I met him when I was studying singing in Milano. Gracious, warm and very down to earth. Happy to talk shop with a student. Still have fond memories, 30 years later.
He nails it. Every note, and some I didn't even realize were there. After listening to Alva sing, you'd swear Mozart made some kind of divine pact. Hands down, the best Mozart tenor I've ever heard.
This is magnificent. Alva's breath control on the long sustained runs is equaled only by John McCormick and Stuart Burrows, and if I observe that Alva and the conductor are not always together, this is a minor quibble which will happen in a live performance and in no way detracts from one of the best performances of this aria I've ever heard. Bravo.
A golden voice, phenomenal breath control and coloraturas out of this world for a male voice - this is one of the greatest lyrical tenors of all time. He turned 93 a few days ago. A belated happy birthday, dear Luigi Alva!
This is a total WOW! Exceptional beauty of line, clean coloratura, and what a gorgeous voice! But the blow away is the magnificent breath control - is just amazing. And he does a wonderful job in bringing a pretty lame character to life. This is the height of elegance and musicality.

He has a very beautiful voice of lyrico which I like rather than spinto or dramatico. I am always impressed with his voice and rendition. I hope someone would post his singing 'ideal' and 'sogno' which made me like him when I heard them for the first time over the radio in 1968.
Solo quel Voglio... Grande Lucho Alva
+Patrick Tobin So this is 1960? I have the Giulini recording of Don Giovanni and he was just as fantastic in it. And so were all the sopranos in it, especially the young Joan Sutherland as Donna Anna.
I couldn't agree more! Among his many attributes, I cannot believe this beast's breath support. That long coloratura passage in just one breath! And he didn't even need to take it like some ridiculous gulp. I just don't think anyone can parallel that!
Excelencia sin Par!!! Caro Maestro LUIGI ALVA!!! Delicia y Maestría!!! BRAVO!!! BRAVISSIMO!!! Mil Gracias!!!

an excellent performance of this difficult aria; I had not heard Alva before, thank you for posting. Better interpretation imo than some of the really well-known tenors on YT (except McCormack).
I have been singing this aria for over a decade and it has never become easy for me....Though many people say I sing it well. So if I could offer some encouragement, dont worry about it being perfect. For all you know Luigi Alva is working very hard, he just knows how to hide it. Or he is a freak and it is easy. Either way this is a hard piece, so just enjoy the genius of Mozart. I will post a video of me singing it so you can hear what I mean.
I agree with you completely, Luigi Alva is my favourite tenor and this is one of his best pieces.. John McCormack sang at a different time and this is one of his best pieces, Stuart Burrows does well too. they would be my top three.
Where did you find this hypnotic footage? And is there anymore where there came from? I've seen the Dalla Sua Pace, but I've still got an appetite for the great Alva in this formidable1960 version of Don Ottavio!
Nobody does it better. I mean nobody. Technique, tone and voice control. Burrows, Alva, McCormack... this era had several masters and today none. Random life...
I've been trying to find another tenor who can do that Amazing single breath phrase about one third of the way through (Not knowing Italian I cant identify the exact place but its dead clear and stunning) this great aria - its amazing and delivered with no fuss or hesitation - as if to say (no problem to me). Is there another one out there??
A lot of young tenors are doing the run in one breath now, many great tenors are still not doing it, but all must have taken notice of Alva's performance 62 years ago now, and he is still alive at 95.
+Ken Akey I agree... even Björling's. His coloratura is good, but he doesn't quite make it with the breath control. So I wonder how the current Peruvian sensation sounds on this aria. (Juan Diego Flórez) I just listened to Flórez do this and he doesn't quite make it in the breath control. Not bad, but not as good as this one. Here in Peru, Luigi Alva is known as Luis Alva and at 88 years old, he is still somewhat active in the musical community.
+Dale Erwin over the past couple days I have listened to dozens of renditions of Il mio Tesoro. Concerning breath control I found one who, imo, gets the breathing right. It is Franciso Araiza. His rendition is worth the listen.
