- Ep. 101 1/2 BONUS: MAKING A SIMPLE CUSTOM MOSAIC ROSE BOUQUET!
I introduce you to a special lady who is celebrating her 90th birthday this year! Then I show how to build a simple rose, starting with a darker center in a rounded shape and adding red stained-glass petals. Some are curved to fit and some overlap a bit. Lots of glass nipping ensues. I opt for six roses in the composition as my dear Aunt Dorothy has six children. I use a variety of opaque and translucent glasses to create interest and proceed to build a rose WITHOUT GLUING! When I reach the outer petals, I opt for lighter red hues.
TIP: DO NOT BRUSH GLASS SHARDS OFF YOUR WORK SURFACE WITH YOUR HAND!!!
Next, I apply clear contact paper and trim the excess. Then I use my studio wisk broom to tidy up the shards. Each rose took 10-20 minutes to build and tape.
Then the magic happens: I bring in the other pre-made roses and start composing and adhering the pieces to my 8"x10" substrate. The simple method of building mosaic flowers was inspired by the work of Sue Smith Mosaics. You can watch her videos here: / suesmithglassmosaics
Note: I found the contact paper a bit of a nuisance and tried to remove it before the Weldbond had set up and found it best to wait just a bit longer so the pieces don't lift.
Minor adjustments were made, mainly to the stems and leaves as I nipped them to fit. It was definitely the fastest method I have ever used for making a mosaic!
The next day I came in with 50/50 Weldbond/water in a syringe and did a Weldbond wash to prevent grout bleed under the translucent glasses. Once this had seeped under and dried, I was ready to grout!
Using Spectralock I pre-mixed grout following the instructions inside the bucket. It is LOVELY to not mix and wait for the grout to slake! The trickiest part was wiping off without wiping it off the background areas. Once the grout had cured, I was ready to paint using craft acrylic paints. This technique of using pre-mixed grout for the background and painting was inspired by the work of Laura McKellar. You can see her work on Instagram: / lauramckellarmosaics
I ended up painting the edges, and VOILA! a relatively quick, custom, glass mosaic project is finished! I think it would make a beautiful Mother's Day gift as well!

I love your teaching videos and your old-fashioned photo of your family. I think you look most like your uncle Bob.❤😊
Lol. I'm sure I have his German nose!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I have been looking for some guidance on this for a while and then I found you ❤
That’s so nice to know! Happy to help!
So thoughtful of you to create this for a Special Lady Aunt Dorothy - God Bless her and your whole family with Good Health 😍😍😍
Thank you so much!
Amazing technique to combine painting the grouted background. I'll check out Laura McKellar's work. Thank you for sharing. Beautiful project.
Thanks so much! It was a hit with my aunt!
Thanks for the links to Laura's websites. I think this may be a valuable technique for the pique assiette work I hope to start doing more of soon.@@mazzonimosaics8222
Thanku
You're welcome!
Please make more videos!! This is great
Thank you! 😊
The roses are lovely! What a wonderful gift!! Both for Aunt Dorothy ( HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉) and for all of us who love your channel as we were given an extra video! Woo hoo!!! Thank you😍
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Watching you work is so mesmerizing! Wow, I can’t believe that I recognized the artists names and techniques that you mentioned. Thank you for sharing your amazing videos.
Thank you so much!
🌺 is beautiful, you make it look so easy. I was surprised you could have such wide grout spaces, I thought it would fall out?❤️🌹
The Spectralock I premixed grout has something in it and it’s stuck on there.
Just beautiful! Really enjoyed watching!
Love the idea of painting the grout for the background, can you do that with any grout or just that special one? I really want to try it. Thanks so much for sharing!
I think a regular sanded grout would not stick and so wouldn't work. I did a little test piece with the Spectralock I grout before I used it on the bouquet.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 thank you!
That is just stunning. I love to paint so this technique is definitely going to be tried! TY for posting this! 👍😁
Painting is definitely faster than cut glass to fit. Plus the flexibility of mixing the colors gives you so much freedom!
Ok…Julie those roses are gorgeous,..wow! What a beautiful gift!
I think so too!
The rose bouquet is so so pretty-the painting technique turned out so perfect for the roses. A very nice commemorative piece🌹🌹.
Thank you! Cheers!
Loved getting this bonus!! In my next life I’ll be able to nip like you…I hope. Both you and your aunt are blessed to have one another. Happy birthday to her!
Aw! Thank you!
