie scripts for things that aren't movies.
      I actually think that experimental literature is what we should be looking towards here. It's the reason I started this channel - I had studied English Lit and started to notice that a lot of the things that in literature are utterly mindblowing, are actually totally commonplace in games. Things like the placement of authorship on the reader, the use of pure detail to convey a narrative, how the experience of consuming the art IS the art, etc. - games are inherently experimental in my eyes. By looking to the principles of authors/theorists like Barthes, Brecht, Eco, etc., then we can perhaps see glimpses of where games should go from here.

    Well done. I"ve seen a few reviews on FFXV, and this one offers an insightful and different perspective. You are one of my favourite reviewers on youtube, especially when you throw in that last personal anecdote of going on road trips with your friends as a touring band. Gives me a glimpse of your life, and as a recently turned 30 yr old whose music dreams are fading (giving way to other new and different dreams might I add, so it's not all bad), it does bring back a pang of nostalgia from my own youth nonetheless. Well done sir!

    I'm not ashamed to say that in my life I've never really had that "core group" of friends. I'm not a shut-in, but I also never dedicated so much time to fostering relationships.
    FFXV hit me hard. You spend so much time with Noct and his friends; that sort of kinsmenship is universal. Even through the lenses of someone who can't exactly recall or relate to the sensations depicted in the game - it creates such an intense feeling of belonging and resilience.
    FFXV is an argument for friendship and relationship. If any game made me want to go out immediately after playing it - it was this one.

    I totally agree with your main point, that the bond between the characters and with yourself, and journey is the highlight of this game, although I think your review suffers from having only played 15 hours of it. Eventually you'll realize that the characters are more than typical anime archetypes and are very relatable, and very human. I actually enjoy the voice acting and find it a joy to come across new dialogue. The photography personalizes each player's own journey and I find that I care about the characters and want to feed them their favorite food if say, one helped me out a lot in battle that day. Later on, the team dynamic is tested, and even things like the speed you walk or the food you eat affects you emotionally.

    This is exactly what I loved about this game at the start and why I've all but stopped playing it 6 hours in. It got to a point where I do all this driving to get to a story mission but I decided to stop to take a picture of the meteor because, like you said, the road trip feeling and friendship are the best part. After a quick photo session I get back on the road only to find that that small side activity took up what remained of my day and I had to turn around and go back to the rest stop I came from. It felt like the game was punishing me for doing these side activities by making me return to my last checkpoint. I do plan on picking it back up but when I look at my stack of games to play, FFXV's tedium makes me more inclined to pick a different disc.

    there is one thing I would like to say, when speaking of the ridiculous complexity of their stories and the melodrama involved, I think that is something a lot of us final fantasy fans look for. we don't think that all games should do it or even that it is good. but we like the way square enix does it, gives it a unique personality as a game series. but what I really meant to say, is that I feel the rest points, the calms and the quiets, help give the contrast that these games always needed. they help the high exciting unrelatable and crazy experiences feel actually intense. they make the melodrama feel more real, knowing that these characters can be fun and silly and dorky gives that much more weight to the drama.
    when Noctis reacts to hearing about his father's death, it meant a whole lot more knowing that just before that he was like a kid in a candy shop when he got to go fishing.

      The road trip is just a framing device for a closer look at the bonds between these characters. The road trip allows those bonds to be communicated to the player without words. You don't need to have been on a road trip with your friends to understand how much they mean to you, so I'm guessing you'd probably still get something out of it. Just so happens that I could relate on another level, having been on a number of long road trips with friends myself.

      Yeah, I get you. Aside from things like turn based combat and random battles that ruthlessly segment exploration and combat, the dialogue and melodrama of FF has always been a little too rich for my blood. That's why it was so interesting to me that not only was I excited about this game pre-release, but that I ended up enjoying it so much.

  • @PeterAvastrat
    @PeterAvastrat 7 років тому +5

    I struggled with it. Being torn between a great and yet what felt to be an initially empty game. For me, as you say, what made it great was the quiet humanity in the moments. Despite not particularly enjoying the inbetween segments it was made all the worth it by the calm driving sections. We haven't seen many games do this and perhaps won't much until it is perfected. Admittedly I'm not a fan of open worlds. Good movies are succinct and say as much as possible (from footage, not necessarily dialogue) in the least amount of time. Open world games struggle with this intensely, they have the succinct and clean moments and yet still contain a boatload of un-cut scenes which have no relevance and provide no interest. Bland walking between quests, empty side-missions and attempts at filler. The Witcher 3, personally, is so far the only open world game I have played (I'll be honest I haven't played TOO many) that actually managed to make the open world inbetween moments relevant in the same way FFXV has in the driving segments. The movement between reflected the lifestyle of a Witcher, the animations did, the weather did.
    FFXV's saving grace was these moments and admittedly I cannot really yet see how it would have achieved it, though Witcher did, if it weren't for all the other unnecessary distractions that provide such stark contrast to these events.
    Also to be fair, I had only played about 3 1/2 hours as I didn't own the game but the tone and setting and everything of those hours was off, un-final-fantasy-like and quite odd. It was an identity crisis.

