I remember playing tennis with him in 1990 I think. He had come for a pole vault tournament in Grenoble in France and the next morning he trained at the stadium then came to me and my friend, I recognized him immediately (we were waiting to play our match ) and asked if he could play tennis with us. We lent him a racket and then we played for about 15 minutes. He was playing pretty well. A very beautiful memory and a very great athlete.
His son went on to be a professional tennis player.

I remember Sergey, he was fantastic. What was obvious to me was that he was so capable, he would break world records in small increments at the next meeting and the next meeting, picking up the WR bonuses the venues offered. One smart cookie.
It really doesn't take much intelligence to realize that you can raise the world record by 1 cm at a time. He was so far ahead of the others that he had the luxury of using that opportunity.
Exactly, he was always flying with so much clearance but why leave the money on the table.
Bubka for me is clearly in the top 10 athletes all time, including all sports. His abilities, his long career and his incredible mental strength made him unique. World champion for 14 !!! years, 35 WR a real legend.

Great video! Sergey Bubka deserves a proper deep dive though. For the reasons mentioned in the other comments - bounty hunting records giving incentive for tiny margin victories, older pole technology vs modern tech, rumors and legends of heights he was able to clear in practice - and with Duplantis in the spotlight, the world is crying out for TRP to give us the info we need to decide if Sergey Bubka is the one, true, G.O.A.T. of Track and Field...

I remember watching this, it was amazing. The 80's was a great decade for track and field, albeit much with questioned legitimacy, but this competition was still one of the highlights of the decade.
Sergei is an absolute legend, but unlike most events in track, only high jump and pole vault allow you to choose what height you attempt (a runner doesn't know his time, a long jumper doesn't know his distance). This is why he broke the record so many times. He was able to increase it 1cm at a time. Still incredible..... but theres a reason why his number is so ridiculous compared to other events.

The point is that in pole vault you can set the bar at 1cm above world record height. If you clear it, the height of the bar is marked as the record. The margin by which you clear it is irrelevant, so Sergey was never at risk of jumping too high and bumping the record up too much in one go

Bubka broke the world record so many times because that was what the Soviets paid him for. That is why the record went up .01m at a time. He got paid for every record.
I always wonder, if he was't being paid in that manner... How high could he have jumped?
I honestly believe Mondo Duplantis would have beaten his world record as his jumps are significantly higher than anything Bubka ever did, but it'd be interesting to see what Bubka could have done.
One of my former coaches mentioned that Bubka cleared 6.30 m in a training session in 1989, but that's rumors. I think Bubka was able to jump that high: biomechanic experts analyzed his victory jump of the 1997 world championchips in Athens. He celared 6.01 m but his actual height was way above. The experts came to the conclusion that he could have cleared 6.25 to 6.30 m with that jump.

Annoying if true, I get the Financial incentive to improve the WR by the minimum increment but its also denied a truly stellar record for the ages. 6.30m in 1989 would have been like Sotomayors high jump 2.45 or Powells 1991 Long jump ... ie a record that transcends the era.
Even Mondo, who is clearly a special athlete, would struggle to get up there.
@@a-liquis6456 I cleared 4.00m in training, didn't get anywhere near that in competition, but perfect jumps are rare, if you look at the 6.16 from Lavillenie, he was well over that mark and sometimes you see Duplantis with huge space left on 6.05, but you have to do that on the right moment and Bubka was great a that, but polevaulting is not like long jump, in which the perfect jump will be the absolute best you can do.
I’d like to see you do a longer piece on him. First guy to jump 6m and the most dominant vaulter to date.

I don't know the exact number, but Haile Gebrselassie was close to that. Paavo Nurmi might have also had more, but those are old and records were murkier back then.

I thought after the first 35 records he went on to set another 31 records making it 66. I think he says it around 2:40

Not even close to being the shortest lived world record. In the women's 1980 Olympic pentathlon (as it was then), Rukavishnikova finished the final 800m event to set a new world record only for Tkachenko to cross the line 0.4 seconds behind her and break the new world record with a higher points score. Imagine being a world record holder for just 0.4 seconds!

@@cajun5150 Its interesting, Rukavishnikovas record was never actually ratified although I cannot find out why. The same thing happened in the 1972 Olympics with Heide Rosendahl and Mary Peters.
I remember watching it live on tv... it was long time ago... that Night Sergej defined that the Frenchs where definitively some steps back and then his era was open

You cannot compare todays world record to Bubkas world record. The track, spikes, pole, training, conditions, rest mentality, physiotherapy, supplements etc... were different back then. If he was from todays generation he would jump even higher.

Vigneron barely made it over the bar though, while Bubka had room to spare. A LOT of room. Even when you're watching his 1993 indoor record of 6,15m, it wasn't even close.
And if the progress in pole vault is anything like the one in running, with improvements in training, nutrition and equipment (PEDs? There was certainly progress made... but obviously all athletes are clean until proven otherwise), I'm fairly sure Bubka would break 6,20, maybe even 6,25. He probably did 6,20 more than once, the bar just wasn't set to that height.