I love your just do it attitude! Thank you again for showing you can be a free form and somewhat unplanned artist. It's gorgeous. Happy Birthday Auntie!
You are so welcome!
I love your roses and I’m sure your aunt will too!
Thank you!
Thank you so much! You are so kind to share with us!❤️❤️❤️
You are welcome. Thanks for watching. 😊
Learning the hard way to do the glue wash around transparent glass. Messed up dragonfly wings with seeping grout. Thanks for the tip with the syringe.
You’re welcome!
Thank you for such a good tutorial. Learning from you a lot!💗💗💗
Glad it was helpful!
Magnificent. Thank you
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching!
I just found your channel a week ago and have binge watched through all the episodes. You do incredibly beautiful work!
Thank you 😊!
Beautiful work as always, I’m sure your Aunt will love the roses and thank you for sharing this technique I will definitely be trying this one!😁
You are so welcome! I hope you do try it!
Very interesting, thank you 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow. Lovely 🌹
Thank you!
Beautiful roses. How did you do your background? Love it
Thank you! I used grout and then painted it.
I love all your work, everything is always so beautiful. I was wondering when you paint the grout and it gets on the glass, does it come off the glass very easily? thank you
It comes off with no problem.
To be honest when you were grouting the background l had some doubt but the piece looks fabulous, love it. Great work as always. 😊
Thanks Peter! Once I had all the glass parts ready, this project came together so quickly! Now I want to make more of these with different flowers!
Love the bonus ... and a gorgeous end result. I’m sure it will be well received. When you have time, can you recap on the weldbond wash - is it 50/50 with water? I’ve tried this but not very successful, so any tips would be appreciated.
Yes, the Weldbond is diluted 50/50 with water. Using the syringe helped control where it went. I used a paper towel to dab some of the excess out. I didn’t have any grout bleed in the end!
Very brave cutting roses without a pattern. Watching intently!
Does the acrylic paint fade over time? That is absolutely beautiful!
Maybe. If it's in sunlight it might fade over time. I used craft quality acrylics. Professional quality paints would likely last longer.
She ( Sue Smith) doesn’t have roses 🥀 but you do!! Yay 🙏
I'm sure she's made roses at some point by now. Maybe just didn't film it. Same basic technique of simplifying, etc.
Probably a silly question…but when you use contact paper to maintain the shape of the rose, do you place glue on formed flower and then peel off once dried? This is so beautiful!!!
Good question. I ease the contact paper off slowly, making sure each piece is glued in place. I find it is easier to control the glue and keep things clean that way.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 thank you!!
Thank you! I didn’t hear what your substrate was for this. Could you tell me what 8x10 substrate is? Just beautiful and learned a lot.
Good question! I can’t remember if it is primed birch plywood or primed cradle board. One of those.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 Thanks for getting back to me so soon. It looked like an 8x10 canvas and you taped the sides. It appeared to be lightweight. I struggle with substrate material and may have to buy MDF sheet and cut it myself. I love your informative videos!
Definitely not canvas as it is not strong enough to support a mosaic. It might be the back of cradle board. Or solid birch plywood.
@@Bluffton3 Thanks so much. Some hardware stores will cut it for you.
Ma'am it's really very beautiful
Bt how can common people do it
In day to day uses how to cut a glass
Thank you! It takes practice.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 No, not that.
I meant, from where can I get that glass cutter .
Even if I would get it would not be much help for me, because I may not use it again. Also where will I search for stained glass.
I don't know where you live. Here in the U.S. there are glass suppliers that sell the tools as well. Like DelphiGlass.com and SWartglass.com
Julie how long was the paint sitting on the glass before you wiped it off? I want to try this but see I need a different grout first as well, ty in advance.
It was still wet when I wiped it off.
What is the white liquid you pour around the mosiac pieces? Thanks. Love your work.
Thanks so much! It is a 50/50 mix of Weldbond and water, called a Weldbond wash.
What glue would u suggest for doing a tree stump mosaic.
Could you please tell me what kind of substrate did you use?
This was an 8"x10" cradle board substrate I purchased from Hobby Lobby. It had a textured white finish on it.
Excellent teaching, would have been helpful to see more of your hands though, as there was a lot of wasted space above the rose
Or is it easier said than done
But thanks, have just subscribed

Ps, you inspired me today, incredible
Thanks for the feedback! It is difficult to cut over the work as the shards become problematic. Force of habit makes me move my hands off camera!
That's what I thought ,,, easy to sit this side of the camera,,, amazing talent, thanks for sharing