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому

      I get you. I really think the open world problem can be at least partially solved by, as you say, making the movement between areas as thematically and narratively consistent with the rest of the mechanics as possible. If you can somehow answer the question of WHY a character needs to traverse a great landmass or WHY they need that particular freedom, then you legit rid yourself of a lot of the baggage that comes with that design. I think FFXV does a decent job of that by saying "hey, it's four buds on a road trip." For me, that's all I really need. I didn't find it as open as some people are saying - obviously you can go anywhere you want, but I didn't feel I really needed to unless a quest sent me there. That's not a problem to me - if anything it's part of the solution to the problem. "This journey is already super long, why would we go somewhere we have no purpose to be?" I really think that justifying movement is a big part of why some open worlds are great and some aren't.
      As I say in the video though, I'm not a big FF guy, so the fact that this isn't seen as a 'typical FF game' is already doing a lot for me, haha.

    As a final fantasy fan who has not purchased xv and has little to no intention to before a major price cut, I have to applaud you Haimish for bringing up excellent points that have done more to garner my interest in this experience more than any piece of media distributed by SE. I would have to say that we're all very lucky Kickstarter was not around when VsXIII was first announced because I have been very upset with the seeming misdirection Tabaata has taken the team with this project since it has had its direction shifted towards something altogether soulless to me. This is an immense example of tried and true corporate interference affecting the greater artistic expression of its game second only to MGSV. Truly I wish this weren't the trend the gaming industry were going towards but sadly this is what we face in this corrupt economy. As fans, we have been utterly swindled by this nonsense that only robs us of experiences we can completely connect with. Its so unfortunate that despite the team's best efforts they could not transcend and overcome the ultimate direction Tabaata and the SE board of directors doomed the team to fulfill. Again, having not played the game, I know a lot of people reading this will tell me I'm wrong and should shut up. To those folks I say: you have been straight played fool and you are a hostage suffering stockholm syndrome by corporate greed that robs you of your time, money and passion. This shit is unacceptable and anyone sponsoring these malpractices are only hurting the unique artform that video games offer to our cultural generation.
    TLDR: this game is another grand disappointment by a once mighty group of creators

    This is probably the least expected bit of praise for a contemporary Final Fantasy Game. But it makes a whole lot of sense. You would always be travelling around the big open maps in these games, so now they've made character interaction an integral part of it. And during those scenes of the characters getting their XP and playing cards / chatting, is there actual dialogue?

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому +1

      It's all thematically consistent and actually justifies your characters moving through a large open world, so yeah, it's dope. As for the XP scenes, what is actually weird is that there's no dialogue, but there are still sound effects like footsteps and stuff - looks like they maybe should be talking? Really strange, but rarely detracts from the sentiment they're trying to get across. Should have definitely made those scenes 100% silent with the exception of the music though.

  • @thedemonbard322
    @thedemonbard322 7 років тому

    Well, you kinda stole the words out of my mouth. FF XV is wonderfuly mundane, but in a good way. It's the usual mundane of the fantasy genre, coming from a metanarrative standpoint, by all fantasy being pretty much the same, but an intentional feeling of things being very common. Yeah, there's a power plant made from a meteor held in place by a god, but no one in the setting cares, so you don't either. I'm not as negative in regards to the story and characters (what can I say, I enjoy some bad writting every once in a while), but I do agree that it's pretty convoluted and confusing, but the quiet moments more than makes up for it. And that's something that RPGs need way more: quiet moments. If everything is loud and "epic", then nothing is, and FF XV understands this pretty well.
    Anyways, great video as always, man. Keep up the great work.

    I think you were a bit harsh about the writing in the game. I haven't beaten it but based on what I've played its not really all that bad. It has issues for sure it's not perfect by any means and I even agree with some of the things you said but I just felt like you were needlessly scathing. That being said it's still a real good video that points out the merits of visual storytelling that is lacking in most games. I think more games can benefit from adding little details in their character's animations that tell us more about that person aswell as the bond they share with other characters.

