Love this. I live in the only Finnish-American area of the United States, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Trolls and mineshaft lore play into some of our micro-region culture - people who live in the main area (Lower Peninsula) of Michigan, accessible by traveling south across the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere are even called Trolls for living under the bridge. I live on property bordering an old Ghost town full of hills and mineshafts and feel it’s very trollish 👹 🍻 Most of the area is heavily forested. Perhaps they migrated here with all of our Finnish loggers and miners
This was a very nice conversation to watch, thank you guys! Lmao the most Danish/Northern German thing in this video is the near constant use of “mmmmmm” with a different tone as a full response to a statement followed by a small pause and then a thoughtful explanation of said “mmmmm” 🤣 my great uncle was born near the Danish-German line and he would always do that too
This was so interesting. I love learning about folklore that overlaps my own. In Iceland there are local news about road work having to pause because of so many mishaps happening. Many believe this is do to an elf stone (home) being disturbed and them playing tricks on the humans. Many times roads and other building plans are changed and rerouted because of this. We also have people who are contacted to play as an interpreter of sorts but they bring offerings and try to find an agreement between elves and humans, esp around building on or near elf rocks.
I appreciate you both speaking English. I find a barrier as I can not read any books written in the Scandinavian tongues. My grandfather immigrated in 1912 to the US from Sweden. Jhalmar didn’t pass on language or culture.
I’m commenting as I watch 😉 The thought of trolls and elves moving house in big groups is so funny. We have the Hidden people and they are known to move on New Year’s Day. It’s said that that is the time we may get a glimpse of them. They are thought to be very beautiful and well dressed in very intricate clothes as well as loving anything that shimmers and is gold ✨
Thank you. I ran in to this in a Norse/Heathenry group, asked, and wanted to know more This is awesome! Where can I follow this person? This is so sad. ❤❤❤
I'm a newly converted pagan specifically Norse, the community is so accepting and as a trans woman that means everything. I did my first ritual to Odin and Freya and flet them, one thing I know for sure is I'm not an atheist anymore. Love your channel it's helped a lot!
So…what would you call a practitioner who does use bits and pieces from different practices? (Just referring back to the topic of people using practices deriving from Trolldom but not using all of it and still calling it so.) Is that necessarily a bad thing or is it seen more as just trying to find yourself in the craft and what resonates with you? Some people such as myself don’t have traditions and folklore passed down to them and struggle with trying to find a “magical identity”. Just curious what your thoughts are. Loved the episode. ✌️❤️
I guess simply eclectic? There’s not a label for everything ☺️ and it’s definitely not a bad thing! The only bad thing would be doing modern stuff and calling it Trolddom ☺️
Thank you very much, it was very interesting! I'm from Berlin and yes, here in Germany it feels very empty as far as spirits are concerned. At least where I've been so far. Also, I love the 2nd Merseburg charm, I used it twice on our dog when he was limping, as a kind of first aid, it worked wonderfully. (Of course we had him checked by the vet, it was nothing, he had probably just stretched).
Today I have a special guest that is me.. oh not me, Mie. Lol

I didn’t know that about UP. I’m from SW Ontario. Any online info I can read more about this?