Bubka certainly knew how high he could go. I do wonder how high he could have reached if he went for his absolute best at his peak.
Interestingly, impressive as this is, this feat comes second behind the achievement of Jonathon Edwards who broke the world record for the triple jump twice in two successive jumps in Gothenberg in 1995. To show how impressive this achievment was....his second effort that day is still the world record today....26 years later.
But there would be seven other jumpers between Edwards two WRs. In this case it could be the jump right after, if Bubka did it in his first attempt on 5,94, as there probably were only two vaulters left in the competition.

@@david2804me I think the fact that Bubka beat the WR 35 times was a WR in beaten WRs and that he lost it for some minutes was WR for shortest time between two WRs.

@@niklasnilsson4705 OK but I stand by my original comment that Edwards beating the world record twice in two successive jumps in 1995 and that the second jump is still the world record today, 26 years later, is the greater achievement. BTW, of the 35 times Bubka broke the world record, most of the time it was his own world record which he was improving by one centimetre increments each time because there was a financial bonus each time he broke the WR.....this approach is only possible in two events...the high jump and the pole vault. Edwards' beat the previous world record by 18 cms in his first jump and then by a further 13cms on his second jump...sadly, one cannot count that as 31 world records.
@@david2804me and even it he did it 31 times, it's still not 35 :) , not to mention consistency over the years. It is quite different to be in top shape for 5 years or for a more than a decade, injuries and all the rest which comes with being at the very top.

I wasn't a competitive pole vaulter in high school, but did love to practice when I had time after practicing my events (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, and running anchor on various relays). Best I was able to do was 12'6". Our best guy was highly competitive regularly clearing 12'10". It's so hard at that age to get over 13' unless you're on a team that trains duing indoor and outdoor seasons.

AS much as I admire Bubka, pole vaulting is a unique "record setting" event in that the athlete can determine in advance that he or she is only going to up a record about 1/600th of the record. (high jump is around 1/200th, so in a sense 3 times "harder.") Considering how hard it is to jump over 6 meters I would never hold this against a record holder, and Sotomayor raising the HJ 2.43, 2.44. 2.45 is a distant second to what Bubka did. But really the only comparison might be in the sport of weightlifting where Lasha Talakhadze has broke like 20 WR's in the last 4 years. Bubka is the PV GOAT and Mondo has the next ten years to prove otherwise.

If I remember correctly, the shortest-lived world record in track and field history was in the old woman's pentathlon in the 1980 Olympics when a world record was set at the finish line of the 800-meter run only to have another athlete finishing half a second behind end up with a higher total score.

Clarification: Bubka should be heralded for the duration he held the world record, not the number of times he set it. It will never happen again because no athlete would take such an approach. Rather, they would do their best to put the record "out of reach".
No reason to trust ANY records from former Soviet block countries. Sorry, systematic doping was absolutely rampant there. It took skill, but every single one of them is unfortunately tainted.

It is said that bubka could jumo 6.30 m at training , and would still be recorld holder if he made it in oficial event. Look at one of his last world record, he can be above like 20cm off the bar, while the others barely make it.

Bubka once broke the world record several times in a meet (which he had won prior to going for the world record). He kept raising the bar thinking he would get a bonus for each height. Only to learn that the Bonus was only for once. That is one of the reasons why once a World Record is set now days that they do not go for a higher mark (and why they only push it up 1 CM at a time). Think of what Mondo Duplantis could have done if he just kept jumping when he set the current records.

If Mondo can raise his world records indoor and out (1 centimeter at a time llike Bubka) 7-8 inches over the next ten years he could do the same..... it took Bubka 11" over 10 years. never say never.
Bubka was an amazing athlete to be sure. There is one caveat to the number of WRs he set. He was no dummy, as he was rewarded financially by the USSR for every record. You can see this in how easily he often cleared his previous WR. Each record was a very small increment higher; this was by design. He only went high enough to set a new record, and collect another payday. I don't blame him; that was the reality of making money in the USSR(there was no such thing as an amateur).
Common myth there. It's not easy for enyone to brake a record and it's only very natural to set the bar one cm over when you can choose. Probably you think two cm would be to much. It's almorst impossible to then jump AGAIN even higher, when you are exhausted after a long competition and your best ever performance just achieved.

If you can jump 6m+ high then 5,94m is much less...it´s like in weight-lifting...only 3 attempts...everybody chooses 1st the 100% weight and try to be always in a save area(where they can lift it for sure), only if there is a title they go in the 50:50-area.
I'll let him and his country feel proud for about 3 minutes, then I'll defeat him with ease, and continue to break my own record another 31 times.

Bubka was one of the few people who used longer than 17' poles. Those things were like 2" across. Like freaking telephone poles.
There's no limitation on length or material.
Do not be fooled, the pole will never make up for bad technique.

When I was young, I always saw this guy on the Chinese news on TV. He was always breaking his own records in this boring sport and I was always thinking:" Who the hell come up with such a silly sport”
Then one day, I heard on the news: "This guy has broken the record for breaking records". That was about 30 years ago and I remembered clearly that I was totally NOT inspired!!
Today, with graphene poles, the record has been exceeded by 33%.