    I can't say that the silent reflection in the game really impacted me. There were very few battles that were anywhere close to difficult (Main exception: coerls. Fuck those things), due both how easy the combat is and how easy it is to become overleveled. Combine this with the fact that you'll get Assassin's Creed 2 levels of money if you participate in the side content, and the result is that I end up not feeling like I've overcome anything. This makes any silent reflection the game attempts feel hollow to me.

    The voice acting isn't so bad - in the more mundane sections. It's downright cringeworthy in the main plot, and main plot stuff also sees Noctis go from "moody, but able to have fun" to "horrible amalgamation of Lightning's joylessness and Hope's whining." Like, plot related dialogue sounds like how my tabletop group voices our characters, which is not a good thing for a professional project.
    Honestly, I feel the game would have been much better if the rest of the plot were seriously scaled back, and the true focus of the game really was the roadtrip from start to finish. The game as it is feels like a great idea (the road-trip) stapled to the decaying corpse of whatever FF13 Versus was supposed to be for the Fabula Whatever Crystalthingy setting.

    But the relationship between Noctis and his friends, is what kept me hook. And the small details are great. For example, when the game begins, Prompto is the weakest member of the party, he even fights the worse by doing stupid show off moves, but later on, he gets stronger and, overall, he fights better, less flashy more practical moves, and even Gladio says so "You came a long way, Prompto!".
    Ironically enough, when you unlock prompto as a playable character, he is easily the most OP, lmao

    I was pretty intrigued by the game so till i took a look at the characters and... got turned down even more than i feel let down by FF13... I don't know why exactly but the Characters feel so... empty. They may act all they want but even somebody's weird laugh feelt less empty than the characters of 13 and now 15. But i have to agree with most of what you said. Hope it comes to PC for a reasonable price.
    Btw - i have played FF13 (only the first one) and ... i dropped it after around 9hours in... i just lost any interests at around that time.
    Also - English isn't my first language so sorry about bad grammar and so on.

  • @waraidako

    Now I think I see your problem here. You played with English dubs. The game was made with Japanese VO intended, all of the dialogue was written to make sense in Japanese, with a Japanese conversation structure and Japanese sensibilities, so the Japanese VO is excellent. The English dub was added later, and hobbled together to sort of have the same meaning, but also sort of sound like natural English speech, with the end result being that it fails at both.
    The very personality of the characters is changed with the English dub. Remember all of Prompto's shitty puns? Not there in the Japanese version.
    It's unfortunate that there aren't more accurate subtitles you can use specifically for the Japanese voices, so unless you speak Japanese a lot of it will still go unnoticed, but even just in the way they deliver their lines, I think it comes across. You showed the scene in the hotel room where they're reading the newspaper. Go look up the Japanese version of that and just listen to the way they speak and how different that scene becomes because of it. Noctis has like a tremble in his voice when he speaks, like a mix of sadness, fear, and anger. Yet in the English version he just sounds confused.
    It's like night and day. It's extremely disappointing how poorly handled the English VO was, considering how integral it is to the story and character development.

    The "normalcy" you talk about is entirely undone for me by the . . . utter fantasy of it all. I know it's called Final Fantasy, but the idea of being hungry and "scrounging for food" doesn't work for me when the food options you have (or at least the ones you showed) look like they come from a fine restaurant. The fact that you're driving in this fancy sports car and you and your friends are all dressed in "cool black" and wielding gigantic swords makes it all so completely absurd that I just can't take it seriously.
    This is subjective, I suppose, but just my thoughts on it. It's good it works for you, but . . . I cannot get into it.

So many useless characters with totally on-the-nose expository, melodramatic dialogue. Combined with that loathsome penultimate chapter, it didn't leave a great final impression.
      Still really enjoyed the game as a whole though! When the game focused on its clear strengths - the relationship between the four main characters and the road trip aspect - it was a blast.

      PS: The voice acting is not that bad, it is NOWHERE near Shenmue levels.

    • @WritingOnGames
      @WritingOnGames  7 років тому +1

      In all seriousness, that's cool he had such a profound effect on you! I just struggled to see him as much more than mere comic relief, despite some of the more intimate moments that did add some depth to his character. For me, I really appreciated how Ignis' main role was to look after the group-I enjoyed how despite his super serious demeanour, his weird quirk was cooking and baking. I really felt for him and the front he put up when certain spoiler-y circumstances befell him. A really good character despite some TERRIBLE voice acting.
      Speaking of which, I just cannot get behind this notion that the voice acting is anywhere near good. Weirdly, Noctis' performance is probably the best, despite the writing for his character being some of the worst. Aside from that, I really just thought it was bad. Japanese voice acting sounds alright from what I've heard, but maybe that's because I don't know the language so I'm distanced from it. The English cast did nothing for me. If it did for you, again, that's cool!
