Worked at a motel in the mid 90s, took a smoke break out back and a dude hit me up for a smoke, turned out he was Bootsy's tour bus driver. He took me on a little tour of the bus, totally funked out inside, looked like a disco club from the 70s. Way cool.

OMG this was amazing!!! I am an absolute beginner of Bass, been practising for maybe a month or so on and off. just learned my first bit of theory from this guy, and now he is actually teaching me how to play funk with my friends! This guy is a Godsend!
Dude. Guitarist for years. Just started playing bass to lock my timing in and make me really LISTEN to the drums. Gotta say your teaching style is on the mark - get em' groovin' first and having fun then sneak in the theory until they get curious about that of which you speak. "You keep saying One-Four-Five. What does the mean?" - "Funny you should ask!" Gonna follow your lessons as if I am a 14-year-old newb. Love this lesson, gonna be three-and-four-and -UGHing all day.
When I first started playing years ago, my uncle told me about the 'Bootsy Rule'. Seriously, you can incorporate that rule into just about any type of music. Once I got that down, my playing was 200000x times better than ever before.
@@BassBuzz Hey, thanks for the reply! I was lucky enough, thankfully. My uncle is a great musician, played in everything from funk to punk bands. I think I was maybe 15ish, a teenager nonetheless, and he told me about the 'Bootsy Rule'. He taught me that no matter what I was doing with my sloppy attempt at bass fills, as long as I could bring it back to the root-note, all is well.
You have a point, but learn the theory too. Once you know your theory, you will suddenly realize you have a 4th, 5th and b7 below your root that you can go to as well.
@Dave Wallace You can know what works fairly well without having to know every nuance of musical theory, as these videos show. I also advocate learning theory, but it's far from necessary if all you want to do is jam with your buddies in the garage while having a beer or six.
As a guitarist, I recognize the notes in the "funk box" as part of the A Minor pentatonic scale. But with frets 5 and 7, playing funk, blues, jazz, there's so much to play within that sweet spot of notes
I've been sharing the Bootsy video and doing play-alongs with my students for years, but this adds so much more to the lesson. Really nicely presented and concise, too. Barely an "um" in 15 minutes. Truly well done, and it shows you THE key to holding the funk pocket. Seriously, this is a perfect piece of instruction, that leaves the young player with a solid tool in their box they can use forever in the first 2 minutes. Right on! I started learning 5 months ago as a lefty! I started with a re-strung Jazz Fender bass and now have graduated to a “true” left-handed Jazz Fender so now everything is in the right place for me. It’s been hard finding videos of left-handed players. Your videos are awesome and funny. You just break it down so nicely and simply and it doesn’t hurt my brain to try and mimic your playing …even though you’re playing on the wrong side. 😂 🙏🏾
I've been playing bass for 20 years and when I learned about the "1" just a couple years ago, my improvisation and funk riffs just instantly came alive. KEEP IT ON THE ONE BABY! that's all you got to do. 😁

Aside from your excellent presentation of the lesson, what I really appreciate your inclusion of written notation to visually hammer it home. Well it´s so funny because literally 6 months ago I talked to a drummer about playing funk music and he told me about when he saw James Brown live back in the day ... well what he said was when I told him I´d like to start a band and play funk bass: "It´s not that easy you can´t just pick up a bass and play (good) bass" Actually I am not a (music) beginner, but I hear the "bootsy rule" for the first time. Mind blowing lesson!

Josh you have just scored 5* with me. You are very helpful with funk which seems to be in my blood because I get all fired up when I hear this stuff. Thank you. Thanks for the lesson.
Amazing the way you teach. You show the pentagram with the notes, and for someone that doesn’t have the theory you teach in an easy way. So people are able to play even if they don’t know the theory, and can learn the theory at the same time.
if you look closely, the notes between the markings of one *are jazz notation* types, sixteenth notes with breaks and spaces. Bootsy in an interview said he admires *Mingus and Lonnie Mack* .

Hey Josh. Thanks for the lesson! Being a complete novice to the bass and to learning music your lessons have been extremely helpful in navigating how to play.
Scott @Scott's bass lessons is amazing; but that's the downside for me. Even though I've been playing a little over 10 years He speaks and teaches in such advanced terms its hard to follow. Josh is easy to understand and gives practical advice you can apply the very next time out playing regardless if you're a beginner or seasoned. Thanks Josh!
Man, you are awesome! Congratulations for your videos! I’ve just find out your channel! Thank you very much! I hit the subscribe button on the first video, for sure!
I know theory like the back of my hand. These videos are so refreshing because it allows me to return to the most important thing about music: how it sounds. From a 'how to enjoy making music' standpoint, this video is awesome, even though my theory mind wants to pull it apart. You've helped me really enjoy picking up bass and learning how to groove. Thanks very much for that.
You're welcome! Glad you're integrating the theory with the actual sound of music (like, not the Julie Andrews musical). Theory should help us actual make better music / appreciate music more, or it's not doing its job!
Flashlight by Parliament was the song that got me hooked to Funk as a 12 year old. It was the music of my time and I believed that Parliament's music would inspire later musicians forever. Many songs have since then had sampled bits of Parliament's songs to date. Simple but very groovy stuff. A must for any bass player.

