  • On Monday we saw Tangmere bring the GB XVI into Carlisle where it was taken over for the Scottish part of its nine-day tour by a pair of Black Fives.
Today we see the process reversed. I attempted to film the train high up in the Scottish Southern Uplands but the weather was against me, so I headed to Lockerbie where the train stopped to water the locomotives, and then went to Carlisle for the change of traction.

Nice filming of the black 5's being watered and Tangmere getting plenty action recently.👍

Thank heaven for Tangmere - without her the steam scene at Carlisle would be almost non-existent at present. Let's hope that WCR can get their coach door problems sorted, one way or another, quickly.

I noticed that they weren’t just a pair of Black Fives, but both were NAMED Black Fives. The Spam Can looks wonderful!! It’s great to see Spam Cans up north!!

Although 44871 has been named in the past ("Sovereign") it isn't carrying nameplates today. Tangmere is such a frequent visitor to Carlisle these days that the border city is almost home turf for her. Indeed, without Tangmere there'd be very few steam trains getting to Carlisle while WCR Mark 1 coaches are banned so - thank you Tangmere!

44871 isn’t named Sovereign anymore so hasn’t carried a nameplate for many years.

A good day out Nice to see the locos at Lockerbie. I was also focused on the wrong one when she slipped, they seemed to be having difficulty getting the buckeye to disengage. Also you asked me about linespeed through Lockerbie. It is 110mph for ordinary trains and 125mph for the Pendolino so they are going full speed through there.

Thanks Colin. That's the most driving I've done in one day for a long time - most of my driving is between home and Dumfries these days - 10 miles each way by the long route, 8 by the back road which is desperately potholed nowadays and bad for the tyres and suspension - Land Rover territory!

@@schoolshorts Our roads are in a terrible state as well. I have not been on my bike for over 2 years now and think I would find a lot more dangerous pot holes now. I feel like going out but not sure my hip will now.

Oops, how did that happen, originally I had worked out the train was returning via the west coast main line and had planned to follow it there. For some reason totally unknown to me I was subsequently lead to believe it was returning via the east Coast line, with the sad result I missed it Boo Hoo. So glad to see you managed to capture it for me instead well done and thankyou again.

The train was always intended to travel back by the East Coast - that was the published plan. The change to the West Coast only appeared online the previous day. My original intention was to film it at London Road or possibly somewhere along the Tyne Valley line. I imagine there would be a number of people similarly caught out. Glad you managed to see it even if only online. Best wishes.

Superb video Tim. I did not get to Carlisle on Friday so especially good to see your footage. Enjoyable drone footage from Lockerbie also. Regards, Jeff.

A pity you had weather trouble at Elvanfoot but you certainly made up for it! I dont think anyone caught the B5 slipping when pushed up to the train. for uncoupling

An enormous amount of editing, a very late night, a bad migraine - but worth it all in the end, I think. As for the slip - I had my back to it, heard it but had no idea what was going on!

Do any C Class get as far north as Carlisle? That’s my largest model locomotive at the moment. It’ll be a Battle of Britain Class after the last Sunday in August!!

I presume you're referring to the Wainwright 0-6-0s built in the first decade of the 20th century. I think it's highly unlikely that we'll ever see one in this part of the world. As far as I know, only one has been preserved - on the Bluebell Railway.
