  • The Twa, also known as Batwa, are a pygmy people who were the oldest recorded inhabitants of the Great Lakes region of central Africa. Current populations are found in the nations of Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the eastern portion of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2000, they numbered approximately 80,000 people, making them significant minority groups in these countries

Very beutiful song. The musical instruments are simply fantastic ; the dancing women and the little children are all gyrating joyfully 2 the very African drum beat.. Dress them well and put them on the stage, they will win an African Oscar Award!

those "trees" in the background are actually small bushes, making these pygmies extremely small, and also susceptible to ant attacks.

This isn't really authentic African music, it's been heavily Western influenced, as can most evidently be heard by the Western Pop standard 1-4-5 chord progression, and seen by the guitar it's being played on.
Given that Western influence has been seeping into Africa ever since the first settlers arrived there, I think finding genuine African music unaffected by it would be very difficult these days.
As for any records claiming to have captured the "essence" of African music - these were recorded by Western companies, almost certainly employing a producer whose job would have been to ensure that the final sound appealed to the musical tastes of Western audiences, such that enough records could be sold at a profit to make it worthwhile their investment. He would have had ultimate artistic control over the project and could change any aspect of it he deemed to conflict with their business interests. This all makes me wonder just how authentic they really are. I'm already hearing hall reverb on one recording and fade ins and fade outs. Since when did African villagers become known for singing in halls?