Ok, man. This is the best tutorial I've seen! Got my girlfriend a Bass and I haven't been able to put it down! You've made it possible to play along with plenty of songs. Thank you! (You are the only thing I've ever subscribed to btw)
Thanks Todd! Sounds like you might need to buy your girlfriend another bass. 😬
Love this...You have basically all my favs by Bootsy in this video love it.
Thanks Thumper! Bootsy's the man. :)
I have been looking for many years for a no BS bass lessons, and this is the first lesson on you tube i went through the whole lesson, i have subscribed and have hit the bell thank you
Great vid, Josh. Funkin awesome!!!
I started playing bass again after many years off and I was looking for some basic tips and information and your video is spot on. Awesome job!!!
Best Bass lessons I've stumbled across yet. Easy to understand, and the tabs are right there for you to follow along or pause if need be. Definitely looking forward to more.
Thanks T.J., I appreciate that! More to come. :)
Awesome tutorial! Total noob here who has owned a bass for one week now and this has got me really motivated because funk is the number one thing I want to be able to play.
This is just brilliant, thanks for being inclusive in the way you teach! Cheers, from Australia.
You're welcome Stu, thanks for watching. 😁
Josh you have just scored 5* with me. You are very helpful with funk which seems to be in my blood because I get all fired up when I hear this stuff. Thank you. Thanks for the lesson.
You're welcome Franko!
This was really helpful AND fun for a new bass player! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Man you have helped me so much. I'm a 58yr old retired and just needed a hobby thank you.
Excellent lesson. Thanks for posting. Love Bootsy!
Thank you, you're welcome!
I believe this is the most important video I've ever watched.
Amazing the way you teach. You show the pentagram with the notes, and for someone that doesn’t have the theory you teach in an easy way. So people are able to play even if they don’t know the theory, and can learn the theory at the same time.
Thanks Leonardo!
if you look closely, the notes between the markings of one *are jazz notation* types, sixteenth notes with breaks and spaces. Bootsy in an interview said he admires *Mingus and Lonnie Mack* .
That’s was a great class on funk playing. I wish you were around in the 70’s.
Thanks Eugene, I wish I was around then too! So many shows I wish I'd been able to see...
Incredibly helpful video. Never in my bass-learning life have 15 minutes been so well spent. I'm subscribing today. Thanks you, Josh.
I love ur teaching skills. U have help me so much and I thank you for this, I almost gave up playing . But I just kept going with ur videos And I am loving it again ☺️🎸🎼🎧 thank you Josh top man
Glad I could help! So glad you didn't give up. Keep keepin' it funky. :)
I’m getting an awful lot out of these videos!! Your teaching style is fun and addictive!! Keep up the great work!!! Btw... you crack me up!!! KEEP IT FUN-KY!!!!
Thank you!
Stay funky, bros.
I was on the fence about getting "Beginner to Badass"... read the review, went to the forums, trying to get a read on whether or not it was worth it. Then like everything else I just came back to the free stuff on UA-cam but you are such a good teacher I am heading back to the site... take my money foo'. Take it I said! :D Thanks for great easy to digest content. I am looking forward to checking out the paid stuff.
Thanks Sean! Hope you dig the course. :)
Thanks a lot. I discovered your channel a few days ago and i love the way you teach !! greetings from Chile
(by the way, thanks for the subtitles)
Thank you! Glad the subtitles are helpful.
Hey Josh. Thanks for the lesson! Being a complete novice to the bass and to learning music your lessons have been extremely helpful in navigating how to play.
Great channel man. I’m a piano/guitar/vox guy but this really inspired me to finally go for picking up the bass!!!
Thanks Chris, have fun funking it up on bass!
Very well done!
Got bass on my birthday and this helps so much not to use guitar as a furniture! Thank you!
Wow, so simple. Im really learning a lot from your videos, thank you so much
You're welcome Andrew!
The FUNK is a major reason I wanted to pick up the bass in the first place. Good stuff!!
Funk not only moves, it can remove, dig? 😎
Love how you don’t assume people know anything!! Great job!
Thanks Matthew!
Thanks Josh!
you are a freaking genius, i was stock in a funk piece, because i did not follow your instructions, now make sense.
Man, you are awesome! Congratulations for your videos! I’ve just find out your channel! Thank you very much! I hit the subscribe button on the first video, for sure!
Thank you Bruno!
These lessons are very helpful...
This video is life changing. I'm going through all your videos from oldest to newest and will become a bass master thanks to you. Thank you!!
Bootsy's "I'd rather be with you" ... Especially his solos in the live versions.
Yesss Flashlight is the s**t.
"You just gotta play the wrong notes so well it sounds right" -victor wooten
Great video! Just picked the bass up again and wanted to learn how to play funk - this video just sent that drive to play through the roof!
Thanks Sean! Have fun funkin' it up. :)
I'm new to the channel and I LOVE IT!!!! Keep up the great work. I learned a lot from this one video.
Thank you, more to come! Glad you learned something. :)
Men i just funked up a bass for the first time, im one with the groove and so are you my great teacher. I will never thank you enough, but anyway thanks
yeah, I am so glad you added tab to your lesson I love watching your video but at times you go so fast keeping up is frustrating for a beginner. thanks so much for sharing.
Hey Pora, sorry the pace is frustrating, I try to move at a pace that works for as many people as possible in these UA-cam videos. I move more methodically and gradually in my full beginner course if you wanna check it out - www.bassbuzz.com/lessons/beginner
Nice Bootsy funk formula coverage. You are The One!
