My 67 must be grounding out because with I turn on the key it honks. But this has saved my car from being stolen several times in the past 47 years I've owned it. That and the steering lock.
1971 through 1979 Beetles the ground circuit starts with the steering column itself. It is not isolated nor is the steering column bearing, making the steering wheel itself grounded. When you push the horn button the ground is sent through a wire to the contact ring which is bolted to the bottom of the steering wheel car. That ring contacts a contact tab on the turn signal switch which is connected to a brown wire. The brown wire runs into the turn signal switch wiring conduit which runs down the steering column. At the bottom of the steering column the conduit connects to the turn signal steering column harness and plug which runs into the trunk. In trunk the slightly larger gauge brown wire (there is a smaller gauge brown wire as well which is for the headlight relay circuit, not the horn) connects with a shrouded connector to the brown wire from the left headlight harness that connects to the horn and completes the circuit when the button is pressed. Chances are there is a short in the horn pad or the contact ring wire.
I got a bus that didn't come with a horn button or spring and don't see anyplace to connect the wire and trying to figure out if order a new button from you guys would it come with a connection or could I be missing something else? Thanks for the advice
The short in my horn has acted as an alarm for years. If the wheels are turned just so and the key is turned on, the horn will go off and wont stop. haha
The tank was not installed when we received the car for wiring. Removing the tank makes accessing the shaft much easier but it could also be accessed through the left wheel well.
I took my 67 bug in for repairs and the guys said he fixed my horn, but it still doesn't work. I took it to another shop and the guy started complaining about how hard they were to fix and that he would charge $150 just to take out the steering wheel and shaft. Boohoo. Then he said he fixed my gas gage and I just ran out of gas while it was showing full. Are there no good VW repair shops anymore?

Just went thru this with a '67 Bug. Wire at the coupler was broken, easy fix.
I have a 71 Super that blows the horn every time I turn on the left turn signal...Just about at my whits end trying to get it fixed...

It depends on the year Bus and which steering wheel but most stock Bus horn buttons are a "self contained" unit with a wire connection.
